Making graphics for the Game Boy

Logopost.jpg

This Ludum Dare I worked on Scrambl’d, a fast-paced, puzzle-platformer for the Nintendo Game Boy. It is an actual Game Boy game, meaning it works on any hardware that plays ordinary Game Boy cartridges. I have played it on my original Game Boy, the Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Light, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Micro (through an emulator) and the Super Game Boy. It works on all of them flawlessly, but it does not look the same on either. This was something I had keep in mind while creating graphics and designing levels, and I figured I could share some of my insights with you since the topic of creating games for old handhelds seems to intrigue many (judging by the wonderful feedback we’ve received so far!)

First things first, the original Game Boy sports a 160x144 pixel screen and can display only four colours: white, light grey, dark grey, and black (or four shades of green if you will). If these two things were the only limitations, I would consider making graphics for a Game Boy game a quick, easy, and enjoyable task. But as you may already suspect there is more to it than that. But let us leave the techy stuff out for now and focus on those four shades of grey and the tiny resolution.

The first and most obvious thing you need to consider when making graphics for the Game Boy is visibility. The four colours and low-res is already a bit complicated to get around as is, but when designing with actual hardware in mind, you need to remember that the screen of the original Game Boy was very small, and it wasn’t backlit. As such, it is hard to see anything on unless light conditions were optimal and even then, you will struggle to see anything if the graphics is not tailored to help you. Long story short, you have to put more mind into making things visible and clear when working on an actual Game Boy game than if you’re working on a game with similar resolutions and palettes supposed to show on a modern type of monitor.

ScrambldDMG.png

I focused on contrasts for this project, making sure that all interactable but stationary objects had a relatively even colouring, while the player character and interactable objects were outlined in black and with bright highlights. Stuff in the background was set to blend in even more as to not confuse the player. But things doesn’t end just there. Depending on what hardware or software is used to play a Game Boy game the visuals may vary a whole lot.

ProbotectorGBC.png

One thing we had to avoid was mixing tile and obj graphics in certain manners. See, tiles can use all four colours while the obj graphics trade one of the four for transparency and can be drawn on top of tiles. The ability to overlay tiles with obj to create more dynamic and varying visuals is tempting, and for the original Game Boy this would always render the result we wanted. But if the game was played on a Game Boy Color it would sometimes spell disaster due to the fact that obj and tile graphics are then rendered in different palettes! This is why the player, NPCs and items are different colours than the surroundings in Pokémon for example, and in the case of Probotector 2 it suddenly changes part of one character into another color, yuck! (I love Probotector, don't get me wrong.)

ScrambldGBC.png

In the end, we did use this to our advantage however, making sure that anything animated or moving was obj and that everything stationary was made from tiles. This way, the effect of the contrast was enhanced further on some platforms, making Scrambl’d more clear and visible than before.

Hope you had a good read :) Now, go play Scrambl’d!

The Last Stand

LD46's rating period is almost over, so now seems like a great (and late) time to finally post about my game! The Last Stand is where you play as a gunman trying to defend scientists as they look for a cure to the Boronavirus! I'd appreciate it if you could play it and leave a rating; I still need a handful more to get to 20! Thank you!

Happy Mother's Day! We really could use some comments today.

Happy Mother's Day to all you mothers and children of mothers out there! We know you are probably busy pampering your moms (or being the one that's pampered) but if you still have time today you could check out our game: Abyssal Accessory. We really could use some more comments and would like to check out your game as well if you happen to also need a few comments. So why not stop by and give it a try?

Anmerkung dggd-05-10 150540.png

We have a disproportionately high amount of mothers in our game, in case that's a selling criteria for a game on mothers day. In our visual novel met Tamagotchi sim you don't just interact with a mom, you also are mothering an adorable squid.

Hello everyone~

On earlier posts I shared some thoughts about the animations' process.

Today, I am showing you some early concept art of Perish alive.

Can I get Hundred Ratings!

Hello, this was my first Ludum dare!!! It was so fun and AWSOME. All the games published were super awesome!😛Wish I get to play them all! Sadly LD46 is about to end😢. I am 11 and was super excited about this. Hopefully I can get more feedback. Play my game and give feedback at https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/the-last-flower. Your feedback will come in use in improving the game and my coding skills!!! Also, I am making a full version of this game with all your feedback in mind. Thank you so much for your support !!😜😁😄 I am trying to get 💯 ratings on my game. Help me achieve my goal by sharing this game and by leaving a review/rating. One again thank you so much for your support! 😑😃🙂

Please stop making "full versions" of your games

BEFORE YOU COMMENT please read my response to the previous comments in which I explain my point of view, why I made this post, why I think it matters and stuff a bit better (oh, and why I know the title sucks)

Original post:

It's just my opinion but I find it very annoying how so many poeple make "full versions" of their games after LD has ended.

I get that you feel like it's missing a more polished UI, or maybe it's too short or something, but if you want to publish that please do it either after LD ratings are over (with a clear LD version and finished version), somewhere else (not on your LD page while people can still rate) or just don't!

That's the point of ludum dare, make the best game you can in 2-3 days, if you start making other versions I don't think that's very fair and shouldn't be added before rating time is over (if it should be added at all) as it is NOT A LD GAME

What a great first jam!

I can't believe I've not done this before! I've had an amazing time both building the game and being a part of the community, giving feedback and receiving it - so thanks to everyone  I wish I could carry on rating games, but the time is almost up!

See how a team of web developers (2 devs and 2 PMs as it turned out) attempt to turn their skills to gaming for the first time in "Snowball's Day In". Let us know what you think.

Snowball may seem like a simple cat, but there is a lot going on inside… how long can you keep her safe for?!

Thanks all and enjoy the rest of your jam!

Don't rate games without playing them.

How many times do I have to say this? Don't rate games without playing them, just don't. :face_palm:

No, we don't want your ratings if you haven't experienced the game.

As this rating period is coming to an end, I'm seeing many more ratings in my game, but am not seeing these people in my game's leaderboard. even if you score 0, you'll be on the leaderboard, so I know if you haven't played the game.

