Getting ready for my first Ludum Dare JAM

Hey I’m preparing for Ludum Dare and here are my tools:

Language – C#

Engine – Unity

Modeler – Blender

Textures (If I use any) – OpenGameArt/CG Textures

Audio – BFXR/Audacity

So exciting to do this… it will give me a heck of a lot of experience with Unity! Wish me luck!

Connected dimensions based game; take a look!

I’ve been working for 14 hours total now, here’s my progress:

Screenshot01Screenshot02

You can switch between these two alternate dimensions to solve each puzzle. I’m really happy with how far I’ve come, the simplicity of the game will make it easy for me to make the puzzles. I’m planning on making plenty of levels for solving so I will get back to work! See you later and thanks for reading!

BTW no official name yet, still brainstorming.

Almost there!

My game is almost finished, I’m spending the rest of the day polishing and retouching. Also, be prepared to see the finished project tonight!

All done!

My game, Alternation is FINALLY complete. I can sleep in peace.

My Entry

First Ludum Dare Impressions; Post Mortem

Ludum Dare 30 has been a very unique experience for me. It’s shown me my abilities and limits in game development. It’s been a whole lot of fun rating everyone else’s game, too. Great ideas out there.

I believe I did very well for my first Ludum Dare, check out my entry,  Alternation:

Thanks for all the feedback by the way! Please rate if you can on Kongregate because I am getting few ratings.

Now, I made numerous mistakes and wrong turns with my entry, but I also did some great things with it. Here’s how Ludum Dare weekend basically went along:

Before the theme was announced, I was focused on making a 3d game with Unity, preferably a platformer. I also wanted to enter in the Jam.

When the theme was announced, I immediately started to brainstorm for ideas, among these ideas:

  • A top-down where you have to get to other planets by shooting other spaceships.
  • A platformer where you travel through dimensions to a goal.
  • An FPS where you shoot things that attack you (so unique).

I went with the second one and I begun to make a prototype. I decided to make the entry a puzzle fps without combat, much like Portal (couldn’t help it, love that game so much). The prototype took a couple hours to get to a point where it functioned. I then began to build the first level.

Upon finishing this level I determined the core gameplay, the ability to switch between dimensions by clicking. I started to work on level two when I realized I should introduce a new gameplay feature. I did just that with the addition of levers. I later added “death blocks” to level four. I made six levels in total, and play tested them multiple times.

I finally got to a point where I liked the feel and mood of the game and I submitted it around 8:00 pm Sunday. I thought the game was decent enough for Kongregate, so that’s where I hosted it.

After release, I slowly received feedback and I saw the good and bad of my game. Feel free to read the list:

The Good:

  • The audio I used was completely awesome. Thanks to audionautix.com.
  • The dimension switching was (almost) free of bugs.
  • The puzzles proved to be challenging.

The Bad:

  • The puzzles turned out to be a bit too difficult and awkward for some people.
  • Only six levels are present, sorry guys.
  • Most of the levels rely on parkour/reflex skills, which was a really bad move.

Overall, this was a great first Ludum Dare for me, hope you all like my entry and do well with yours!

Thanks for reading and extra thanks to everyone who posted feedback! See ya!

LD33

I’m in!

This will be my second Ludum Dare, my first being LD30, which was one year ago. I’ve been inconveniently busy for the past two Ludum Dare dates, but I can finally get around to doing this once again in August. I won’t be too competitive with my game, I’ll just make sure to have a bunch of fun this weekend.

I will be entering in the Jam like before, these are my tools:

  • Engine – Unity
  • Language – C#
  • Modeler – Blender
  • Images – Gimp/Photoshop
  • Sound – Sfxr/Audacity

I wish everyone the best of luck! Happy game-developing!

48 Hour Mark! My Jam Entry So Far…

I’m almost done (kind of)! I have almost all of my game’s foundation down so all there is left to do is put together some levels and an ending. The levels are very short but they will be packed with content for more gameplay. The cut scenes will probably lengthen the game as well. I think I’ll announce a final title closer to when I release the game. Don’t forget to comment and check at my Facebook and IndieDB.

