I’m in! …my birth cry will be the sound of every phone on this planet ringing in unison.

I’m going super pro this time, going for two of the best tools I know of:

Unity (with WebGL target, so people will actually bother to try the game). Maybe just simple geometric shapes, so no art tool required. I don’t think I have the time to draw anything while trying to figure Unity out. I’ve never used Unity, so it might be pretty challenging to get anything submitted, but I felt it was high time to switch from Flash. I’m following this great free Unity tutorial in preparation.

For audio I’ll play with Ableton Live. My last entry was audio-only but did really well, which made me realize just how important that is. Ableton looks suuper confusing, but I’ve found it to actually be quite intuitive. It’s a bit like Buzz Machines used to be, allowing you to chain a lot of effects together in fun ways and can even do some melody generation with “arpeggiator” and other neat tools. It’s expensive, but has a free trial.

The Furniture is Alive

Do you like suspenseful horror games?

Do you enjoy creeping around in the dark with a flashlight? How about jumpscares?

If these sound appealing to you, try “The Furniture is Alive“. An alien being has taken the shape of desks, chairs, water coolers and beds. Don’t turn your back on them.

Unity users, remember to include your data folder

After 48 hours of intense work, I generated the PC version of my horror game The Furniture is Alive in Unity. I double clicked on the generated .exe file, played through the game once to see that it was working fine, then uploaded the exe to a server and posted the link on Ludum Dare and went to sleep.

What did I do wrong? Well, turns out that the .exe file actually isn’t self-contained! When I opened it up on my PC to test, there was actually another data folder that it was accessing, but which I wasn’t aware of. When I distributed only the exe file, it would not work for anyone else because of the missing folder.

Don’t forget to include your data folder when uploading your Unity game!

I have updated my submission so that the data folder is now included. Hopefully it now works, please give it another try!

I’m out!

No ratings?

I don’t know if you are in the ratings or no-ratings camp, but for me the ratings were the whole point. My goal is to make a game that ranks higher than games I’ve created before. With no ratings, I have almost zero motivation to take part in this. If a handful of people cheated, that only affects the rankings so slightly it makes very little difference (so your game is #332 instead of #315).

It pains me that LD has gathered such momentum, only to risk becoming something I’m no longer interested in. On the other hand I’m happy that now I’ll have 48 hours to spend on something else!

I don’t fault you for not wanting to enter, I too enter to see if I can beat my last game. The only reason I’m going to take part in this one is just so my streak isn’t broken again. I missed out on LD24 back in august of 2012 and I kind of wish I hadn’t. Anyways, hopefully we’ll see you for the next LD in December!

I really like the ratings too, but I still can gauge pretty easily whether or not I’ve improved or not on my own. I’m also competing with a friend for once, so the jam will be pretty new and fun too.

I totally agree. I’m only planning to make a very short game to not break my streak of eight LDs in a row.

Hello,

Ludum Dare 37

I’m in

I’m in.

Will use Ableton Live for music composing and gapless5 for playback. Tayasui for art (or just generate geometric shapes from code), JavaScript with pixi.js for graphics. Will possibly embed a JS 6502 emulator such as 6502js to experiment with.

Know your tools

I just managed to get a blob to appear which can be moved around with the keyboard. Might have been a good idea to study pixi.js a bit more before starting! How hard could it be? ©

Not quite my tempo

My feeling after making my game depend on music synch in JavaScript and spending hours with no sleep trying to make it work.

I’m in

Engine: Three.js

Language: Javascript

Platform: WebGL in browser

IDE: Sublime Text 2

Graphics: Tayasui Sketches, possibly Blender

Music: Ableton Live (Intro), maybe Pink Trombone for sound effects and Audacity to edit them

For my base code I just have have a very short snippet that puts some pixels on the screen with Three.js, reads the keyboard and plays some sound.

This will be my tenth Ludum Dare game!

Why is coming up with an idea so painful?

That "nnnghhh" hopeless feeling every time at this stage when you need to come up with an idea out of nowhere. Yet somehow it always works out, but every time it feels like it won't. Maybe it really won't this time.

Greater Good | Bounce Springsteen

Game about a bunch of bouncy spring-creatures that slowly run away from enemies. Too slowly. But maybe if you sacrifice a few, the others can make it.

I'm in

Ready to put my game out into the world, but I'll only have ~10 hours to spend on it.

Think I'll go with a simple JavaScript game this time.

Keep what alive?

Maybe the thing to keep alive could be a tentacle monster that tries to eat anything near it, even things it shouldn't.

250 lines of code later...

And all I have is a ball guy who can jump from one platform to another.

I want to get comfortable with doing 3D stuff with WebGL, so will use babylon.js as my renderer this time. I think the rules used to state that you have to declare your base code, so mine is just the messy Babylon test code I've been prepping with.

Since I have family, I'll only have about 10 hours to make a game, but will do my best.

Pling

~5 hours in and I have elevator doors that open and close. Yes, I'm definitely going to win, so you might just give up now lol