So, please don't rate games without playing them. If you're one of these people, please remove your rating from my game, I don't want it.

Sorry for the rant everyone, have a nice day.

I LIKE LUDUM DARE :)

Thanks to whom ever made this website, cheers i no there are alot of game jams, but still... I had a lot of fun. my first jam game:

Looking for some good games to try before the end of the rating period?

Here's some of my favorite games I played during this Ludum Dare! Go give them a shot!

The Adventures of Eggbert by @battlecat

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/the-adventures-of-eggbert

This game takes the idea of Keep it Alive and turns it into a lovely arcade game reminiscent of the 80s classics. It's really fun and charming.

Soul Seed by @unept

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/soul-seed

Soul Seed is a nice little interconnected world to explore, and you have to occasionally choose between bringing the tree water to extend your playtime, or bringing the tree food to extend your available areas. It's a good little dynamic that never gets too stressful but adds an element of danger to your actions.

You're Invited by @vincerubinetti and @ellian

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/youre-invited

This one is a criminally underplayed entry where you have to keep a party alive by refilling chip bowls, changing the music, and keeping up with the incoming guests. The pixel art is really fantastic.

Hope you try some of these games out and enjoy them!

Long Long Long Post Mortem : Keep the Bee (Jeez) Alive

LudumDare 46 - a post mortem

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/keep-the-bee-jeez-alive

This game was my come back to ludum dare after a long break ( last time succesful compo was LD32). I went a completely different route from usual (from scratch html/javascript game) to using Unity3d and blender to produce models. Before the long ~in details~ rambling about the tools and choices I made for this game, lets recap the highs and lows of this edition :

inB4 TL;DR

  • Unity3d is a great tool to quickly produce a game, the mix UI/editor and code is very nice. The general UI of unity is somewhat lacking ( keyboard shortcuts ( why can't a delete stuff without right clicking ), the shadergraph ui is clunky )
  • I love that I was easy to have a physique systems, particles, shaders, sound and music without to much trouble.
  • I did the game across the weekend, with time for the family. I mostly worked early in the morning during baby's nap and until late at night. The last push was a blast.
  • I spent way too long on small details and as always not enough on having a game. It lacks clear objectives or a compeling reward systems.
  • The game idea come from :
    • One of my first blender render, is an animation of a cactus characters in a desert.
    • Keep it Alive, had me thinking about staying alive, the bee gees about bees and voila. The set is model to look like the set of the music video from the beegees.
  • I hate the HoweverYouNameItCase where Methods/Properties start with a Capital letter! Using Atom without a good autocompletion/autofixing feature hinder me a lot.
  • Compiling the web version took a lot of time, and resulted in botched shadows :(

I made a Post Mortem Version of the game : https://github.com/dhmmasson/ld46/tree/master/keepTheBeeAlive-PostMortem Original game : https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/keep-the-bee-jeez-alive

Unity

About the tool

I learned about Unity watching a Quill18 LudumDare livestream a long time ago. I was puzzled by how he just seemed to create a bunch of unrelated scripts. Sebastien Lague youtube series on procedural game generation on unity hooked me. à I loved how you could program the editor as well as the game. His videos taught me a lot on how to organize my code using scriptable object to store some game logic :

  • the "levels" are a collection of building blocks that drop from certain points. I had plan on having a succession of levels, where you had less and less blocks or smaller or harder block to place. You would start with the large stones, and planks and end up with the brick and branches In the end there is only one playable level with a collections of all the available blocks ( to show off the assets I had designed ).

  • the weather scenarios : are a collections of particles effects + post processing. Same idea than before. I planned to start with a succession of sun/rain where you would have a minute of sunshine to prepare ( one of the not selected theme ) before the rain. Harder level would have different weather effects ( thunder, hail ). I only manage one, I had fun playing with the particle effects and the collision with the cactus to actually simulate them being water by the rain. The splashing effect is lost on the resolution I think.

Game mechanics :

the flower and the bees :

the bees are particles, At some point late in the development ( maybe on sunday, I should check the git log ) I had to add the bees ( they were in the title ) I didn,t had the time to program any kind of flight management ( nor the energy or a clue on how to do something believable) I had just finish messing about with the rain, so handling them as particles was kind of obvious. There are three kind of bees :

  • the ambient bees small that just buzz around the bee hive so it look more like a bee hive.

  • The angry bees that emit a bzzzz and buzz widly around the bee hive.

  • the wandering bees few and large, they circle around the main area ( with some speed over time in the particle management ). The cactuses have an attractor to help them "find" the flowers. On hitting a cactuses the score some points depending on the flower levels of the cactus. In the post mortem version I added some nice trail :)

the cactus :

the cactus are Plants, meaning they have water level associated with a number of flowers and a mesh. This allowed me to quickly manage the growing state. I just did multiple meshes in blender and link them to the same gameObject in unity. No need to fuss around where the flower should attach to the mesh and so on. I had plan on multiple cactus variants and other kind of flower with different water requirement ( the cactus in my original idea, needing no water and withering under the rain ) and the flower doing the contrary. In the LD version I have only one cactus with three states dry - flowering - too wet. In the post mortem version the cactus have more flowering states so that you see them growing. I should have added some instructions and some UI help to see more clearly the water requirement and actual level if I ever wanted to implement a better/richier version of this idea.

Moving the blocks :

that was the fun part. From the beginning I wanted you to build a shelter from random junk as the set of the music video for staying alive is some sort of abandoned ruin of a village. Doors and windows are in shambles and that gave me the idea.

Moving the pieces around in a direct way in 3d is tricky, I struggle to design in 3d in blender and in unity, both of them have different camera management and keyboard shortcut and this is a pain in the... In both software this is my biggest struggle. Being able to orbit around the correct point is something I experienced in my human computer interaction research lab years ago through the work a a phd student. Ever since I feel like a piece of me is missing... anyway I wasn't going to invent something brilliant in a matter of 2 days. I sketched something I must have done in previous projects, using a spring joint to loosely connect object to the mouse.

The elasticity of the spring allows in some sense to compensate for the fact that the user is not part of the physical engine. Finding the right strength for the spring is the key. I opted for something quite hard and with a lot of damping so that the object don't wiggle to much around. I also used quite heavy objects to stabilize everything.

