LD22

My first Ludum Dare

Hello! I am going to give this competition a try.

I’ll be using Unity 3D for the game development, various photo-editing programs for textures, Anim8or for modeling, and LithUnwrap for UV mapping… if needed.

Good luck to everyone. 😉

LD22, Night 1 – Progress is progress

Took me a couple of hours to get my idea straight, but I got to work at 9:30PM and didn’t stop until right now (2:25AM) since I need to go to bed, heh.

Got the main gameplay working. Some modeling done, and basic ideas thought-out.

Tomorrow is the day to really get the game going, add everything that goes into the game, and get it all working. Sunday, of course, will be the day I add the finishing touches and release it. Hope I can make it in time!

Here is a screenshot (that doesn’t show much) showing the status of Night 1’s work. About 4 hours nonstop. I took some breaks to eat and stretch, etc.

Have fun, everyone! And godspeed on each of your projects.

A good start! I’m sure if you keep it up you’ll finish it in time.

I’m not going to finish (or make the deadline even if I tried)

Way behind on everything. Lots of problems and bugs. I am new to coding and thought this might be a good motivation booster.

It was! I worked nonstop for hours, and anytime I ran into a problem I would normally dread and quit working for days, I tackled it and fixed it. (Until they all piled up and the deadline was 4 hours away)

Anyway, I am very motivated to keep learning Javascript and keep using Unity, and hopefully make some games over the next 4 months. Annnd of course I will be much more prepared next Ludum Dare! LD23, here I come… in 4 months. 😉

I did make up a little demo for everyone to play, if they care.

Not hardly finished at all, plenty of bugs, and just ugly all around. I did plan on going somewhere with this but it was just not happening… not now, at least.

The game was going to be like this:

You’re flying through space in your super awesome space ship, and then you crash! On some deserted space station in the middle of nowhere. Luckily you hit the escape pod and now you’re in your robot-like pod. Your ship is on the complete other side of the station. You have to get through the station and get back in your ship.

The “space station people” who used to work here were much bigger than you so that’s why the proportions look so crazy. I had plans, I really did… buuut as I’ve already said. I bit off a bit more than I could chew at the moment. 😛

So here’s the demo.

Controls:

Move: W, A, S, D, Space jumps.

Lights: Left shift turns them off, “C” turns them on. (I was just too in-experienced to make a toggle function. One of the lower priority things. Haha)

Doors: Left ALT opens, “Z” closes them. (Very buggy, there were of course going to be triggers/keys, but I didn’t get that far and so I just gave you a way to get through them)

Annd “X” does something special… if you get there, you’ll need it to get to where your (non-existent,  because I didn’t put it in there :P) ship is.

Also, one of the doors does not open or close. That is intentional. It was supposed to be locked. There is an alternate route…

Alone in Space

I am looking forward to playing all the other (finished) games! And good luck to everyone, for LD22, and LD 23, in 4 months. 😉

Oh man I was hoping to play your game, the link is dead too I think, it says something about “webpage under review”. The next LD will be even better, so don’t give up! 😀

LD23

I’m in! Second LD48, didn’t finish last time

Hey, all. I just wasn’t ready for LD22. Tried way too much for what little I knew. This time I’m prepared and ready to take it on. I’ll probably try a quick warmup game before next weekend, too.

What I’ll be using:

Programming: Unity 3D – Javascript

Sounds: sfxr & random other things

Graphics: PhotoFiltre & PhotoShop

Modeling: Anim8or

Taylor Swift, Rush, Muse, La Roux, in the background to keep me going. 😀

If I stream it will be here: http://www.twitch.tv/captainicy (Might stream, might not. I’ll have to see)

It’s shaping up to be another awesome Ludum Dare, so good luck to everyone out there, and have fun. 😀

Here we go!

Time to get rolling. Tiny World, huh? I was hoping for Artificial Life,  but this works fine as well. It won’t limit me at all. I really didn’t want Randomly Generated because that is something I know next to nothing about. So as long as it’s not that then everything’s good! :)

I’m using Unity w/Java-UnityScript, PhotoFiltre, PhotoShop, etc…

Not really using any pre-done libraries, I may borrow small code examples from some of my other various projects, but I won’t do anything that will give me an advantage.

Good luck, everyone! This theme opens up plenty of possibilities.

End of Night 1: Got the idea, basic gameplay

Welp, initially I was gonna go for a “you’re a little computer part that’s been dislodged from the motherboard and you have to find your way back through the various chips and stuff till you get back to your rightful place. The End” but I just hadn’t prepared myself for that type of game.

