A thank you to this awesome community!

First, I want to thank everybody who already played our game and commented. All the constructive feedback, ideas and appreciation are invaluable to us! You all rock :smile:!

A full game in the works!

Second, we decided to develop "The Last Guardian" into a full game. It will need a new name before it is done, as the current name is trademarked (who knew :wink: ?!). If you are interested, you can stay updated about our progress at itch.io https://limboofwonders.itch.io/the-last-guardian-full-game or on our newly-created twitter http://twitter.com/limboofwonders.

Play mine and I will play yours!

Thirdly, with only 5 days left on LD46, we want to focus on getting as much valuable community feedback as possible. It will help us in developing the game and finalizing our vision for it. So I will be focusing hard on playing/rating and leaving feedback for your games. If you play our game and share your opinion, I will definitely play and comment on yours! See you there :smile:

Titles You Should Play! #6 || LD46

This will probably be my last list of general recommendations for this Ludum Dare. I'm a bit disappointed in myself, as I was aiming to go for 46 highlighted games, but I guess 35 is a sensible compromise. Nonetheless, this was a great first experience!

Untitled Phoenix Game untitledphoenix.png Can't wait for October to come around and reignite the passion!

to Leave toleave.png While it's unfortunate we'll have to move on eventually, treasuring the moments is the least we can do.

The Planetarian planetarian.png Soon enough there'll be new worlds to explore...

MicroVore microvore.png ...new wonders taking your breath and enhancing your understanding of the world(s).

Mycelium mycelleum.png Until then, I'll watch patiently as ideas given to this fertile soil sprout into the beautiful, juicy fruits they were envioned as.

Thank you all so much for making my very spontaneous decision to participate in a game jam this wonderful, this unforgettable! I always had trouble finding my "crowd", but this, all about this, feels very much "just about right" to say the least :D

Please don't take offense if I didn't shoutout your game, there's simply not enough time to play every title, appreciate it to its maximum potential and present it in a digestible manner.

If you're interested in more great games I found, do take a look at my previous highlights

The Land I Live On | Relaxing 3rd Person Shooter

Hey guys, i want to share my game The Land I Live On (game page) with you all; It's a TPS game with 32-bits inspired graphics (low-poly + pixel-art). You play as an Onion Gardner watering plants and keeping the garden flowers alive (note: that this garden is on the back of a flying turtle because of game logics xD).

My teams always use the LD to experiment techs, visuals, concepts and other stuff that we are eager to know more about it. We would have liked to polish the gameplay more, but there would be less time to test and experiment with the art style.

There's an HTML5 build on our itch.io page (linked on our LD page). If you manage to play our game, leave a comment with a "@" at the end so i can know that you came from this post. I will definitely play your game too! :)

The art of Crab It Alive!

wallpaper.png

Today we'd like you to take a closer look at the art of our entry Crab It Alive!. Actually it was Nuria Pico on her own who did the 100% of the work! She's a graphic designer at Viravira Estudio.

We've released all these fantastic assets under CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 license, so feel free to use any of them in your projects: https://github.com/Minimuino/LD46

postmortem-03.jpg

Nuria chose a flat visual style and different color palettes for each part of the game: blue shades to create an underwater illusion, grey shades for the fishing boats and a wide range of colors for the living creatures of the sea. She wanted to present sea life as diverse and colorful as opposed to the grey and boring human machines. Also, we wanted to add more animation and movement to both characters and the environment but we ran out of time.

postmortem-01.jpg

Music and sound effects were made with very little knowledge on that subject: Nuria had never composed a song before, we used LMMS for the first time in our lives, and Audacity with little previous experience. Anyway, we're proud of the result, especially of the electricity sound: it's made of two recordings of Nuria making tssssssshhhhhhhhhtttststsssshhhhhh with her mouth :smile:

postmortem-02.jpg

The game programming part was made with Godot 3.2, a free (as in freedom) game engine that works like a charm and I encourage you all to try. It has many features that make development of 2D games easy and fun (can be used for 3D as well but I don't have experience with it). Below you can see a preview of the final result:

crab-it-alive.gif

That's all for now, if you like what you see go check out our game and share your thoughts with us!