To project where the user was pointing on the screen to a 3d position I used the native raycasting implementation. I opted for a two step process, if no object was selected the ray casting would intersect with the objects, left click sets the first anchor point. I like that the moving object anchor is set where you click on the object, rather than the center of mass. To highlight that a small sphere is visible on the object when you hover over it. ( The idea come from blender sculpt mode ). Once selected the object glow orange and the ray now intersect with a target plane.

The sphere, and the selected object are highlighted through the emission attribute from the shader. I discovered the emission parameter in some blender videos recently : I love the effect a bit to much. I am glad it worked well in the final version.

More Interaction ideas :

  • Target plane motion : moving the plane from front to back was plan but not implemented for LD ( it was heavily commented on ). I implemented that in the postmortem version
  • Push mode : At first the target sphere had a collider and you could also push object around with it. I disabled it to finalize my spring action.
  • Ghost mode : the object is transparent to collision with the other will pressing ctrl and moving

PostProcessing :

It was there in the template project, I just built upon to have 3 ambiances, one for the rain ( the one I used from the beginning ) a sunny, more yellow, less grain version, and a splash ( blurry ) version.

Shadergraph :

I started unity this year to implement some shaders I made on shadertoy for a research project. So I knew the HGSL and I can spend HOURS playing in shaders... not good for a compo. On the other hand I love graph programming ( grasshopper for Rhino is amazing for procedural 3d design ) and the shading graph in blender is very well made. It was a first for me to use Unity shader graph. I had seen some promising video online ( some force field, and a waterfall ). But man is the editor a pain in the butt... Moving around is a pain, Disconnecting a socket is a pain, adding a node is a pain. Why does unity hate keyboard shortcut (delete ??). It slow, clunky, berk! but you can plug and play some nice stuff. In the LD I finally didn't do much. I used Imphenzia texture mapping technique in blender and in unity. - I did something super cool but invisible : the wing of the bee bat through the shader. I mapped the x coordinate of the texture to a sinusoidal vertex displacement. In blender most of the bee vertex are mapped to some (0, Vc ) coordinate ( where Vc is the position of the color in the texture ). The wing vertex are map ( u, Vc ) where u is propotional to the position on the wing ( 0 close to the body, 1 at the tip ). Meaning that the vertex move more at the tip.

What I wanted more :

  • there is a lot of brutal change of values. I'd love to have a easy to use continuous change of properties. gameObject.position.transition( vector3(0,0,0), 0.1f ) ;
  • I made a lot of "state machine" : for the targetSphere, for the flowers, for the weather... I wish I had something more generic : Maybe something like the Animator in unity ?

Big mistake : I had a memory leak in the cactus mesh update, where I was instantiating the mesh again and again. Not such a big deal in the LD version as there was only two variants. In the post mortem version, I added 3 new flowering states, and the ability for the cactus to dry. It got pretty bad pretty quickly.

3D models - Blender

In the past I have used sketchup, fusion360 and Rhino + grasshopper to do 3d modeling. I very recently learn to use blender. Imphenzia on youtube made it sound so simple to quickly model low poly models that I wanted to try for myself. The four softwares have a completely different take on how 3d modeling is done but this post mortem is already long enough so I won't expand there too much. For some repetitive task like the stone around the door I would have done a better job on fusion or grasshopper. However Imphenzia UV mapping technique (mentioned in the Shadergraph section) allowed me to quickly color and texture the elements. It is very limited in what you can do, so no tweaking make for a speedy process. Blender on the mac tend to crash every so often, not on this weekend. Pray the software gods!

Sounds and music

I composed the music on sunday, 6 hours before the deadline, having done most of the programming ( well it was not a game, but you could move stuff around and bees, and rain ). It was done online on a web app called Noteflight. I have composed on and off on it for some time now. The music was heavily inspired by staying alive ( I started with the chords and some of the notes from parts harvested from google ). Then I just copy paste and tried some contrapunctal stuff... Anyway I badly copied the theme at some point... I can't even hear it. In the end I slapped some trumpet, it always adds something that I like. I am quite proud of the music.

The sounds where created even latter, with even more stress about the remaining time. As it was super late, baby was sleeping; No noise allowed so I reverted to use Bfxr. I used it a long time ago, with no real or current experience of it creating realistic bump noise was a nightmare. Implementing the sound was terrible too. I wanted to cycle around some bump noises to avoid repetitiveness. In the end for the LD the blocks reference the same 4 audiosource, and stimulates some of them on collision. This result in a mess on init, and

Atom

I love atom to the bits, but as a complete unity noob it was lacking a bit in term of exploring the api. I used a package autocomplete-unity that helped a lot. I am considering installing visual studio to ease the development of future unity projects and games.

My favorite submissions

With the end of the rating period coming up, I just wanted to share a few of my favorite games that I've played so far for this event's Jam and Compo. I was a bit disappointed that I couldn't find any traditional action packed games that I really fell in love with for this jam, but still very impressed with these three entries.

I also want to say that I am over all very impressed with almost all of the other games I played and rated, but I just wanted to share these ones because I really feel that they stood out and were absolutely exceptional.

#1: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/adrena-line

AdrenaLine.png
This one is my absolute favorite. It's the perfect submission in my opinion (aside from not really meeting the theme requirement at all). You can pick it up immediately, and it never seems to get boring! The amount of polish in this game also blows my mind. It looks like something I'd find in the app store, already published. That being said, I think that if the developer ends up porting it to mobile, it could be a massive opportunity if they play the marketing right. Either way, definitely worth a shot, you should go check it out if you haven't yet! My high score is 20, see if you can beat me :)

#2: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/jarheads

JarHeads.png
This developer, I just discovered over the course of this event. I still hold the 2nd highest score on the scoreboard (right below the developer themself) with a high score of 870480, so go see if you can knock me down a notch. Even if you don't enjoy the gameplay, playing this game just to hear the amazing music is worth it, I'm listening to it on loop currently as I write this post just because its so good. After playing this game I was impressed enough to go back and look at all their previous submissions, a lot of which were just as impressive in my opinion as this one. I also feel like this developer deserves an honorable mention because they're a very active LD community member who plays and rates other games as opposed to the other two developers in this list who haven't.

