First time in for the Jam!

With my friend Jan, we will be participating in Ludum Dare for the first time. I am responsible of the graphics and he is programming. We are planning to work from 9 AM to 5 PM for three days starting from Saturday morning. You will be able to watch our development process live at my Twitch channel here. Theme is not chosen yet but these are what we decided on:

Unity 3D as the game engine

C# as the programming language

Hand drawn vector art and animations for the graphics

Mobile or PC as the platform (if mobile also a Web version)

We are developing games for almost a year together and hoping to produce something awesome for this Ludum Dare.

Development Stream is On!

We decided on the concept and genre of the game. It will be a space exploration game with micro management and a storyline! Right now we are focusing on the exploration part. Movement and  space, planets etc.

Later there will be;

– Material gathering (mining)

– Fighting with other AI ships

– Buy/Sell

– Upgrade ship

– Bounty hunting

Interface Upgrade & Mining

We finish for today after getting 2 interface tabs and mining laser done. A lot of work done for only 1 day so I’m happy :)

More Assets and Dinner Break

We have managed to finish some more assets. There is a force field in front of space station entrance which limits your movement now. Camera shakes when you speed up. We are also debugging movement of camera. Next step will be adding a minimap.

More Interface, Mining Planets and so on

We struggled a lot with Unity 4.6’s new interface system and we still don’t know how it exactly works. However graphically interface is getting more and more advanced. We have minimap icons and cursor as new graphics and already done pieces are already in the game. You can mine planets till you fill your cargo completely or planets run out of minerals. You cannot mine when you’re too fast in speed. You can also dock into the station and access your upgrades and store.

Federation Market, Scanning & Interface

These are implemented or done:

– Scanning the area by radar (upgradable) and showing the materials on planets
– Minimap icons, icons of planets according to the materials on them
– Docking to home station and being able to open station menu window
– Spaceship stats show on screen, fuel gets consumed, cargo gets full, materials get gathered
– Zooming by scrolling middle mouse button
– Federation market station for shopping purposes

After a good night’s sleep, tomorrow, we will go on with the list we made. Some of the crucial things are;

– Making the station window fully interactive, material management, selling materials, upgrading the ship
– A federation newspaper that includes the story. The story will affect the space market.
– Federation fuel station, buying fuel
– Buying materials and spaceship parts in federation market station
– At least 5-6 more planets
– A complete world map that can be toggled
– Moving at light speed
– Explosive material that reacts to heavy damage on ship when carried
– Remaining weapon upgrades (laserguns are already done) and shooting
– Security for federation stations (if you are caught with illegal material on you or if you attack them)

By this point the game will be playable but there are also extra stuff we are planning to add if we can manage to finish these;

– Cargo ships that move from market to market and that you can shop on if you dock
– Other merchants with their own stations moving around
– Pirates (enemy AI and combat)

– Asteroids with random color tone, velocity, angular velocity and spawning location, mining asteroids
– Federation newspaper (unfunctioning for now)

Today we are going on with the list we made. Some of the crucial things are;

– Store transactions after docking at station
– A federation newspaper that includes the story. The story will affect the space market.
– Buying materials and spaceship parts in federation market station
– At least 4-5 more planets
– Functioning federation newspaper with random issue per day
– Security for federation stations (if you are caught with illegal material on you or if you attack them)

By this point the game will be playable but there are also extra stuff we are planning to add if we can manage to finish these;

– Cargo ships that move from market to market and that you can shop on if you dock
– Other merchants with their own stations moving around
– Pirates (enemy AI and combat)

Space Delver – Almost There

We are submitting our game in a second but it is not finished. It is playable though.
We enjoyed developing it and learned&practiced a lot except these last few sleepless hours. It was a little bit painful :)
I’m putting the graphics which are not in the game. We want to go on working on it later and implement all the features we planned to do so. Hope you enjoy the game. We are going to rest now till we come back and try to play and rate as many of your games as possible.

Our Delve-lopment Blog

Space Delver is a game where you play as a space merchant. It’s a game of space exploration, advancement and micromanagement spiced up with a little bit of story.

What can you do in the game?
– Fly around as much as you can with the amount of fuel you have.
– Gather resources from asteroids and planets by using your mining laser.
– Land on planets, explore the planet, communicate with many different races living on them.
– Trade on your home station, on cargo ships, on federation space stations, on other merchant’s space stations and on planets .
– Upgrade your ship to be better at controlling your ship, mining, defending your ship against pirate attacks, increasing your cargo capacity and so on.
– Call for help if you run out of fuel, only by taking the risk of getting the attention of a pirate ship. If you run out of money and fuel together, the game is over for you.
– Follow the federation news, actively participate in events happening around galaxy or use business opportunities wisely.
– Choose the hard way for earning a lot, hunt bounties with your merchant ship.
– Travel to other solar systems with your warp drive or a warp gate, discover new resources hidden in the depths of space.
– Buy new ships, enlarge your station hangar.

We’re in and working for 3 hours

We’re in and got started with discussing the idea for unconventional weapon. Our protagonist will be children fighting against evil monsters with teddy bears, pillows etc. It will be a multi-player coop game with one server serving all the players. There will be ~70 degrees angle camera from top. Cartoon-like 3D graphics with fantasy environment.

We’ll be using Unity, C#, Photoshop, ZBrush, Modo and Blender.

We’ve some particles already for blood and portals!