I'm making our Ludum Dare project into a full commercial game ❤️

Before LD46, I told myself that if i was pleased with our game for this jam i would make it into a full commercial game. A week after the jam, i still liked this idea quite a lot, some people seemed to like the concept of the game and i had a LOT more content i wanted to add to the game. So i've decided to make Bonfire into a full commercial game.

So a couple of weeks back i started working on it, starting with what we cruelly missed during the game jam: the editor. And i though, why not put the level editor in the game so people can create their own puzzles and levels ? I always liked the idea of having a level editor in my games but never did it for diverse reasons, so this time i'm doing it from the start. The editor that will ship with the game will be the one i use to create my levels.

Currently, i'm taking the time to recreate what we had during the jam but with robust code and an architecture that will scale better for a long term project. My goal right is to re-implement the features present in the jam, alongside the level editor.

Once this is done (shouldn't take long), i'll prototype the new mechanics i have in mind to see what works and what doesn't. I'm also going though the feedbacks we collected during the jam, there are a lot of good ideas in here. I'll have to be careful about feature creep though, as i don't want this project to take too long.

I'm still unsure if i will do all the pixel-art myself like during the jam (i kinda hate my art) or if i will find an awesome artist to work with (paid work, of course). I do have my eyes on some great composers since audio really isn't my thing (as i'm sure you already know if you played our games, haha).

For this version of the game, a couple of things are different though: - I'm working alone this time (instead of a team of two during the jam). - I force myself to work less intense hours compared to the jam, because i want to survive this year... haha. - I might not open source the full codebase (i still want to open as much as possible though). I'm opened to feedbacks on this !

But a lot of things are the same: - I tweet progress on the game every day on Twitter. - I'll keep streaming on Twitch, i'll try at least once a week.

TL;DR: If you want to follow the development of the full game: see my twitter.

Keep playing, keep rating!

Unfortunately, the mobile port and post-jam version of Birdie Burglars is taking us a bit longer than expected to finish up. You can still play and rate the LD web version, though! Come on and slingshot those meowmies!

What are some other games you've been enjoying? I have surasshu's recommendations on twitter bookmarked to go through in the next 4 days -- looking forward to trying those all out!

Random Levels in It Hungers

I thought I'd take a few minutes to quickly describe how I created random levels in It Hungers. This last minute addition to the game was really something that made it a little bit more replayable for me, even though it's a very crude addition.

The Overall Plan

The plan basically consists of a grid of positions within an arena. I would then essentially shuffle a deck of tiles, rotate them, and place them into the arena. These vignettes are each responsible for populating themselves with the prefabs that inhabit them, like enemies or pickup items.

The Grid

It's not much to look at, but the grid is basically several game objects out in the world. grid.png

Pretty uninspiring, right? That's where my VignetteManager comes to the rescue!

The Vignette Manager

The vignette manager's job is to know where all of the game positions are for these tiles. Generates a random "deck" of tiles, shuffles it, and rotates each tile as it places it down into the game. Each tile then populates itself, or in the case of "special" tiles like the player spawn or the larva spawn, it handles them accordingly. This is a little bit clunky, but the shuffling function basically randomly selects an item in a List (array) of available locations. It "draws" that tile from the stack, and places it into a "shuffled" stack. Basically, all it's doing is rearranging the order of the tiles.

``` Transform randomListVignetteTransform() { Transform selectedVignetteTransform;
    int index = Random.Range((int)0,(int)shufflingVignettes.Count); //picks a random array index
    selectedVignetteTransform = shufflingVignettes[index];
    shufflingVignettes.RemoveAt(index); // removes that index from the unshuffled version of the list
    shuffledVignettes.Add(selectedVignetteTransform); // adds it to the shuffled version
    return selectedVignetteTransform; // and returns the transform of the empty placeholder game object in the list
}
```

Then, we randomly rotate in a similar way, and put a random vignette prefab in that location.

``` float randomPrefabRotation() { float randomRot; int randIndex = Random.Range((int)0, rotations.Length); randomRot = rotations[randIndex];
    return randomRot;
}
GameObject randomPrefab()
{
    GameObject randomGO;
    int randIndex = Random.Range((int)0, vignettes.Length);
    randomGO = vignettes[randIndex];
    return randomGO;
}
```

You may have noticed by now, that each of these bits are really doing the same thing: grabbing random items from a list. These random things are basically random obstacles or meshes, that have not been populated yet with any denizens or items in the game.

