DoomCake – final

Just in the nick of time, I present…

DoomCake

Strange orange sweets are falling from the sky, causing sugary snacks to mutate and go crazy.  You are a stranded survivor, who must try to last long enough to be rescued by a helicopter.  The price for failure: Eaten by your own snacks!

At first, the mutated snacks are slow-moving, but the more orange sweets they eat, the faster they will approach.  To have any hope of lasting out while resuce arrives, you must eat the sweets first.

The game can be downloaded at http://www.banni.f2s.com/Banni_LD14_DoomCake.zip

If you have LOVE installed, then you can directly download/play the game at http://www.banni.f2s.com/doomcake.love

EDIT: To linkify the link, and add a .love direct download

looking forward to trying this again with having had some more sleep since the compo ended. Not a lot of sleep mind you… but some. I tried it last night and was just way too tired to get very far. I think I captured like 2-3 tokens max no matter what I tried. :)

I think the game is gonna make no sense the first few times you play, regardless of how sleepy you are… it’s supposed to be confusing and discombobulating. But with multiple playthroughs (if you can stand the boredom) you might start to make sense of the story.

Thanks so much for all the comments, guys. I assume I am talking to no one but myself right now, but that’s okay, I’m used to that.

PET THAT KITTEN! [Final]

Here’s my final build.

Phew, a few minutes to spare.

First Ludum Dare, first XNA game. It’s pretty simple, but I’m pretty proud of it.

Download it here.

I was in a rush to upload this so here are the control explanations.

Start –  Enter

“Press Y” – Q

“Press B” – E

Drop bomb – Space

Movement – WASD

The game is meant to be played with a 360 controller, so if you’ve got one plug it in.

The Growth – Final

TheGrowthFinalScreenShot

Lack of motivation at the half way point means that I never did get around to art.  Also, the lack of playtesting makes me nervous.

But I think I have a pretty neat game.

Click here to play The Growth online.

Download the source + SFW.

Edit: If you can’t see the text (flash under linux?) please try this build with embedded fonts.

Fun! It wasn’t obvious at first that the enclosed areas had to be rectangular. Are there no levels after the one with candles?

I’m glad you liked it. Candles is it.

wah. I wanted like 100 more levels… guess that means the game is good though!

A high resolution vector version of this would be amazing.

@James: you mean place the walls as vector line segments instead of pixels? That is a really neat idea.

My final entry…

Black Hole Comming

Update: I removed the import error (sorry to people that can’t play it), and reduced the zip size by removing version control and useless files.

Update2: Added WIN32 exe

This crashes on linux. I just get this:

Loading chipmunk for Linux (32bit) [/home/sean/games/ludumdare/game/pymunk/libchipmunk.so]

And a second later a very silent crash

Well, it is hard… I’ll put up a new version on my website that deals with that in a couple of days. The biggest ‘feature’ that adds to the difficulty is that your shots can hit dead enemies. Once I removed that, my friendly slugs easily licked that salt.

I think the LD torrent was made before I fixed the crashing bug (which was just a missing ‘continue’ loop logic). I recommend the download link in the blog entry.

Finally: Humpty Doompty!

Screenshot uploading was failing me there for a while. Anyway here is my entry zipped:

Download

but it’s a flash game so why not just

Play it now!

Warning: My splash screen won’t load and neither will my win/lose screens, hence the missing image thing on the main menu. Cest la vie. Also ran out of time so no instructions or similar help is provided.

Basically left and right arrow move you. Drinking nog extends the end of the wall doom cloud thing away from you, but makes you stagger all over the place. Drinking buzz increases your speed and the responsiveness of your controls. Running into the red egg-beaters (yeah didn’t get time to go over that piece of art) hurts you. You can lose by running into the doom cloud, falling over the side, and losing all your health. To win, get humpty home safely and into bed.

Might post an update tomorrow night fixing the splash screens and any other minor bugs.

Hahah….very cool!

One last foodphoto

I did this before the deadline, honest! Just had to wait for ffmpeg to encode the giant AVI to MPG, then upload to YouTube and waiting for it to process. Anyway, feel free to laugh at me now. :) 15 peeps in about 2 and a half minutes.

I just realized this might be toward the top of the listing for a while. Better make this a link.

06. May 2009 · 02:22 UTC
Hahaha, you need to put some Eye of the Tiger over that video!

By Touching It With Your Spikes

It’s completely horrible and it’s not actually possible to beat it, but at least I got something made! I finished it before the deadline, as the members of #ludumdare (or their chat logs) will attest. Left and right to move, up to swap left and right (I probably should have left that one out), down to go into reverse.

Download for Windows

Edit: It’s a lot easier if you use F5 to save and F6 to load! It’s possible to make it to the tip of the black/grey line, but not to get onto the second set of dots. But you can win if you press O!

Clarification edit: The dark grey lines are the floor and the light grey background is an infinite void hole. As long as some part of you is touching the dark grey, you won’t fall into the hole. Unfortunately, I made the level in the very last two minutes of the compo, so I didn’t have time to test it; the result is that the level is impossible, and most of it is extremely hard. If you want to find some enjoyment in the game, try getting onto the first dot; that’s actually a reasonable challenge. As it is, this game mostly functions as a demo of the controls.

Glacier Final

Sorry it’s about 20 minutes late, I had a last minute problem with my release build. It’s still really incomplete, so it’s not like I’m going to win anything anyways.