Second idea was a simplistic racing game where you were little bacteria racing around things like water bottle caps, inside crackers, etc. That started to work for a while but eventually I gave up. Now, 8 hours into the comp I have a firm idea in place and basic gameplay to go with it. Not going to be very complex so I think I can finish this if I just work at it. I’ve already learned so much just tonight. It’s amazing what a little motivation does.

So yeah, the actual game I’m going for here is you’re a little “spark” within these various tiny wires and you have to electrify the various wires inside this wire because some parts of them are dead……. or some such stuff etc etc… yeah. Not very… awesome, but at least it’s creative! :)

Tonight I got the basics implemented, tomorrow I will get everything working, materials, textures, all the features, hopefully a complete level.

Then of course Sunday morning/afternoon I get sounds, menus, polish it all up and boom! We’re done… I hope. 😉

Screenshot from the end of night 1!

 (Click for full size ;))

Been non-stop-Nyaning for music. I had been Muse, U2, Taylor Swift-ing, but things started getting frustrating so I went to something… er… different. 😉

http://nyan.cat/jazz.html < Link for those curious. Pick the one you like. Jazz is my favorite.

Anyway, long post is long. I hope everything is going smoothly for everyone else. Let’s get to 1,000 entries this time!

Looking at the progress reports of other people, things are looking good. A lot of these games look very promising. Anxious to see what the famous guys of the Indie scene are doing too, though.

Back in a few hours! See you then.

Back up, things are starting to shape up. :D

Got up about an hour ago, dunno why I slept so long but whatever. I’ve got 23½ hours left if I sleep 8 more hours before 8PM Sunday.

Bring it on. 😉

Anyway, I’ve already made a bit of progress. I’m motivated!

24 Hours In – Progress Report

So, we’re into the final 24 hours…

I have made a LOT of progress tonight. I think my total time developing my game so far is around 13 hours, and for that, I’ve done very well. Only a few major gameplay features to finish up tonight, and I have about 6 hours before sleep time again, so I can definitely finish up the gameplay tonight.

Tomorrow I polish it all up, add sounds (if at all possible) and submit! :)

Obligatory screenshot. 😉

Gotta get rid of that silly cyan cube, of course, but that is the placeholder for the main “character”, which I am still working on.

That level design is not final either, still tweaking it.

This game isn’t going to be very spectacular, but at least it’s another entry towards 1,000 and I am learning so much making this game. I’ll be insanely happy if I just get to finish it, regardless of the quality of the game. 😀

Good luck to everyone else out there, you probably need it. 😉

2AM Update

My game is almost fully functional! Once again, not really trying to impress with this game, but I was going for something I could actually finish, and finish it I will. 😀

I have learned so much already, and it’s only been 30 hours. :)

Gonna go sleep in a couple of hours. I’m still in my coding mode so I won’t stop now. Got a few things to finish up tonight then it’s off to sleep for about 8 hours, I hope I don’t oversleep.

Anyway, tomorrow I will add sounds hopefully, polish it up, work out the only like… 2 bugs the game has, and submit it!

Hope everyone else is doing well right now. Let’s see those 1,000 entries. 😉

Off to bed! 15 and a half hours remain…

Alrighty, let’s hope I don’t sleep any more than 7 hours. 😮

Things have REALLY worked out well today. I came so close to giving up on multiple occasions but I just kept on going. Everyone else considering quitting should do the same. You can get through the bugs/problems or the complete lack of ideas, you really can. Just work at it.

Nearly got this thing finished. I’d like to post a WIP of it since it can easily be played in the Unity Web Player, but I’ve really got to go, and it’d be really confusing to people just taking a look anyway.

Tomorrow comes the polish, finalizing of the menu, polishing the design for the one endless level  in this game, hopefully some very simple sounds just to let you understand what you’re doing, and then I submit it! 😀

I am so happy I’ve gotten this far. Last time on Sunday morning I threw in the towel, but that is NOT going to happen this morning. No, sir. I have learned so much already. LD23 has really helped me get better with Unity, and I was already pretty good.

Good luck to all you people out there still working hard at the moment, and good luck on finishing whatever it is you’re making!

I cannot wait to finish my game so I can actually try out other people’s games. Some of these WIPs I see (and even some finished games already submitted) look really fun and creative! Can’t wait to try them out.

See you in a few hours! 😉

LD24

I’m in! (3rd time!)

This is going to be a great experience for me again. LD23 was one of the best times I’ve ever had. I can’t wait to see the theme announced and get to work… those first few hours are always the hardest, but in the end they are the most important. 😉

I suggested some themes. One I would personally love to see would be “Weather”. It’d be really interesting to see what people could come up with for that idea.

Anyway, I’m in, of course. Maybe I’ll even make an “I’m in” video this year or something like that.

