My first Ludum Game

Hey people!

I am relatively new and have been planning on participating in the August Jam. Being currently stuck in Florida, I’ve now also decided to try out the June MiniLD for practice. I’m making all the sounds and images (SFXR and Paint.NET). It’s going okay. In terms of actual coding, I sadly have only a crappy laptop with only the Java JDK 7 on it (not even Eclipse). While I normally work with LibGDX, I’m currently typing out an entire game in notepad with Java2D. It is quite a process. My theme is “It’s dangerous to go alone, take this”. Hopefully I can get done.

Not fancy, but it's functioning

Very simple graphics, but I like them.

Simple Screen Shot

I’m pretty busy this month, so I’m not quite sure if I’ll finish my game. I’m going to try anyways. I’m focusing mainly on graphics. Here’s my main menu so far. I’ve only developed for about two hours so far (most of it has been drawing in Paint.NET since I’m focusing on graphics).

(The three buttons have function as well)

More Progress

I literally have only worked a total of three hours so far, but my game is looking decent. Considering I’m not an artist. I’m rather pleased with my current prototype.

Red, white, and blue papers because America.

Mimi nina katika

I thought writing “I’m in” in Swahili would make my title more interesting.

Anyways, on to the tools:

-Framework: LibGDX

-Development Environment: Intellij IDEA

-Graphics: Paint.NET and Spriter

-Sound: Bfxr and Audacity

-Music: LMMS

i am also doing in libgdx… but very new to the framework.. in this jam i am learning and developing the game in libgdx, any tips for a newbie in libgdx…

Any Java programmers want to jam?

I was hoping to find a buddy or two for the upcoming jam simply because teams are more fun. I was planning to use the LibGDX framework for the game, but I am willing to use Slick2D or just vanilla Java.

Anyone interested?

Id be willing to do some vanilla java :}

I don’t know much about managing code in a team though.

Actually no. I usually use Steam chat to talk to people. I can easily make a Skype if you want. It’s pretty simple to do.

I’m willing, and I know libGDX, so I’m free to working in either that of vanilla Java. I may be only available the first 2 days of the jam, though.

Anyone good at mathematics?

I know some of you have degrees in Computer Science and have therefore taken advanced Mathematics. Hopefully one of you can help me solve this review problem.

Divide (3x^3+2x-10) by (x-4).

I want to figure it out before I start playing and rating other people’s games.

I got (3x^3-2)/(x-4)+2

I don’t think x-4 is a factor of 3x^3+2x-10

I could be wrong, but I got 3x^2+12x+50, with a remainder of 190. (it multiplies out to 3x^2+2x-200)

Post Moderm

So I participated in my first ever Ludum Dare last weekend. I had made two other games for the last mini Ludum Dares, but this was my first real jam on here.

I think the end result was rather good (game here). We were originally planning on using LibGDX, but a few events on the Friday of the jam made us have to resort to Java2D.

Things that went well:
-The game is functional and was made entirely within the time frame (including most of the engine).
-The only theme we didn’t think about beforehand ended up winning, but I think we came up with a good idea on the fly.
-The art went a lot better than I expected. The team consisted of only computer scientists.
-The mechanics are pretty solid.
-The body of the serpent has pretty good movement considering we had never coded something like it before.
-Recreational biting.
-Cory.

Things I wish I could have improved:
-There is no way to pause the game.
-The game immediately hops to the main menu when you die. There is not game over notification.
-The game does not have a ton of replay ability and becomes somewhat tedious in later rounds.
-There are slight bugs with the head of the serpent when he is at the top of the water.
-There is no music and the sound effects aren’t the best.

Ah well. Cheers to the next competition in December.

Help an Indie Developer

There’s an interesting guy on YouTube named Thin_Matrix. Over the past three years, he has been creating an indie MMO. Well, the day is finally here, and the game is on KickStarter.

For a pledge of just 25 euros, you get access to all his source code, which includes features like animations, particles, visual effects, shadows, and an entire 3D rendering pipeline. It’s a great learning opportunity. Moreover, for 30 euros you will get a Beta version of the game in addition to the code.

I thought both these deals were quite reasonable and might interest some of you guys.

Game looks awesome so far!

Problems making an account

Is anyone else having problems making a new account? I’d assume it’s a result of us changing websites soon, but I want to make sure it’s not something on my end.