#3: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/battery-panic

This one's a classic HacksawUnit puzzle game :) the dude always creates high quality content, what else can I say? Polished visuals, fun music, interesting gameplay, and well balanced enough to keep me entertained for a good amount of playthroughs. Would definitely recommend giving it a go!

Last chance for me to play your games on stream!

(Apologies if this is a double post; the site is giving me some weird errors.)

In just a few minutes, I'll be going live on Twitch playing more of the Ludum Dare entries that folks have requested me to play! If you'd like me to play yours, feel free to drop a link in the chat.

The amount of games titled "Keep It Alive"

When I was browsing the games I came across several games with a title "Keep It Alive" so I got curious, how many are there in total? Make a guess: How many games submitted for this Ludum Dare is titled "Keep It Alive"?

Just try to make a guess!

...

...

...

 Answer below!

There is 70 games with that name.

...

...

I found this out by looking at the url for the games. If there is two entries with a exact same name, site adds "-number" to the end of the url. I just put in a different number on the url and 69 was last. And "zero" is one so it equals 70. There can be more with a slight variation, but I only count the ones with exactly same name.

I don't know, I just found this to be an interesting tidbit! :D

Trending Beasts evolved!

TrendingBeastsAJ1.png

After all your support at the game entry, I decided to continue the implementation of this game after the game jam. As a result of this, a new version of the game has been released with some features and characters that weren't on time for the jam delivery.

It can be played on the browser, so there's no downloadable version for now.

PLease, give a try to both version if you wish and compare the evolution of the game. Again, I thank you all your comments and support.

Are our dreams still alive?

Hey there fellow developers, just wanted to get a few things off my chest, so here it goes.

This post is mainly a personal introspective on my first jam game - Dream Rock (it is short, simple, maybe even thought provoking and hopefully inspiring).

If you are interested in the game, I invite you to take a peak - it is only a few minutes of content, but hopefully will be worth the trouble. Here is a link to it: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/dream-rock

For anyone brave enough to engage in the upcoming text - keep in mind it is primarily meant to push myself to analyse my work more effectively. If you have any questions or would benefit from some clarification, you are welcome to ask.

Prelude

As you might have noticed, it is a tiny project. Part of that is due to starting a day late with 0 preparation (no scripts, plans or overall game structure designs). Another part is simply inexperience, which resulted in a few mistakes that I would hope to avoid in the future.

Big mistakes

A lot of time was spent on some mechanics that ended up irrelevant, invisible, overlapping with better ones, or simply scrapped. Hopefully I gained some valuable experience on how to spot when a mechanic is going nowhere before investing significant amount of time in it.

Invisible mechanics tie into the next mistake - lack of clarity. To keep true to my username, I avoided showing numbers to the player, keeping them under the hood and instead relying on visual indications. This was alright, but the mistake was lack of clear indication/explanation of how the game state is influenced (passively and interactively). This was at least somewhat addressed by adding clearer explanations on itch page. Far from ideal solution, but at least it made the game more approachable.

On the topic of things that were somewhat patched in the itch page, another big mistake was neglecting the narrative. At some point during development, I realized that there will not be enough time to add and polish enough features and mechanics to make the game interesting enough, so decided to focus on the narrative - as soon as the main mechanics and a few other things were finished... Well, that ended up with me trying to get everything else out of the way before really focusing on it, and thus only having a couple of last hours for writing.

Conclusions

Overall, I am glad to have pushed myself to participate, and am quite satisfied with the result - learned some priceless lessons, and am happy with the comments received. These were just the things I needed to help me get over the hurdles I was stuck on with my long-term projects. So, to answer the question posed in the title of this post - yes, thanks to Ludum Dare, my dreams are still alive.

Simple webpage to check your game's "rank" in the jam/compo

Hey guys,

So these past weeks we've been doing a lot of borderline obsessive scrolling through the Games feed to check our grade compared to others. You know, just to get a feeling of how we were doing.

Anyway,it was a bit tedious. So I figured I'd try and create a small tool to check our rank. And now it works and I figured I'd share it with you guys:

https://ld-rank-checker.herokuapp.com/

It's pretty straight forward: paste in your LD entry's URL and submit. Then see the result:

Cyto Killer: Save our Cells postmortem

Val and Boris from Loveapple Games present our latest game: Cyto Killer: Save our Cells! It is a realtime strategy game. We tried to base the game on actual cell biology, and each unit has a background story!

This was a very productive Ludum Dare for us. Beside the game, we did a Ludum Dare rating search engine and 3 warmup games: Reflections, The Gnome, and Ludum Dare: The Game.

This was the first time we did a realtime strategy / tower defense game, and we found it tough to actually turn it into a game with interesting strategic gameplay. But, as time progresses, and the game started taking shape, we became quite excited about the behaviour and dynamics of the different units and enemies, and we ended up creating 7 unit types and 4 enemy types. The game isn't quite balanced, in particular, player doesn't really get a lot of time time to learn how the different elements of the game work. All the levels are winnable though! We did put in a lot of interesting behaviours, and it seems a lot of people enjoyed the game, and some showed they completed it. Thanks everyone for your great feedback!

ENEMIES:

Our VIRUS is inspired by INFLUENZA 1918 (A/H1N1) aka SPANISH FLU, which killed up to 40 M people, outperforming WWI in deadliness. Some claim the death toll was even higher, some think the then recommended (over)dose of aspirin (newly off-patent in USA) as a treatment may have caused some deaths. We also considered Polio, Marburg and Influenza A Hong Kong viruses, but they are a bit complex for 14x14 sprites.

The tiny freshwater SNAIL represents the tropical disease SCHISTOSOMIAIS, aka BILHARZIA or SNAIL FEVER. The snail is not the pathogen but plays host to it (a parasitic flatworm SCHISTOSOMA, aka blood fluke - YUK!) for part of its lifecycle.

