Entering the contest :D

First time, have been coding for a few years now and I’m only in highschool but I want to take my coding abilities to the test and see what I can really do. Also, if I manage to win this, this could definitely be something to put on a resume in the future 😛

Coding: I will be using either Java or XNA/C#

Graphics: May be paint or may be photoshop, really depends on the theme.

Sound: I will probably just record my voice and edit it using Audacity

Hooray for high schoolers!

Thanks man! I really just want something to show me how good I really am at coding, if I can create a game at equal quality than most others entering this contest that’s all I’ll really be looking for.

10 second idea

Already a WIP; but a game that’s a hybrid of, hedgehog launch or burrito bison and topspeed dragster; you have 10 seconds to get to the end and after every run you get money to upgrade or buy a new car.

Using Java and paint.net, not sure what I’m going to use for sound yet lol

My I guess you could say *racing* game, you aren’t racing anybody but it’s a burrito bison/hedgehog launch styled game where you progress by continuously trying to meat your goal. All of the core components are done(Other than the end, don’t try to beat it yet lol) use D to accelerate, you can’t accelerate after 10 seconds, W and S to move up and down, hit the yellow boxes to give yourself about 1 second of no deceleration, shift or spacebar is used for your nitrous.

That sounds like a pretty cool take on the ‘launcher’ style of games. It’ll be refreshing to play one that isn’t just throwing some random object through the air!

More graphical and gameplay progress

So these are some new screenshots of my progress, it’s my time for bed post 😀 If you do play it the download link is down below and you use WASD for acceleration and movement, shift for NOS, enter for next drive after shop, the timer doesn’t start until you start driving (with D) and the timer is what allows you to accelerate; it’s almost like a boost or head start towards your 250000 unit goal. Also, I’m afraid I haven’t made it playable on monitors with a resolution less than 1600×1080. Nothing happens when you reach your goal yet, I’ll prrobably add some sort of cut scene and there is no sound yet, that is for tomorrow.

I need a suggestion on the audio of my game

I’m making somewhat of a racing game, but I can’t get any decent tile-able car audio to continue to playback while you are driving, so should I just leave out audio and save you from the disgusting sounds and just take the 0 or should I put in the pretty awful sounds and risk users losing from the gameplay because the audio is just attacking them? Please reply this could be somewhat of a game-changer if I make the wrong decision.

I’d give the audio a try, if they don’t like it, mute exists. Good Luck

Yeah make a mute option.

LD28

I’m in

I did LD #27 and ended up with #666 in Fun, pretty ironic, but this year rather than Java I will be using XNA

Graphics – Paint.Net

Audio – Recording sounds IRL using my iPhone or something, and then editing with Audacity

LD29

Limited time LD for me

Prom is next week, so I will only be able to work on it from when it’s announced Friday, and likely all of Sunday, but I am in nonetheless

I have maybe half a day to make a game, let’s do this!!

I have a track meet at 8am tomorrow and prom after that, then I might be doing something with the group I’m going to prom with that night. So I will have like, 8pm – maybe 1am tonight and most of the day Sunday. I don’t think I’m going to make top 30% this time.

LD30

I’m in!

This will be my 3rd time entering the Ludum Dare, would be my 4th but last LD was during prom.

Depending on the theme, I’ll either use Unity3D, XNA, or Java with Eclipse.

For art I’ll probably just use MSPaint

My sound effects are quite phenomenal, all of them are made with my mouth.

I need a suggestion…

I’ve been stuck on the same bug for 4 hours. Not an exaggeration. I’ve been programming for 5 years and have never ran into a problem this big. I already tried recoding it from scratch and the main issue is the part of the game it breaks is the MAIN part of the game, do I risk never fixing this really obnoxious bug or should I just try and sway my project in another direction?

What’s the bug?

Work on something else, or go take a walk, and come back to it…

Themed disasters and penta kills

While adding little “Minigames” to my sort of sit back and watch simulator, I realized one of the names of the disasters I subconsciously came up with was Sandstorm. Need I say any more?

I won’t be posting my game

It’s just too incomplete, this was my very first time attempting to create a strategy game and balancing everything out is an absolute nightmare and I just couldn’t do it to where it felt like a game. It just feels like an incomplete simulator with no pleasing graphics and no sound at all. Overall I just wasn’t inspired by the theme, it was my least favorite in the final round and frankly I don’t see how it got +500 compared to every other theme that got <0, but I’ll definitely see you all next ludum dare. Good luck in the voting periods!

LD31

Of course I’m in!

This LD I think I’m going to use Unity and maybe try and fit in my new ability to use Photon (Multiplayer games) into it as well, I’m not dead set on that though. I’m still not familiar with 3d modeling programs so I’d have to keep it simple but still make it look good. That’ll be a challenge using cubes spheres and capsules lol. Other than that, sounds will likely be made from my mouth (typical) and I’ll be flyin solo as always

Making a multiplayer game

I started coding right off the bat, but just now feel confident enough that I will actually finish it. Was really iffy with photon for about 2 hours when I couldn’t find a solution to my problem anywhere but finally got it fixed and now, here’s my progress 😀  Not the most descriptive images, but they’re from a timelapse at a 1 minute interval. Essentially it’s a “whose who is who’s” type thing where you have to identify all of your little enemies based on ways they act around you and not other people in your game, and the first person to identify all 10 of theirs wins.  screen_1417875585.24 screen_1417875950.28 screen_1417875767.76 screen_1417859158.33

Sorry I forgot to alert everyone I was in! Here’s some screenshots to make up for it

My game is currently called “Hallway Hero”, you play a student who excels in creating paper airplanes, setting up traps to avoid ambushes, and overall being the best bully in the school! You throw paper airplanes at your enemies (Other students) and may run into some colored construction paper for powered planes, such as red construction paper being an explosive airplane. Watch out for teachers though! If they see you in the act, you will earn demerits based on your offense and lose at 100 demerits. This game is still very much a work in progress and features are being added by the hour!

The first picture show off the minimap, your character, and some of the classrooms, the second picture shows off the current map, all dark gray blobs are classrooms I need to implement, the 3rd picture shows the enemy on screen and you shooting a paper airplane! Most images are currently placeholders.

Progress Screenshots

Showing off some paper airplanes, some closed and opened classrooms (They open randomly, loot for more paper airplane ammo), some enemies shooting spitballs, the minimap, and the throwing airplane indicator

TEACHERS GALORE

screen_1429430634.46 - Copy

What can I say, my school employs a lot of teachers!

Finally finished placing classrooms

screen_1429441332.23

Doesn’t look like much but in game the classes randomly open, I just have to create different images for each class, or scale them better.

Quick question

If I just supply all files where my unity exe built to, which includes all of my assets and scripts and such, is that enough for source code? Copying and pasting was obnoxious last time
