LD 41

I'm in again! Obviously.

Goes without saying that I'll be joining again.

Doing more VR stuff! Always do VR stuff now. It's good.

Cardey it out there now!

Unityem2018-04-23/em21-41-15.png

Did it! Released the thing! :D

It's a VR game that runs on SteamVR, you need a VR headset with motion controllers to play it.

LD 42

I'm in again!

Unbroken participation chain since LD29, still going! :)

Doing VR again like many of my previous entries, looking forward to experimenting with Knuckles EV2 controllers but also keeping stuff compatible with other more simple VR controllers/headsets.

SteamVR/Unity/Maya LT like always. :D

Also doing the 72 hour Jam like always.

LD 43

In again this time, like always! :)

And like my previous..... 9? entries, I'll be doing VR again!

I'm gonna keep pushing for VR entries folks, it's here to stay and needs more people experimenting!

See you next week, and good luck!

Tools of the trade as usual: Unity/MayaLT/SteamVR

At minimum support Vive wands, and Knuckles EV3 controllers. More bindings possibly set up by other people.

Ludum Dare 49

I'm only about 5 votes away! Anyone with a VR headset- please check out my game.

Hey folks, I understand that doing a VR entry means you don't get a whole lot of votes right off the bat but I've gotten the required amount in previous jams before so I'm really hoping to get there again this time as I'm rather happy with my entry which doesn't always happen haha.

Please give Nailey a try if you have a VR headset laying around.

Ludum Dare 50

Published my 16th VR-Only Ludum Dare entry last night! :)

Unityem2022-04-04/em21-47-13.png

Herdey is a fluffball herding game, scavenge items around the yard (in the shed) to try and keep the fluffballs from inevitably escaping!

This game should work with any SteamVR compatible VR headset.

I ported a couple Compo entries into VR!

This is something I've been doing on and off for a couple Ludum Dares now but I haven't ever really found as many to port as this jam for some reason haha.

All of these ports are done using UnityXR with OpenXR as the main driver, which supports SteamVR as well as Oculus directly and WMR headsets.

First up, "Volcano" (https://github.com/ShadowBrian/LDJAM50/releases)

https://youtu.be/JdK_eoHzCn8

Volcano was probably the most involved to port, I reworked the hand graphics a bit to make them work as individual hands for VR, and I had to offset the player's push location and collider to the local VR user's head offset. Took about 2 hours.

"Hospital Dash" (Direct link to build: https://puu.sh/ITzjP/430ea699a9.rar)

https://youtu.be/99x3iVB4SMM

This one was pretty simple, just remapped the controls to the VR controllers and ended up scaling the player up a bunch so they got an overview of the map, a bit like driving a little RC ambulance around, pretty fun. Took about 30 minutes.

"Reactor Guy" (https://github.com/ShadowBrian/LD50/releases/tag/VR-port)

https://youtu.be/E30UVXTFch8

This one was a bit tricky but mostly went alright, just had to make sure the mouse raycasts came from either controller instead of the camera/mouse, not too hard, and it translated into VR really well. Took about 2 hours.

"AGAIN! AGAIN!" (Direct link to build: https://puu.sh/ITzkm/8cb900837e.rar)

https://youtu.be/uODS-QKBkQc

This one was really straightforward, just attach the gun to the tracked controllers, parent the UI to the cart and add a basic button shortcut for retry. Took ~30 minutes.

This has been tons of fun to do, I might continue to browse through compo entries and find more games with source code that'll make for decent VR games.

Only requirement for me is that it is a game that was made in Unity as it's the engine I know best, so it makes for a much easier time porting.

While you're here, assuming you have some VR hardware, be sure to check out my entry Herdey as I still need a couple more ratings!

Edit: I just ported one more:

"Chess?" (Direct link to build: https://puu.sh/ITSe3/0865180982.rar)

https://youtu.be/ADyKpSr6Tu8

A little trickier but still only took ~2 hours to convert.

Ludum Dare 51

Flashey is out there! Also, VR conversions again!

header.png Another jam, another VR-only entry from me!

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/51/flashey-vr-only

https://youtu.be/VCuNh9W3HwQ

I've also resumed my practice of converting open source compo entries over into VR versions, first one up being "Yo, Listen!" because it caught my eye and looked like a fun little convert. :D

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FFVEignLbDg (more info on how to play that in the yt description)

I have a couple more entries on my todo list but if you've found any that would be cool in VR (and were made in Unity with the full project posted somewhere) let me know!

Ludum Dare 54

Fixey - I did another VR entry!

This marks my... idk like 20th? VR-only entry in a row!

It's always a struggle getting enough ratings, and I'm assuming a lot of my ratings aren't from people actually playing my games but instead using the playthroughs to estimate a rating...

I've been doing nothing but VR entries since early 2016 when I first got an HTC Vive headset, and I've noticed a decline in VR entries over the years since about late 2017 or so, it's weird, you'd think there would be MORE VR entries over time given the popularity of the Quest 2 but it appears not.