Here it is.. in all it’s horrible incompleteness.

Glacier Final

The idea is to save the mammoths from the oncoming glacier by placing ice blocks (tetris pieces) ..

i’ll put up a post-compo version with docs and stuff later.. phew… dinner time

Downloaded devIL, then was missing sdl.dll. Downloaded that. Title screen’s all weird (upside-down, some gibberish) but the game itself looks cool!

Also, note that the edge of the playfield isn’t drawn. So if it won’t let you place a piece that looks clear, that’s probably why. For example, the L piece in the screenshot is off the edge of the playfield.

Keys:

right mouse to rotate tetromino

left mouse to place

F5 – Toggle “dbg” display (shows tiles directly, useful)

F8 – Go into level editor

Hope!

[edit: This is not my entry into the competition! This was posted after the deadline. See Heart for my actual entry.]

I also made another game yesterday, in two hours, during the Klik of the Month. It’s called ‘Hope!’, and since I also followed the Ludum Dare theme with it, why not share it with you, guys.

The other last foodphoto, and post-mortem

Dinner last night was Chinese.

Clockwise from upper left: cold dish platter (chicken, roast pork, char siew and jellyfish), diced duck in lettuce wrap, roast chicken, tofu mock-meat with veggies, dessert (hard to explain unless you live in Asia), fried shrimp in wasabi sauce, steamed fish, and noodles in the centre. Not pictured: Peking duck and one other dish which I forget – probably veggies of some description, if memory serves.

Hooray for crappy photography skills and almost-as-crappy cellphone camera.

Actually, this was my grandmother’s birthday. Dinner took 4 hours, which kind of put a ding in my development time. Food was good if somewhat “innovative” (roast chicken on top of fruit salad?).

Well, on to the post-mortem.

What I did right:

– I was using very familiar tools.

– Tools were mostly in place before development began.

– I deliberately left out 3D skeletal animation from my toolset. Integrating it would have tempted me to make animated 3D characters, which would have killed the project due to the time required.

– Character sketches at the start gave me a very clear direction.

– Chose to hard-code my level rather than making a more open framework.

– Froze development half an hour before the end of the compo, to avoid running out of time.

What I did wrong:

– Not enough practice with composing music. The first song took 2 and a half hours. The second was half-done in about half an hour. In the end I scrapped music because I couldn’t finish the boss fight theme in time.

– Didn’t build my toolset with quick development in mind. Some features which would have been useful were left out, like sprite animation and object state-management.

– Included toolset features, like lighting, which pushed the game’s specs to a point where some people couldn’t run it. :(

– Edit: Made the game too hard. I forgot that most people are not shmupfans.

– Attended the birthday dinner. I kid, I kid – making Grandma happy is usually a good thing, and I got a nice meal out of it too.

Extinguish

You play on the side of the advancing wall of doom, which is trying to engulf all. The lousy civilization which is getting in you way has set up barriers, though, in an attempt to hinder the darkness! Your job is to destroy these defences so that the cloud can continue its conquest. (Edit: I posted a bit more info about the process at my blog)

arcticum

If you know what Löve is, and have it installed already, just grab arcticum.love and run it.

If you don’t know what Löve is*, then take the all included ready to roll super dooper binaries for you favorite OS:

Each package contains instructions on how to run the game, and the following Readme. Enjoy!

EDIT:

  • Known bug. When you win (ie get the fourth item), the game crashes (instead of going back to menu). But don’t worry. You still won! =)
  • Game resolution is 1024×600. It might show up weirdly (strech for instance) on 4:3 screens. Press F on title screen to switch to window mode, much nicer.
  • The sources of the game are in the .love file, which is really a renamed zip.

arcticum, seal protection
=========================
The game where we learn that global warming is a seal conspiration.
By Noé Falzon <firstname.lastname(a)aliceadsl.fr>

You play the role of the protector of the seals. On the small island in the bottom right corner of the screen are happy and peaceful seals. Their greatest ennemy, the polar bears, are a constant threat. If the ice shelf ever reaches the island, the bears could cross over and feast on the poor seals.

Hopefuly, ice melts. So seals have fireballs.

Unfortunately, fireballs are a very temporary solution. This is why seals have devised the best weapon against ice: global warming. If they could collect four sources of global warming, they would permanently get rid of the polar bear scum.

Game controls
————-

Mouse: aiming the fireball cannon
Left click: firing the fireball cannon
Right click or space bar: switch weapon

Tab: pause game
Escape: quit
F: toggle fullscreen (in titlescreen)

There are three kind of bonuses, with effect limited in time:
– larger blast radius (red ring)
– faster fireball (green triangle)
– slower ice (blue square)

Bonuses take effect if they reach the island. To help them do that, use the fireball explosions.

Collect the goals in the same way.

The game is over if the ice reaches the island or when you have collected the four goals.

Game modes
———-

There is a normal mode, as described previously.
There is a survival mode, for the hardcore players. In the survival mode, there are no global warming crap thingies to collect. The ice is faster, and the only goal is to survive as long a possible. Notice the timer counter in the top right corner.

Notes
—–

Of course, the bigger cannon is slower too aim.
Due to time constraints, the bears are implemented but don’t have sprites…
The drawing of ice can be buggy if some faces cross each other.
There is no real winning screen.
This global warming thing is all made up. And fireball? Seriously…

License

The source code is under GNU GPL v3.
All graphics, sound and music are cc-by-nc-sa.
