Ready and waiting!

Hello! Coinciding with the tenth anniversary and willing to test myself, I’ve decided to participate in LD… who knows what will come out of it, but risk is fun.

Programming: GML, with Game Maker 8
Graphics: Probably Game Maker too. If it’s an urgency, maybe Paint.NET
Sounds: BFXR
Music: Inudge.net

Working!

Yep, that is my dimensional-with colours-game-thing. Eventually improve. Patience.

The progress…

What has been done so far: * Basic mechanics. * Level elements: doors, levers, spikes, portals. * Six tutorial levels and two challenge. * Camera that follows the mouse for large levels.
What remains to be done. * More levels. The game will have thirty or forty approximately. * Level editor. * Music and sound effects. * Sprite animations. * Port to Game Maker Studio to market it. * HUGE SUCCESS. A photo of the actual state: And a photo of my desk!

Submitted!

Catch them all (in 10 seconds) is a thing now.

I’m not EXACTLY happy with the final result, BUT! it’s my first LD game completed, so I’m very happy with myself! 😀

I’ll do a post-mortem after the voting, so I can talk about the goods and the fails and the fun facts.

“Catch them all! (in 10 seconds)”: A Post Mortem

(You can try the game here!)

What was good:

The theme:
Simple and concise as it is, was unexpectedly easy to quickly find motivation and inspiration to get to work, and I think if this is my first game ended LD has been precisely because of the simplicity of the theme.

The idea:
I started to work six hours late, but I had a clear idea as soon as I read the topic. I will not say it’s the most original idea in the world, but it was an easy idea with possibilities, and possible to do in a short time.

What was wrong:

Bugs:
I have worked in platform games before, but had always depended on outside code when dealing with collisions and such matters, which has led to cause several somewhat annoying bugs in the game (one commenter informed me that sometimes enemies suddenly teleport: I couldn’t fix that in time, but I think it is related to the code that prevent enemies to spawn within a platform. I have intention to continue working on this game (I want to make an HTML5 version) , and will do my best to fix that.

The Movement:
Several people have told me that the character moves too slow and jumps too high. I disagree about the speed of movement, but I could have improved the jumps.

The level design:
I’m horrible at this.

What was amazing, good, great and other synonyms for awesome:

The response from the community:
I know I will not get into a good position, but I don’t care. Simply reading positive feedback about something I have done, knowing that someone is enjoying my work, is a great feeling.
And, finally, thanks to that I will be participating in the next LD!

It lives!

Arrived from the ends of some galaxy where stars have no logical positions!
From a world where spaceships are shaped like a submarine!
Where you can only use a button to try to save your life!
It comes to our screens …
“You only get one ship”!

(I’ll write a post-mortem during the voting period!)

“You Only Get One Ship” – A Post-Mortem

You can play it clicking in the image!

What went right
My ability to react:
Actually this was not the theme I expected (the ideal would have been “Death is useful”), but once I learned to adapt quickly to circumstances and had an acceptable idea after thinking for a few hours. From what I read on IRC, many people had no idea what to do until we were already in the final hours of the jam, so I think in that area I can consider myself lucky.

Simplicity:
Thanks to the simplicity of my idea I did not have to use several of the tools that I announced in my entry post.
This allowed me to save a lot of time and I could focus on the KISS principle.

Fun:
I think the game is pretty fun, or at least entertaining. It is challenging without being frustrating and can give you some minutes of fun. Not bad considering that the idea is pretty simple.

The community:
This time I was able to spend more time on IRC.
And you are fantastic. All of you.

What went bad:

Graphics:
THE SHIPS ARE FLYING SUBMARINES!

Graphics:
And are supposed to be spaceships!

Also graphics:
SPACESHIPS!

(Also, thank you, Twitch, for not saving my last two hours of streaming. Yeah, you’re stupid)

Easter egg!

Submission!

You can play “Beneath the… hey, look, shiny things!” here! Try to find all the “jewels” (blue squares) as fast as you can!

Also, can you find Marty, the skull?

(A post-mortem is in the way!)

You, you pulled off THAT lighting in flixel? *applauds*

Behind the… hey, look, shiny things! – Postmortem!

(If you haven’t played yet, you can play by clicking here!)

What went well:
The theme. Was among my favorites during voting, and was really easy to find an idea that seemed good.

The idea was born at 6 am on a day when I couldn’t sleep because of an annoying toothache. It doesn’t seem a good start, but that morning, ignoring the lack of sleep, I had a prototype ready.
Were left behind several things I wanted to add but could not because of time, but I still think I got to create something fun.

Flixel. This engine is wonderful. It allows you to do everything. (My original idea was to use HaxeFlixel, but it was impossible. See section “What went wrong” for details.)

What went wrong:

The engine. My original idea was to use HaxeFlixel. This was fine for the first two hours, until I discovered how stupidly complex it is to read objects in a TMX in Haxeflixel. What in Flixel is five lines of code, here became a hell in which I spend several hours, and it forced me to change to Flixel  in the middle of the competition.

Twitch. It no longer automatically saves your streamings unless you manually change an option that is relatively hidden, which led me to lose several hours of video when I was doing my streaming.

The art. Again.

The future:

I think the idea has a lot of potential if I polish it and add more items to make the game something worthy. Therefore, I have begun work on a second version (Behind the … Extended Edition!), with the aim putting it in FlashGameLicense to auction as soon as it is finished.
You will have news about it …