Our BACTERIUM started life (in LD46!) as a tapeworm-like intestinal parasite, but ended up as a bacterium that seems to be a crossover between bacillus (rod) and spririllum (spiral) forms. Let see what that mutates into....

SUPERBUGS (Level 5 upwards) are two rare new strains which are proving difficult to eradicate. SUPERBUG1 is a mutation of the distinctive orange rod baccillus salmonella typhi which has developed long yellow flaggelli. SUPERBUG2 is a novel parasitic form of P1V1 resembling Avian flu. Both are difficult to pin down directly but much has been learnt from examining the trails of destruction they leave in various channels.

DEFENDERS:

MACROPHAGES attack invading bacteria by swallowing them up and killing them in an acid bath. Our MACROPHAGES look a bit like monocytes.

The MAC (Membrane Attack Complex) goes after invading bacteria and kills them by penetrating the bacterium's outer and inner membranes (it pops it like a balloon).

Our BACTERIOPHAGE is inspired by Enterobacteria phage Lambda (λ), a bacterial virus which infects the bacterial species Escherichia coli. E-coli - your fave kind of food poisoning!

APOPTOSIS (programmed cell death) is one of the immune system's mechanisms for zapping defective cells (eg pre-cancerous cells) and virus-infected cells. Kill your own cells to survive...

MARKER ANTIBODIES detect and point to pathogens such as bacteria, so that immune system destroyer cells can home in on them and go in for the kill. Marker antibodies grass up other cells - the body's very own snitches :)

The three very hectic days that resulted in Keep Sweep.

Cover2.png

Friday, April 17th

* Tomorrow is the day*. Tomorrow is the day when thoughts will become dreams, and those dreams will turn into ideas, and those ideas will be what my world revolves around for the coming three days.

But let's not get ahead of ourselves.

It isn't as simple as that. I will need time to make things happen. And time is a scarce resource in Ludum Dare. :clock:

I am used to going completely solo when it comes to making games, but this time, I manage to convince a friend to make some art. This will hopefully decrease the workload on me a bit, which will allow me to spend more time on other things (like sound, which I skipped last time). :computer:  :computer:

However, all the time that saves me will not be close to enough to make up for what I will lose, due to a couple of disastrous coincidences.

The first disaster is my fault. Two months earlier I had replied to a text asking

"can you cover my shift 7-12 on the 18th of April?"

with a confident

"yeah, I'm not doing anything that day anyways!"

completely forgetting about Ludum Dare. This means, that I have to spend 5 hours at work, and then another 2-3 hours sleeping after work, as I can't get enough sleep when I need to wake up at 5:45.

The second disaster is purely coincidental. The three days the Jam is going on happens to be the three days leading up to the hardest Physics exam that I've ever had to study for :pencil: (why does it have to be quarks and relativity?), and I haven't studied nearly enough! It doesn't help that my newly-recruited artist is also studying for this.

Despite these setbacks, spirits are high on Friday evening. Sadly, I can't stay up until the theme is announced (03:00 in my timezone) since I have to get up early, but no matter. I was ready.

Saturday, April 18th

:clock6: 5:45 Wake up

:clock7: 7:00 WÖRK

:clock12: 12:00 Done with work. Heading home. Eating lunch. Probably sandwiches :stuffed_flatbread:.

:clock1: 13:00 Call up my artist, we discuss how we were going to approach the theme. We don't really get anywhere, until I realize the double meaning of the word keep :European_castle:. I bring forth my idea :

"Imagine a guy screaming: KEEP! IT ALIVE! and then there being a living Keep stomping him to death? Let's do that!"

and there is no doubt in our minds; this is the perfect idea. Now we just have to start making it!

.

But instead I go to sleep.

:clock5: 17:00 I am tired, delirious and miserable, but awake. Slowly the gears in my head start to turn. Our first plan is to have a top-down game (i want to capture the feel of "Right Click to Necromance", anyone remember that game?)

RCTN.png

:clock7: 19:00 I scrap the top down idea because I don't feel like implementing collisions and position tracking and projectile aiming. It isn't really that difficult, but my brain is quite mushy at this point. Instead, I decide to go with straight up side-view 2D.

:clock730: 19:30 Fill my mouth with delicious dinner. :forkknifeplate:

:clock8: 20:00 Back at it again. I start implementing movement, a camera that can follow the player. I also make some ground from a square that I colored green and set the width to 100 000. (that should be enough, right?) my friend completes the keep design:

keep.gif

He wants to put banners on the keep, so it is only natural that they are the colors of Sweden :flagse: as we are both Swedish. Naturally, we also put Danish :flagdk: banners on the enemy to fuel the Nordic rivalry! House-export.png

:clock9: 21:00 By this point, I am quite tired so I go to sleep. :sleeping_accommodation:

:clock9: 21:05 :bed: Sleep is for AMATEURS. :muscle:  :muscle: I have too many ideas and I feel like I know how to implement them. I am actually surprisingly productive and implement a shooting system. Now, my plan is to have a system where no mouse input is required, to make the game easy to play on laptops. I am happy with the result, but in hindsight, making the game easy to play on laptop just made the aiming clunky and bad for everyone. But as I am making it, I'm just happy it's working!

:clock12: 24:00 Now I'm REALLY tired so I stop writing code that I will have to rework tomorrow anyway. Instead I open Cubase and play around with some sounds. I find the brass sounds quite fun, and I end up making the intro fanfare.:trumpet:

:clock1: 1:00 I actually go to sleep.

Sunday, April 19th

:clock9: 9:00 I wake up. Today, there is no distractions. Nothing stopping me from sitting the entire day in front of the computer, trying to get my thoughts onto the screen.

:clock7: 19:00 Still need to eat, though. :rice:

:clock12: 24:00 By now, I have mostly completed the core elements of the game. I am far from done though. The ground is still ugly as hell, there are no sound effects, there isn't a menu, I only have two enemies, being the archer :bowandarrow: and the cannon :bomb:, and I have only just started on the soundtrack. Most importantly, I haven't made a cutscene where a guy screams KEEP! IT ALIVE! and gets stomped to death. But progress is good. I make a checklist of everything that still needs to be done.

