Ludum Dare as a Learning Experience

This is my first attempt at the Ludum Dare compo!

I’ve decided to use this opportunity to not only have fun, but learn about Unreal 4 as well; I’ve just subscribed to it, and I’m interested in using it!

Ordinarily I’d use Unity or roll my own engine, but this is a little bit of adventure for me! I’m also thinking about streaming it too, so I’ll probably post on Twitter (@DrMelon) if that happens, along with any cool stuff that happens!

So, to summarize:

Tools:

Unreal 4,
GIMP/Aseprite,
Blender/Makehuman

Switching Tracks

I was originally going to use Unreal 4, in order to learn it: however, it’s obvious now it’s going to take a little longer than 48 hours to learn it well enough to actually use it.

So I’m switching to HaxeFlixel; the idea I have works very well in 2D, and the Flixel library provides a ton of handy stuff. Additionally, if I’m using Haxe, I can compile to Windows, Flash, HTML5, Android and more without changing my code.

So here goes!

Progress!

Things are happening! Hooray!

Tomorrow I’ll make a final push and hopefully everything will fall into place.

As you can see, I’m going for a slightly sinister vibe with this! There’s more than meets the eye, etc!

Getting there!

I still have to come up with a title!

And I’m done!

Whew!

A few last-minute bugs making me panic, but it’s done!
Hooray!

So, what did I think of my first LD?
It was awesome! I really enjoyed having to come up with a ton of small ideas, and it taught me a lot! Definitely participating for LD 30!
Best of luck to everyone else still going – you can do it!
Looking forward to playing all of your things!

I’m in! Time to learn Phaser!

After having a moderately successful LD last time, I want to use this one to learn Phaser! (www.phaser.io)

Can’t wait to get started!

I love how floaty you are– it’s a dream, of course dream physics are in effect.

Looks great. I was about to suggest you make the jump less floaty, but now that I’ve read Thingo’s comment, I’m not sure I should. 😀

Submitted! Check it out!

I’m in!

It’s been a while since my last LD, because of exams and stuff. But I’m ready to get back into it again!