Filling out the Vignette

The last little bit was putting something in each of these vignette tiles. Basically, I really did the same thing. A random list of "things" in an empty game object. The Start method randomly instantiates an item from that list, and the placeholder game object deletes itself.

``` public class RandomSpawnControl : MonoBehaviour { public GameObject[] enemySpawnerGO; public GameObject mapGOParent; public GameObject spawnParentGO;
// Start is called before the first frame update
void Start()
{
    spawnParentGO = GameObject.FindWithTag("MapGOTagger");
    GameObject goInstantiated;
    GameObject objToSpawn = enemySpawnerGO[Random.Range((int)0, enemySpawnerGO.Length)];
    goInstantiated = Instantiate(objToSpawn, this.transform.position, this.transform.rotation);
    goInstantiated.transform.SetParent(spawnParentGO.transform);
    Destroy(this.gameObject);
}
} ``` These enemySpawnerGO game objects are enemies, items, and spawners. randSpawn.png You can see that I've cheated a little bit, and seeded these elements to favor some things more than others. Once this has all been instantiated, you've got yourself a level!
LD46LDImage.png
Thinking like a Boardgame
I sort of knew what I was getting into with random levels. I've looked at it so many different ways, and ran out of time trying to do it in a previous Ludum Dare. This time, the Ah Ha moment was thinking like it was a board game. These weren't "random levels" they were tiles or cards being drawn from a deck. Pick a random place, draw a random card, place it, and remove the possibility of "drawing" that same location again. I know it's a mess and could use more work. But look at it! It was a 30 minute effort and really made it feel like there is more game there.
The full code can be found buried here: https://github.com/ArkInRev/LD46
Theres still a few days left to play/vote/give feedback for my game Commodore Commander too. Super glad to see so much feedback already :) But at the same time Ive seen only 1 person get to the end screen - during a live stream which was very amusing. Is anyone up for the challenge?
Game page: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/commodore-commander
Attack07_3.gif
Theres also a version on my itch.io account now: https://alex-adedge.itch.io/commodore-commander-ld46
The game is available in Windows, Linux and HTML5 (in-browser) Im not sure if the Linux version even works, if someone is able to test it, thatd be great.
Today I also put together a quick look at the before/after of my game too, with comparisons of the early 2 hours prototype mockup scene and game UI and then the final game after 72 hours of work:
LD_Compare2.png
Quite the difference. I really like how the UI evolved through development, just as the game concept evolved, eventually becomming nicely polished. Theres some pretty strong elements still present from the first iteration as well! Its also interesting to see how much the graphics changed, from a prototype simple environment to a proper cyberpunk themed game. Likewise that initial cube in the prototype scene, I originally had no idea what it represented other than some kind of trap/obstacle element in the game - and eventually it became a main obstacle in the game.
Almost time for final results, best of luck to everyone, it will be interesting to see what games come out on top :slight_smile:
Behind The Scenes
I thought I'd provide a little "documentary" of the development of I I R O.
This account focuses more on the artistic side of the project and some background.
I've always participated by myself in the COMPO before, but this time was my first team-effort.
Our creative process was quite interesting you could say.
0.jpg
This is my team-mate @ankea and me in the studio we set up in my living room.
We kinda insisted early on that we're going to do this project IRL, so setting up a studio was a necessity.
1.jpg
And so we did! @ankea managed to cram all his gear into a "portable unit" and travel to my place for three days. I call that a major feat in itself.
Even though modern technology makes remote-working amazingly easy and efficient, being physically in the same place still has its benefits.
Some of the things we produced would have been quite difficult to accomplish remotely.
5.jpg
4.jpg
One such example is the intro-segment of the game.
I've utilized stop-motion photography in my previous entries too, but this time I could include an on-screen "actor" since there was two of us. This would surely be possible by yourself using a stand and a timer, but it would obviously be less efficient.
At first my intention was to shoot the stop motion-intro/epilogue in the beginning, but it ended up to be one of the last things we did. Our scheduling was admittedly a bit poor during the final day, so it's one of the reasons we didn't finish in time, and had to scrap some content. The intro-segment also ended up being somewhat clunky and visually incomplete due to this.