Post Mortem: Hymn of the Sages

Hey everyone, I hope the judging phase has been going well for you! Thanks to anyone who’s rated/commented my game! Here’s the Post Mortem for my entry, Hymn of the Sages, a game focused on regaining demonic power and breaking out of containment. If you haven’t played it, try it first before reading. I made a Time lapse video too, watch it here.

Hymn of the Sages

What I wanted to do…

After going over many possible game ideas relating to monsters, I stuck to my “demon entity” idea. Possessing enemies sounded like a great puzzle solving mechanic and it fit with the demonic mood.

The initial visions I had for my characters were heavily inspired by Shadow of the Colossus, one of my all time favorite games. The purple outlines were added to give more obvious indication between light and dark. It didn’t take long for me to realize that I wanted the demon character (dubbed Nimrod when I started, comment if you get the reference :3) to develop throughout the game. As it developed, it would gain more power and it’s abilities would change slightly. The main story was to have this character defeat the sages that were sealing it’s power. I also wanted to expand on what I learned with noded AI in my last jam.

What I did…

So, looking at the overall product I entered, it ended up being close to what I envisioned. I spent a lot of time creating the base game structure, programming how it would handle cut scenes, doors opening, etc.

The AI was programmed early on, so I began by testing gameplay. Much time was spent on the intro cut scene, and making it run smoothly. I had to really squeeze in final levels due to the time left.

The Biggest Problem

How it worked out…

The most obvious flaw in the game is possessing sages. I made a mistake by not realizing the ridiculousness of using a single ray-cast in front of the player to check for any sage (combined with the top down controls, it was frustrating for most players). However, I’m keeping the game like this until I release a post-jam version in the next week or two.

Other than frustrating ray-casting and short windows to possess certain sages, I felt the game turned out solid and complete. The AI was much better and simpler than my first attempt at AI and I’m proud of the game’s puzzles. ☺

What I learned…

First, I must try to have time left over for someone to play test the game. Also, I’ll try to keep less on my plate until I get a better feeling of how long things will take. This has been my best jam experience from the looks of it. It was nice to participate in this Ludum Dare, since my last one was a whole year ago. Since then, I’ve been making a big project (that’s been going great) and developing it prepared me for any theme that was thrown at me.

If you would like to play and rate the game, here’s the link!

October Challenge: Bionic 1.0.0 Alpha

Hello devs,

I posted here about the alpha version of my game, Bionic, a couple weeks back (and this is not an accidental post like a couple nights ago). The game is a multiplayer fps, and I’ve spent time on my own putting it together over the past year or so. My deadline is today, so here are links to my precious game (that you can check out for free):

I’ve entered it in the October Challenge… hopefully I can earn $1! ☺

There’s bound to be many problems related to networking… so please tolerate any inconvenience for now. I will continue to add to the game in the afternoon, when I am not busy.

Find me on Twitter and Facebook and expect an event to play with me this weekend. Thanks for reading, enjoy!

LD34

I’m In Ludum Dare 34!

It appears that I’ll be participating in my third Ludum Dare this weekend, first time in the 48 compo! I will be busy most of Friday night but I think I’ll still try to enter in the competition this time around. Since my time frame is much smaller, the game should be a bit more basic than my previous entries. After working on Bionic since October, I am immensely excited to make a fresh game!

I will be using various tools:

Engine: Unity

Language: C#

Graphics: Blender, Gimp, Photoshop

Audio: LMMS, Audacity, SFXR

ld34

Something I will do is create a time lapse of the development, like I did in LD33. I hope you stay up to date @PowerSparkGames during development, thanks for reading!

After having trouble with choosing something related to “Growing” I decided to get the two button part down. There’s just the player (blue) and the enemies (red)!

Nice visuals at least! Looking forward to seeing it!

Progress Post, Before I Sleep

Progress on my unnamed, barely planned out game! I’m slowly substituting the placeholder art for the real stuff. While it’s missing a few things, I’m calling it a day(or night) well spent.

See you all tomorrow and thanks for reading! ☺