Monday, April 20th

Which just happens to be the only day this century that can be written as 4-20 in both the American and European way of writing dates! :evergreen_tree: :date:

:clock8: 8:00 I wake up. Normally, i would have to spend time getting to school, but in Sweden, higher education has moved to online classes due to the pandemic. This saved me time (but I'm not sure i did anything productive with said time).

:clock9: 9:00 School. I don't care what I'm supposed to be doing. I need to get comfortable enough with Physics so i can justify spending time on finishing the game later.

:clock4: 16:00 School is done. I have focused on tomorrows exam for the bigger part of the last seven hours. Now it is time to get some stuff done.

:clock5: 18:00 Somehow, I am starting to get through my checklist.

I make a ground sprite and make the ground infinite. :ballotboxwithcheck: Ground i guess-export.png I get sound effects done. :ballotboxwithcheck:

:musical_note:

I haphazardly frankenstein together code from different scripts to make two new enemies, a catapult and a ballista tower. :ballotboxwith_check:

Ballista_tower.png Catapultt.png

And I finish the soundtrack.:ballotboxwith_check:

:trumpet: :drum: :trumpet: :musical_score:

It's time to start working on the opening cutscene.

:clock9: 21:00 I am done with the cutscene. :ballotboxwith_check: I managed to complete every single TODO on my checklist (which usually doesn't happen when I write one). Now begins the agonizing task of checking for issues...

:clock11: 23:00 Thanks to my brand new lightning fast Ryzen 5 3600 CPU :zap: (that I bought literally because compiling for HTML5 took so long), I can fix issues with resolution, presentation and other problems quite quickly. Is this it? Am I finished?

:clock12: 24:00 The sound is clipping. I've never had this happen before. I need to fix it. :mute:

Suddenly, I feel calm. No, I don't need to fix it. No game is perfect on release day, weird glitches can be fixed tomorrow, without breaking the rules (i think?).

I throw together a page on itch.io and one on this website.

I press publish...

And that's it. The game is done. I am happy with the result. Considering I lost pretty much a full day of productivity due to school and work, the end product is way better than i would've thought, and in my opinion, it blows my earlier submissions out of the water completely.

Save your clumsy suicidal chicken from certain death!

ChickenLuck1.png

Hey guys, so I thought I could do a little wrap up of my Compo entry called Chicken Luck. It was my fifth Ludum Dare game and since game coding is my job for several years now, I thought I'm adequately prepared for the challenge.

Graphics: I do have small graphic design background but it was some time since I created any 3D model or graphics of any sort so I at least tried some things in Blender before game jam started to not struggle with most simple tasks. I must say I was very happy how Blender evolved in time and user experience was actually quite good. I've used single file for all models relying heavily on collections. Export to Unity was without issues. I even had some time to do some rigging and animations. This was most surprising to me as my previous experience with rigging was some poor human autorig few years back. But guess what? It's not that complicated and with Blender's Auto IK feature it is actually possibile to get useful results with just very simple rig.

Coding: This was my first entry where I didn't use any custom code base on top of standard Unity libraries. Oh boy, what a freedom! No unnecessary UI codes, game managers, loaders, tweeners and what not. Just a blank page and the sensation to start from ground up.

Design: I feel like I still have much to learn in regards of design. First I wanted to have a lot of physics environment interactions which would make the game more interesting and easy to make. For example some animated blocks could push chicken to empty space. Oh boy, what was I thinking? I literally killed several hours trying to figure out how to combine physics interactions with player controls. After I got something finally working I realized that result is not smooth so I threw it all and redesigned the game to current state.

Sound: I think this is my weakest point now. Although I borrowed a recording device from my friend and I'm quite happy with sound effects, I was not able to add any music. I do not have the skill needed to put together something ear-pleasing in like two hours. That is definitely something I would like to work on in the future.

Overall it was again a great learning experience and motivation for future development. I love Ludum Dare!

P.S.: I would be very happy if you have time to play and rate my game:

Bulánci of Dragons and Archery!

When we designed Hatching Dragons, we had few goals in mind. One of them was the bow drawing mechanic, that would be basically the core of the game. But we didn't want to go for a mouse aim/twin stick shooter, so we dug deep into our memory.

Back in the days when indie and freeware was basically the same, there was this game called Bulánci, which become a legend here in Czech republic. Everybody knew it, there was no LAN party without at least few rounds of Bulánci, no school break without four people on single keyboard playing Bulánci deathmatch.

So that's where we took the inspiration for four directional movement style, that allows for interesting, though not very common gameplay, and also for some brutal PvP. Shame we didn't have enough time to finish the PvP mode, but the foundation is there, so maybe a post jam version can improve that. Let us know if you're interested!

Play these 5 fun games that still need some ratings to reach 20!

Capture.PNG

I've worked on non of these games, but they all need a few more votes in the last 45h, in order to get get results, so let's get them there! Do feel free to comment further games that need a few more ratings to reach 20 below this post!

Schroedingers Daughter (Webbuild available) Play as the daugther of reknown physican Erwin Schroedinger (as in Shroedingers cat) and save the kittens from his cruel experiments. Super fun idea, quite challanging, and kind of teaches you quantum physics on the side!

Cat-5 (Webbuild available) Ever wanted the feeling of being on an oldschool win 95 machiene and battelign with a catimage generating virus? Well who wouldn't!

Unfurmiliar Territory (webbuild available) This one is a classical sidescroll shooter, but it has impressive pixel graphics and the best acapella shoot soudn effect I've heared in this jam!

Tales of Freedom (webbuild available) Given the theme I'd have though sneak and stealth games would be all over the place. Turns out I was wrong (somehow everyone went straigt for fire ...or eggs?!). Anyhow if you want to satisfy the sneak itch afterall this game has got you covered.

Petra (Windows only build, UE) If you are anything like me you can never quite get enough oldschool puzzle & trap dugeon crawler. This one comes in a first person UE style.

The Dark Cave - Post Jam Update

Over the last couple of weeks I've been hard at work reviewing and redesigning my Ludum Dare entry, The Dark Cave. Based on all the positive feedback and attention the game has received, I have decided to continue development into a full game. Your feedback has been an invaluable part of this process and is deeply appreciated, thank you.