Whiteboard2.png
This is a whiteboard we used for brainstorming ideas and taking notes. It proved quite efficient especially later on.
(The board was scribbled full and wiped clean at least three times in the span of the project).
Highly recommendable for projects like this!
One thing I like to bring up is the background of the mask featured prominently in the game.
Pahka_LOW.gif
It's a real physical mask sculpted by @ankea, originally to be used as a prop in a student-film our friend was working on, where I also featured as an actor. That particular project apparently ended up being scrapped due to poorly shot material.
Sometime later, we cooked up an idea to shoot an amateur-film ourselves in a span of a weekend, and use the mask as a central element. There were only three of us, and we planned & shot the thing in only two days (not much unlike Ludum Dare!)
This was almost 9 years ago.
Movie.png
It was also somewhat of a horroresqué story, involving an abusive father, a misfigured son and a priest.
The film has never been published, and could probably use a re-edit, but we had fun working on it way back then.
Also, some of the material we shot is really amazing. There was a plan to recycle some of it in the game to a larger degree, but the only things we ended up using were few clips in the Level-HUB.
Poster2.JPEG
This is a mock-up poster I made of the short-film few years ago when revisiting it.
As you can see, the game shares (partly) the same name.
Recently I've come to like the idea of re-using old material in new ways. I have so much creative output and drafts that have never been properly used lying around. The more time passes, breathing new life to them seems almost like an obligation.
And speaking of that, here's a fun detail in our entry.
output 2.gif
It features a weird mini-game involving an egg. That you must rub.
Yes, you heard right.
Pretty strange already as is.
output2.gif
But I think most might find it surprising that we actually used an old photo of someone we know as an asset.
head.jpg
More particularly his head. Talk about hiding an easter-egg in your game. (Ha!)
He wasn't feeling all that well at the time, so that's the reason for the eccentric posture.
But there you have it.
I guess the underlying point of my story here is that you can find new value in your old creations after they've been kept in the dark for long enough.
Updated my game: Guns N' Violets! Added new weapons!
I started the game jame with the though that out of 10,000 participants, my game's rank is going to come 10,001 and it turned out to be just the exact opposite of it!
Again I am thanking Ludum Dare and @pov for arranging such a nice event in these depressing times.
If you haven't played Earth 2.0 till now play it now!
In each level, you will have to find the 5 matching platforms and activate them.Then you will be able to gather what you need to get to the next day.
Last days effort + Rate exchange
  • 'Been spending the whole proportion of my free time to try out random games out there. Still there are many remaining ones that I was not aware of. 4 days remaining, for the last ditch, I will try out the games you commented (if I haven't already). Please play and leave us a feedback here, we want as many contributions from you as possible since our game is still under huge development process.
Here is the link to our game: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/keep-what-alive
LD46_2.png - Keep What Alive - you have 5 days to survive, take care of your family or leave them rot to death, ask politely for food from your neighbor or just steal from them (without being shot), walk down a disease-stricken street and avoid those suspicious coughing lunatics... Or kill them with your hard-earned weapon. Regardless, who you choose to keep alive will lead to a different ending. - You will experience some ambiguity playing our game at first, but still we want you to feel like you can do anything in that world we created. Thanks to those who have commented and let us know that there are still a lot of room for improvement. For others who haven't tried it out,, now is your best chance. Also give us the link to your game also!
Games of Life
Several people had the idea of making something based on Conway's game of life and I thought I'd briefly go through them. The Game of Life is a cellular automaton with very simple rules from which great complexity can arise. It was first studied by John Conway, a great mathematician who recently died of COVID-19. It was the least of his achievements.
Everybody took the idea in a different direction, making me think about the game of life in ways I hadn't before and my descriptions don't do them justice. I recommend trying out all of them.