Tools I will most likely be using…

• Coding/developing

Unity 3D

• Graphics

Anim8or

Blender

PhotoFiltre

PhotoShop

• Sound

Bfxr

Various music generation software

• Motivation

Taylor Swift

U2

Muse

Hans Zimmer

😀

Good luck to everyone! And remember, we have a huge number of entries to beat this time. 2,000, anyone? Remember, if you give up early that’s one less entry! Just think if we tied LD23’s record and that was it. Wouldn’t you feel like you should’ve finished your game?

That’s what I used to motivate myself last time. :)

I may livestream and if I do, I will be sure to post a link before I start.

I’ll also be keeping up to date on Twitter and on the main LD site, of course.

19 hours in, 9 hours of real work, this is what I have!

Progress is going very well! My concept for the theme is very simple, but hey, simplicity is good. I’m going for a kinda “candy-land” (or Pyroland for those of you who are familiar with Team Fortress 2) art style, and it’s coming along nicely. Still very early, of course, but I’m making a lot of progress very fast! :)

Good luck to all my fellow game devs. Keep going and never give up! Oh, and don’t forget to plant a kitten in your game. 😀

Also, obligatory food picture post coming soon when I finally get my (way overdue, I might add) lunch. 😛

Quick Rules Question

I want to sneak a kitten in my game and have an awesome idea. I was going to put a Nyan cat in there, using the original graphic and just let it fly by… is that violating the rules of me having to have created all content in these 48 hours?

Thanks 😀

Less than six hours left… officially in ohcrap mode.

Still have to polish my game off and create/add sounds, menu, and a score system. This is easy!! If not for the sounds part…

But alas, this is ohcrapohcrapohcrap mode. I shouldn’t even be pausing to write this post.

I am in exactly the same situation. I haven’t even finished off the main game logic yet!

Well, I did it again. :)

Completed another game for another Ludum Dare. Yay! Okay, so it isn’t exactly completely complete, but close to it. The same thing that usually happens happened again… as usual, but oh well. Just took too long and let things get out of hand Sunday afternoon, so I had to rush things out, such as sounds/polish, to meet the deadline.

My game has some bugs, a possibly game-breaking problem, and the graphics/gameplay aren’t quite as polished as I had intended. Also the annoying, simplistic music is something I had really wanted to avoid this time around. Thought I would have time to compose a little something myself instead of using the same music generator I used last time, but alas, that didn’t happen either. Each LD I learn what to do/not to do. I was a lot more organized this time as opposed to LD23. I made a lot of mistakes last time and I barely made any during LD24. Still made some, though, and I will only improve next time. :)

I plan on touching it up over the week and releasing a new, enhanced, post-LD version for people to play. It should be much better and a better representation of what I had in mind.

Anyway, if you want to play it, go here. I would appreciate ratings and comments. I always love hearing from other people and it helps me to understand what I need to improve upon. Thanks, and I hope everyone had a great time. I know I did!!

And for those of you still working on your games for the Jam, good luck and never give up!

LD25

I forgot to say… Of course I’m in!

This will be my fourth Ludum Dare. It’s going to be great. I’ve finished my game the last two times. My first LD was this time last year in which I had no clue what I was doing and failed miserably. After that, April and August were great times for me. I expect this one to be just as awesome.

My game will probably be in 2.5D, depending on the theme. It’s easier to make a quick game that way. Also, simplicity is always best to meet the 48 hour deadline! But that doesn’t mean the games can’t seem complex!

Tools

Unity

Anim8or, LithUnwrap

PhotoShop, PhotoFiltre

sfxr

Whatever I can come up with for music.. maybe my game won’t even need music, depending on the final theme.

OneRepublic, Relient K, Taylor Swift, Rush, and U2 will power my motivation throughout the weekend.

Have a great time, everyone! And remember, never give up if you can help it at all!

After 7 hours of work, here’s a demo to play! Also.. going to sleep for a bit

Before I get a little rest (as usual), I thought I’d share a screenshot and a demo build of my game. I am LOVING this theme. I could’ve done anything, but I chose something fairly simple and to the point.

I said I’d never do randomly generated levels ever again, but here I go again! :)

Link to demo! Please tell me what you think of it. Very early still, but I’m extremely satisfied with what I’ve got so far.

 http://dl.dropbox.com/u/51004934/LD25/Webb01.html

(Basic controls for now are: Left Mouse to shoot, move mouse to aim. No other controls at the moment. Later there will be a boost button, ramps, random background stuff, and a lot of the placeholders will be gone. (Those signs and the look of the character’s vehicle atm will be drastically changed for the final game)

Some screenshots too

This was my original concept drawing. Hopefully you can get the idea of the game from this without me telling you!