Anyway if you've got a headset, please check mine out, it runs on OpenXR so I made Quest, Pico and Vive standalone builds, as well as the standard PCVR build that can be run through SteamVR or just Oculus as OpenXR runtime, ideally for the standalone builds you use a headset with an XR2 chip inside because I have no clue how well this would run (if at all) on a Quest 1 for example.

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/54/fixey-vr-only

Here's a playthrough video my gf recorded on her Pico 4:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZkbIQXM1cQ

I may end up converting some open source entries into VR again like I've done in the past.

If you've got any good open source entries you've found that are made in Unity or Godot let me know and comment em, I'll give it a looksie!

(I still have to learn Godot a bit but I reckon it might be nice to start with someone's project for that)

Started doing VR conversions for this LD again!

Here's the first one: Gallery by @lettas

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ylUJ9QUb10

I've done this in the past- basically I'm converting interesting open source entries into VR ones to compensate for the low amount of VR entries haha.

If anyone's seen any more prime VR candidates please send em my way!

Also if you've got a VR headset check out my entry here https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/54/fixey-vr-only

Ludum Dare 55

Joining again, VR again

Never missed a Ludum Dare since ~LD28, don't intend to start now. Exclusively VR entries since 2016 :ok_hand:

Another VR game for the books!

Unity_zW28jtcJ6n.jpg

I had a lot of fun making this one. I hope I can get enough ratings!

ezgif-5-e487849679.gif

I'll probably see if I can get it running on standalones and put up an apk for Quest 2/3 users, no promises though... Don't actually have a quest myself.

Unity_TmOplJC1Sw.png

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/55/summoney-vr-only

Added Quest, XR Elite and Pico 4 builds of my VR entry! :)

Here's a little playthrough of it too if you don't have a VR headset laying around:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0lFDlEndpE

Still need all the ratings I can get, VR users are scarce so if you've got a headset, please give it a go!

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/55/summoney-vr-only

It has an OpenXR build for PC and separate standalone builds for the most popular headsets.

Summoney Art Postmortem

I did a basic couple art assets for this jam, figured I would show em off :) Here's the two summons I managed to scrounge together in the short time I had

Unity_1wRb2qgQl8.png

Just did basic box modelling and then a quick sculpt to define some muscle groups and shoved that into Substance Painter to get a nice enough normal bake out, they're sort of rushed and unoptimized but they worked well enough!

mayaemAmzGBCET4l.png maya/emEAPrLSmaqY.png

Then I did quick rigs + animations for them, the arms were driven by the user's own arms using IK so they look a bit basic in these animations haha.

ezgif-3-ec5f66bdb8.gif ezgif-3-4f0e44b774.gif

Here's a little book cover I drew up inside substance painter and a wand I threw together just to have something

UnityemLn4GVVtbte.png Unity/emN7Q8LLG5IQ.png

I also made a little button model real quick, it's super basic but it's rigged up so I can just move a bone down to make it "click"

Unity_7ta7K9uViq.png

The actual environment got the least time spent on it basically, used Substance Sampler to generate the textures and the level geometry was done using S&box's "Hammer", which is basically just regular Source 2 Hammer, made it quick to get some level geometry together with usable tiling UVs.

Unity_5uhj9qY0nO.png

And this is a VR-only game because I love VR and use every opportunity I get to write VR games where I can!

I've been doing exclusively VR entries since I got the original HTC Vive in 2016, these days I use a Valve Index but write using OpenXR so I can usually make standalone android ports for the various other headsets out there. (Like the Quest)

If you've got a VR headset, please give my game a go, I don't have enough ratings quite yet!

If you do not, I did put up a playthrough video so you can at least see what I was going for...

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/55/summoney-vr-only

Did not get a ranking!

chrome_2wmwPemELF.png

Wish folks would dust off their VR headsets a bit more...

There's no way only 15 of you folks have a Quest 2, they're like 200 bucks now!

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/55/summoney-vr-only

Ludum Dare 56

I did another VR entry!

Unity_nszxXRVyW5.png

If you've got the hardware for it, check it out here:

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/56/crittey-vr-only

If not, the game page does have a full playthrough video of it on there.

20241007232803_1.jpg

I'll be porting it to standalone VR later though I can't really guarantee performance as it is pretty hefty due to live navmesh regeneration being used a bunch.

Unity_tqEloeTv0a.png

Crittey now has native Quest and Pico support!

Unity_nszxXRVyW5.png

I always love putting up APKs for my entries whenever I can, and since I just got a Quest 3 recently this was a fun little project.

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/56/crittey-vr-only

The best way to play is still hooked up to a PC though, I had to tone down some visuals to get it running (mostly) 90fps...

On Pico 4 it runs a bit worse since it has essentially Quest 3 resolution running an XR2 Gen1 instead of Gen2...

Should be better on the Pico 4 Ultra.

20241007233201_1.jpg

Doing free VR ports for open source projects!

Think your entry is perfect for VR support?

Was it made in Unity?

I will fork it on github and implement VR for you!

This is something I try doing every jam whenever I have some extra time, I'll go over compo entries made in Unity that have their source code up on Github and fork the repo then add VR support to them.

It's mostly just finger practice, seeing if I can pull it off, usually it works out pretty well :)