https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/conways-garden-of-life/ by @davidsheadgames asks you to plant and harvest fruit which will spread according to the rules of the Game of Life.
https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/golkia/ by @szieberth-adam is a sandbox, implementing the vanilla game of life with no set objective. Uses GPU to run the simulation - very cool.
https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/life-1/ by @pke1029 is a retro-style (TIC-80) game. It has a sandbox mode as well as a mode where you navigate the grid and shoot at an evolving pattern to remove cells and stop it reaching you.
https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/game-of-life/ by @teo-miklethun is a very challenging puzzle game where you have to add/remove a minimal number of cells to reach a desired pattern.
https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/life/ by @esenti feels like Space Invaders. Both the incoming bullets and the ones you fire are spaceships, patterns that move themselves across the grid.
https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/life-42-cells by @kara challenges you to reach a state where 42 cells are enclosed in a very fast simulation.
https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/life-alive by @claytonrumley is a multiplayer game where each player is a single cell that must move around and stay alive while the rest of the board follows the usual rules.
https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/imojc/ by me is also multiplayer - live cells are coloured and the challenge is to survive by encouraging cells of your colour to spread across the grid while competing for space with other players.
If you know of any that I've missed, please tell me.
Thank You To All...
Thank You So Much....:black_heart:....
I am very very thankful to everyone who played my game reviewed it and also to those who posted incredibl games, and gave me feedback and suggestions. Your feedback made feel so much confident about my skills and also supported me to continue game development.
Today I Crossed :100: Ratings received.
Thank You So much. It is a big milestone for me as this was my first time making a finished game. and publishing it. I was not having any idea how people will react on my game whether they will like it or not. but you all are awesome and very creative people. I love playing your game. I learned a lot from this jam. Once again Thank You very very much.
Love you All...:blackheart::blackheart::black_heart:...
Hello there! I am 11 and this was my first Ludum Dare. It was super AWSOME! Anyways, this Ludum Dare is about to end sadly. But I need more feedback so I can improve on my games. Please give my game a review and a comment at https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/the-last-flower. Thank you so much for all your support! Also, many people ask if I am actually 11 and yes I am! Good Luck Everyone! Also I am trying to get a 💯 reviews. Please help me reach that goal by sending my game link to your friends on Ludum dare. Thank you sooo much for your support! 😀😃😄😁
Only 4 days left to play On Air!
Janitor_Animation.gif You * might * not be able to ever play the true On Air again if you don't hurry. I've heard Beebo Studios want to put it down and replace it for an "updated" version with a lot of new "feautures"... Stupid additions like "a real tutorial"... Do they think we are to dumb to play? Better hurry to catch the real experience!
This might be your last chance!
Streaming your games pt. 3!
In just a few minutes, I'll be going live on Twitch playing more of the Ludum Dare entries that folks have requested me to play! If you'd like me to play yours, feel free to drop a link in the chat.
behind the scenes I - animation (repost)
Hello everyone~
For the first time I animated sea creatures for our game 'Perish alive' and actually had so much fun with it that I spend too much time trying to make a smooth movement.. As a result, we didn't manage to add anymore enemies.. haha (sorry, team :sweat_smile:)
jellyfish-GIF.gif
Nonetheless, I decided to share the 'attack animation cycle' of the jellyfish which consists of 12 frames, all handrawn..(<--- totally over scoped) :smile: Each frame is consistent to the one before and after it thus creating a 'flow' which is what makes it look smooth and not jittery.
Have you checked Perish alive?
  • total balancing overhaul, with new game rules
  • added new ressource: nutrients
  • added ressource icons and UI ressource overview
  • hopefully better performance, but still working on it ;)
leefs_fallin.gif It is getting closer to what I imagined, but it is still an experiment ;)
Rescue Rangers new style!
Remember Ludum Dare Rescue Rangers? I'm trying to bring it back!