If you would like some context, you can check it out on Browser and Windows Desktop here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/the-quiet-caves

One of the best features to have come out of the game was the 'sound mechanic'. As many of you have pointed out, this mechanic was underused within my Jam entry. As part of the post-jam development I have been heavily experimenting with the sound mechanic, creating a bunch of really fun game-play elements and systems that I am currently still exploring and developing. I believe there is a lot that can be done with this mechanic and I'm really enjoying playing around with it - the game is practically designing itself at this point.

New Content - Sneak Peak

Here is a sneak peak at one of the new enemy types you'll encounter. The currently unnamed 'Spiky Ball' creature telegraphs its attack direction to the player. Once it hears a sound it moves over to that location and sets a new target path, killing whatever creature is in its way. One or two of these can be quite easy to avoid, but things get a lot more complicated and fun when lots are on screen at once.

SpikeyBallsOptimised.gif

Artistic Direction

Although it wasn't my intention, I had accidentally created an atmospheric art style out of squares and some lighting. This became one of the most liked aspects of the game and a leading factor in further design decisions during the jam.

Post-Jam I have been experimenting with different ideas and tools to both improve and speed up the artistic development of the game. However, I still want to keep the same black and grey aesthetic as I feel it lends itself well to a game about blind creatures living in a dark cave.

One aspect I've been experimenting with is the use of parallax effects. I originally took a scripted approach to this, but eventually ended up using a perspective camera instead. It still needs work, but I currently like the results so far and believe it could add a lot to the atmosphere when properly used.

The gif compression made it difficult to properly distinguish the layers, but here is an example of how this looks at the moment:

ParallaxOptimised.gif

Next Steps

I've already designed some of the areas and a bunch of fun creatures and challenges. The controls have been improved and I'm currently experimenting with climbing ropes and rock formations. I've been experimenting with different character designs and story elements, but I don't want to say much more at this stage.

I'm excited to share more in the future!

Thank You!

The feedback and support for my game entry has been so inspiring. This really is an amazing community and I can't thank you all enough!

If you would like to follow the post-jam development of The Dark Cave, I'll be posting updates on my Twitter from time to time.

Things I've benefited from the jam!

this jam was the best one I've joined in my life! not only I was overwhelmed by the positive feedback... yesterday I was thinking about how good this over all was... and I wrote a list of goodies!

but before you read the list, you need to know that my game is a decision based game, and you manage scarce resources to win.

  1. Got Introduced to Important games. thanks for one comment and a streamer who played my game.
    a. 60 Seconds (the entire series)
    b. The Oregon Trail.
already played both and learned tons to improve the game!
  2. Played and analyzed all decisions based games in the Jam that I can find.. I asked for these at this post.
  3. Wrote an in-depth article about my analyzation.
  4. Watched a lot streamers play the game (amazing feedback).
  5. Got tons of important feedback on my game through comments.
  6. Met really cool other devs.. some had decision based games like mine and I followed them on twitter, added to discored... etc
  7. I want to Make Mammoth Expedition which is a practice project and publish it to stores.
  8. I never was closer to being on any store.
  9. Achieved the most game I am proud of. people I know or here seems to really enjoy it instead of the huh-interesting response I get.
  10. Worked with my wife and my brother on something.
  11. Got a little bit of exposure to my game. Some people might play the full version (even if one plays it its something)
  12. Proved that I can make fun games (I never proved that before, only that I can do code or interesting mechanics).
  13. Tested the System to its fullest(my game uses a really complicated system that I've been building) trying to finish something with it as polished as this showed me a lot of bugs and limitations that I needed to improve before trying to build something big (and then waste time fixing a lot of content).
  14. Realized what speed-up tools needed.

a. Event editor panel to speed up event creation(I am doing advanced editor scripting for the first time in unity)
b. Balancing tool (its really complicated to explain but basically I can foresee average resources with every situation)
c. Testing tool(to pass days. insert events quickly when I need to test them...etc)
d. Localization system. (realized this should be done early or it will be very costly)

also, if you want to play our game and give us feedback here. Banner.png

thanks for reading !

looking for feedback on Level 2

Hi all. This is been such a fun experience. Thank you to everyone for sharing your a bit of yourself in all these thoughtful, fun, and artfully crafted games.

Since the competition is ending I wondered if anyone wanted to try Level 2 of my game, thump-thump.

https://thumpthump.herokuapp.com/index.html

The instructions that appear during the game appear too quickly I realize now, so I am explaining them here.

Level 1 is easy, just use ARROW KEYS and keep bumping into hearts to keep you and them full.

On level 2:

Use the SPACE BAR to place 2 "fans" that can blow the hearts in any direction. These can help them avoid the white "quicksand" or more quickly free them from it.

CLICKING THE SPACE BAR TO PLACE "FANS" level 2 part 1.gif

HOLDING THE SPACE BAR WHILE OVER THE "FANS" TO CHANGE THEIR DIRECTION level 2 place arrow.gif

I will definitely reciprocate and leave feedback for anyone willing to give this a spin.

Thanks! - Jon

Can I Get a Hundred Ratings

Hello there, this was my first Ludum dare!!! 😑😃🙂 Also, I am a bit busy lately but if u want, leave a link to your game below in the comments and I might play it. (I can not guarantee I will play it because I am busy but leave a link and I might play it)

Need a few more ratings !

Hey everyone ! I just made my first jam game, which was a pretty great experience. However, I am missing 5 ratings to get on the leaderboard. I would really like to get these last 5 ratings, to at least show up on the leaderboard. So, if you have some time, I would be very happy if you could play and rate my game !

It is called "It's Gonna Work !" (https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/its-gonna-work) Play as a scientist that thinks his experiment is gonna work ! Help him stop the other scientists from closing his portal. In this fast-paced game, there is only one goal; KEEP THE PORTAL ALIVE !

Have a great day !

What's up ?

Hi there!

Last two days before the end of voting, tried so many games... Had a blast! It was an amazing emotional but also overwhelming and exhausting experience. I made a list of my favorite entries on itch.io, out of the many I have tested : https://itch.io/c/852118/ld46-favorites - Any favorites in common?

