I’m in!

I was dissappointed that I couldn’t participate on the Global Game Jam a few months ago, and this is my first game jam ever. I have also heard from some indie developers that often organize internal jams, even though they are undergoing the pressure of the development of another game; that makes me think it’s really worth doing and exciting!

Tools:

Graphics – Photoshop, Maya

Engines – Unity, Flash

I’ve told a couple friends and it is their first game jam ever as well, so we expect to undergo a lot of doubts and pressure, nothing that can’t be dealt with :) I have done several games in the past in one month periods, and it’s already a lot of pressure, its very interesting how things will turn out!

Runaway with cement

Cement can stop pursuers, but it needs to dry really quickly. Cement thrower could be P1 and drier P2. Might end up dumping the second player mechanic for the jam.concrete escape

Concrete Escape – Simple but fun

Together with garnanpacheco we achieved to make a fun game that can keep you entertained for several minutes. I was afraid we would just get negative feedback because of the jaggy physics, but in the last two days we managed to put together everything that, according to the comments so far, makes our game interesting to play.

At first I was afraid of going too crazy on the concept and that it would become unfeasable for our developing skills. Plus, it’s the first game that garnanpacheco has ever made on Unity, but he learned the tools really quickly and his previous programming skills were a huge help.

Pros:

  • Core mechanics were put together in time.
  • Controls haven’t seemed hard to understand.
  • Some time was set aside to try exporting to the most platforms possible.
  • We got enough sleep and stayed focused.

Cons:

  • Physics are not polished enough.
  • The difficulty ramp is too steep.
  • Did not have time to improve the aesthetics.
  • Did not polish the HUD very much.

Concrete Escape – Issues with Mac Users

Hey jammers! I have been told that the Mac version of my game wasn’t working because I didn’t package it properly. As I am not a Mac user, I am not familiar with the .app builds.

So close…

After an hour of trying to solve the final level in Chris M’s Avenging My Gran, the Famed Botanist, the solution seemed to be there at last. But… oh-oh, little mistake. So frustrating, yet so catching that it encourages you to solve it to the very end.

so close yet so far

A great recommendation for those who love brain teasers. Good job, Chris M!

I did it for you, gran! :'(

Thanks for the plug Davikin! I’ve been doing some hand-wringing about that last level, so very pleased you saw it through to the end :)

TerminAnt: a nostalgia trip to the 90s

Feedback has arrived about our entry, Terminant, having a 90s look and feel. If you want to take a ride to the N64 and PSX times (probably your childhood or teens), you should check it out here  :

Close to the 20 ratings!

We the guys of the TerminAnt team have played and rated a lot of your games, but our visibility is still low . We are 5 ratings away from the 20 needed to get a score. It would be really helpful to know how much we must polish our game and our skills

Help TerminAnt reach 20 ratings! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/terminant https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEMQ16uVA

20 rankings reached, some advice and still some more "play my game" :D

Not really cheerful news but TerminAnt finally has a score thanks to the amount of feedback you guys have given. There are a ton other participants that haven't seen it at all. So I'm leaving the link again: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/terminant

This is my last post for this Ludum Dare edition and I would like to share some advice with you, either you are a newcomer or not.

---1. Prepare your tools ahead of time--- Make sure all your team has the software and pre-production tools (even if it's just paper and pencils) they need before the start of the event. We struggled a little at the beginning to get the graphic assets done because some of the team members did not have Photoshop or Illustrator in their laptops.

---2. Think out of the box--- I know this phrase is getting old these days, but every time a game jam (or any other creative project) comes on, at the first moments everyone has pretty much the same ideas, which explains why in this edition many people came up with games about small planets and ants (I include myself in the latter). You get far more theme points when your game conveys the theme with the least obvious solutions.

---3.Food--- I read a post where a team said they had filled their fridge so they would get no problems when it came to feeding during the event, and at some point I thought "gee, we should have done that too"; because many of us started arguing with our bellies and having creative blocks

Also, feel free to leave the link to your game in this post's comments. I'll try to play and give feedback to as many games I can until Friday

See you in August!