Getting over 20 comments has been tough this time round, due to the need to have the game developers "like" your comments to get ranking score. The basic idea is good: have people try and write meaningful comments, instead of spending 30 seconds on a game and keying in some ratings. In practice, however, there are some problems.
First of all, the developers of the game have to like your comments. This is not going to work if the developers are out on vacation because they finished the rating process already. Since we're near the end of the rating period, a lot of developers are not checking their comments every day!
Please note: Occasionally, others will also like your comments. However, there is a quirk in the scoring calculation that will penalize the game that is rated when there are third party likes. A like on a comment is counted much like a comment, which means the game's score will go down dramatically if you like a bunch of its comments. Check the Github issue here. So please don't do it!
So, how do we find those games with active developers? The answer is, use my new search engine! You get a list of only the "active" games, sorted by score. Additionally you can also search by platform or keyword.
The search engine scrapes the data every hour. However, scraping comments takes 40 minutes, so to offload the system a bit, it scrapes only 1/4 of the games at a time, so refresh time for comments is 4 hours.
Cthulhu : The Cult Must Not Die - Battle Theme explained.
Hey good Ludum Dare people! I composed the music and created the SFX for the game "Cthulhu : The Cult Must Not Die". ( https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/cthulhu-the-cult-must-survive )
I decided to create a video where I show my creative process and how I composed the battle theme you can hear when you're summoning the Great Old One.
I hope you'll enjoy the video.
I barely finished the game for the jam, and I wanted to finish, I really wanted. So after a week I started seeing people uploading their projects. Oh boy I was happy to see that, and started fixing/finishing my game, and I happily did :smile:
Now to be really 100% happy with this, I want you to try it! I didn't uploaded a web version for this one, It wouldn't work properly, but it's a small download that would make me "big" happy!
Warning: WHEN RATING, REFER TO THE "THE LAZY KING" VERSION.
The game is essentially the same, but I almost didn't finish the first one, so there's a huge difference.
I tried by best here, hoping I would gave you guys some fun happy few minutes!
The more I rate games, the less I give stars :/
I see people having rated hundreds of games... I don't understand how they do it!
I have tried +/- 40 games since the beginning of the rating phase and my brain is already melting! Worse than that, I found myself giving less stars as times goes on... I'm not sure my judgment is getting better.
How many games have you rated? Do you feel like your ratings are getting more generous or more harsh?
Only a few days left to play and rate games!
If you're interested, check out our game about keeping the family business alive.
Only 4 days left!
There's only 4 days left to rate games, and if you haven't played my compo entry, "Defend the Loot!" why not give it a try? The objective of the game is to defend the loot chest as waves of enemies attack you. Before each wave you get a minute to build up your base.
For weeks I've been working hard on a post-jam update and I'm finally "done!" I managed to squeeze in LOTS of new features for this version and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.
It's a timing-based clicker game where you destroy tiles to build up your streak multiplier and earn more and more points. There's a nice ambient soundtrack and a built-in online leaderboard.
Post-jam Version
heartache_postjam.png
I decided to make a post-jam version of my game because I wasn't able to get a lot of my core ideas implemented in time for submission.
This is the same gameplay at heart, but with several tweaks and additions:
  • Highscore!
  • New "mitosis" currency that is used to buy cells.
  • Much better pathfinding and AI target selection.
  • Much cleaner difficulty curve with threat level display.
  • Many other minor balance changes and bug fixes.
The post-jam version is accessible on the same page as the jam version. There is now a menu on page load to select which version you want to play.
One Alive At A Time
alive3.PNG First time making a game && joining a game jam. :smiley: So the idea is: The room is on fire ! However, the house owner went to work… :scream: Objects in the room have to count on themselves to escape. Only ONE object can be alive at a time. But it can pass “life” to others when touching them. How many can survive ? That’s up to you. You start……with a banana.