In case you're interested in a weird poin&click with old-school vibes, be sure to check our entry before the deadline! I'll do my best to try your game as well, after my work day, if you drop a feedback - constructive criticism very welcomed :) Had the secret goal of reaching 80 ratings, we're very close and it would mean a lot to our team.

On another note, what is everyone up to? Curious to know if you plan to continue developement and polishing of your game post-jam - or if you're already doing so.

As for me, I have finally picked the art of Consequences of Gardening back up again. Here's a sneak peak of my progression so far for the market scene. And guess what? Using references instead of just half-assing things in a rush actually makes a difference - we all knew that, yeah.

market_export.png

I also discovered this fabulous website, and couldn't resist drawing the main character : https://aidn.jp/wowa/196694826 - makes me laugh uncontrollably for 20 minutes every time I lay my eyes on it.

Any jam / post-jam screenshots of your game to share ?

Cheers!

Space Station Express Post Mortem

This is a post mortem for my LD46 entry, Space Station Express.

The Idea

Usually when the theme is announced I jot down a whole list of ideas, and then choose the one I like the most. For whatever reason, this theme only really made me think of one idea: transporting some live cargo in a spaceship. It seems like there are more ideas you could come up with from this theme, but that was the one I thought of. I decided to name it Space Station Express in a sort of vague Futurama reference.

What Went Well

  • I was using a new game engine for this one, Godot. Previously I've usually used UE4 for 3D stuff and libGDX for 2D stuff. I made a nearly complete game before the LD started to get some practice with Godot, and it mostly paid off in that I didn't have to deal with too many surprises (though, see below 🤦‍♂️).
  • I'm pretty happy with the idea. I think it mostly hit the sweet spot of simple enough for new players but complex enough to allow for some varied gameplay.
  • Most of the graphics. In particular, I'm pretty happy with how the background turned out.
  • I used my library of helpful Godot C# functions, which came in handy. I even added a few new ones that I created during the LD.

What Did Not Go Well

  • For this project, I decided to go with Godot's most experimental flow, HTML5+Mono. This was only added in 3.2 and it's still very new and experimental. I'd used it before, so I thought I knew all the pitfalls, but as it turned out I did not. In particular, it seems that garbage collection doesn't work at all, which means that unless you can somehow have zero allocations, you will inevitably overflow the available memory leading to a crash. I tried various fixes, and at one point I thought the issue only affected Chrome, but as it turned out, it affects all browsers. I've opened a bug with the developers, but it looks like it's not going to be easy to fix, unfortunately.
  • Sound levelling was another problem. For some reason, all sounds were shifted too high but I failed to notice this during testing. To help not blow out people's ears, I've reduced the sound level by 25 decibels.
  • Some people mentioned that they couldn't figure out how much health they had. This confused me until I realized that I have a 1600 pixel tall monitor, and I'd foolishly set the window height to 1080 pixels. With the window decorations, this meant that for someone with a 1080p screen some parts of the UI would likely be pushed off the screen. This was why people were saying they couldn't figure out how much health they had. I fixed this by making the game fullscreen by default.
  • It's fairly minor, but once again I forgot to allow for people with AZERTY keyboards. Nobody actually mentioned it this time, but I still should have remembered.
  • Not directly related to the game, but it looks like I started judging other people's games too late. I'm only at 15 ratings even though I've rated 57 other games.

Anyway, if you want to try Space Station Express go here. I'd really appreciate a few more ratings.

Just about the end!

With just over one day left until voting ends, I figured I would give one final push to see if anyone would like to check out my game before the voting period is over! If you are at all interested or have some free time, I would greatly appreciate if you checked out and gave some critical feedback to my compo entry for Ludum Dare 46.

This was an incredible experience and I can't wait to come back for the next one! I also had loads of fun playing some other games (although I have been fairly busy so I didn't get to play as many as I would have hoped) and would love to see some of these games become something bigger and better beyond the jam.

My entry was a fast-paced, 3D, puzzle game. If this sounds interesting to you, please give it a go! I would love to hear back from as many people as I possibly can to help me grow as a developer!

Thanks to everyone who has played or will play my game, and thank you to everyone who took the time to read my ramblings! :)

Looking for a game to rate?

* If you haven't tried my compo entry, "Defend the Loot!" why not check it out? The objective of the game is to defend the loot chest as waves of enemies attack you. Before each wave you get a minute to build up your base. There are 10 levels, getting to the end wont be easy! *

So, this was my first ever entry on a Ludum dare game jam. I just wanted to ask you guys about the future of this game. Do you guys think it's a game original enough to be published on somewhere like Steam and Playstore ? or should I work on some other project instead? I really appreciate your feedback. Thanks.

One day left to play my game!

It was a lot of fun doing my first Ludum Dare jam, and even more exciting that I didn't start until Saturday and still managed to make a playable game by Sunday afternoon!

If anyone is interested in trying out my multiplayer twist on Conway's Game of Life during this final horus, check out Life Alive. It uses a node.js/sockets.io backend to allow multiplayer players to control special cells that can move between the generations in the Game of Life. If you have a friend get them to try with you at the same time so you can see how the multiplayer aspect works. See who can keep their cell alive the longest!

And thank you to everyone who took the time to try and game and provide all that wonderful feedback! It really made my day.

flamaraderie

FireCultist (5).gif

It's 1 day left and I haven't made any post here. So here you go, this is our first Ludum, and we've gone mainstream with the fire idea for our game flamaraderie. But we tried to implement the jam's theme to multiple layers of narrative. Like cannibalism, which I think has a good kind of synergy-contrast with the theme. Then we designed the ending to wrap the experience to one that feels tightly embrace the theme. Sadly the jam version of our game has a bug on the ending, so if you want to see the proper ending, play the post-jam version.

Also, the game has a terrible UX, I tried to fix some of it in the post-jam, but some problems remain.

OLD SSOldem640.png NEW SSNe/em640.png

Overall tho, I'm quite satisfied with this jam. Will definitely try again next time. Please play flamaraderie on https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/flamaraderie
