First Ludum Dare for me!

Hello fellow game devs!

This will be the first Ludum Dare I’m competing in and I just wanted to wish everybody luck in their games c:

Can’t wait to see this compo’s submissions!

Idea acquired – now sleep.

2.18am in the UK, but an alarm set for tomorrow as I have a great idea for my first LD! c: Just hope nobody else has thought of it. :p

Will keep up to date on Twitter in the morning. Follow me if you’re interested! @Flyinpig5

Now, sleep.

Bout to sleep as well. Good luck, man!

2 and a half hours in c:

Two and a half hours into my first Ludum Dare, and got an awesome idea :p

Progress pic:

ProgressPic1 - 2hrs 30mins

Update! :D

After a few more hours work and a lunch break, I’ve finally got tiles to automatically change sprite depending on how many neighbours it has and the neighbours’ location! First time I’ve done it, and it went pretty well.

ProgressPic2 - Lost track of time already

Now just to pretty it up and start turning the engine into a game! c:

Timelapse of the first 12 hours of development!

Sorry about poor quality, it’s what Chronolapse puts the video together in. I’m not going to hand place over 6500 pictures so you can get a 720p video c:

This is my first 12 hours of work on my 2D side-scrolling puzzle-platform for Ludum Dare 28. Sorry about the flashing, because each frame is 5 seconds and it’s 30fps it was flashier than I was expecting c:

Expect the final half tomorrow! (First 3 minutes 55 seconds of tomorrows video will be this video so I can have it on here in full. This video will be removed when that video goes up :p)

Enjoy!

java.lang.reflect.InvocationTargetException

This error has had me stumped for around 4 hours now… Does anybody know what it is?

I’m not a java programmer, so I don’t know, but somebod at stackoverflow will surely know and you’ll hopefully get an answer quick.

“Use the getCause() method on the InvocationTargetException to retrieve the original exception.”

I don’t think I’ve done reflections, but I might have done accidentally :p I’ll try the getCause() and see if that provides me with more detail. If not, I’ll try StackOverflow. Thanks guys!

Nearly done!

I’ve almost finished with my game for this time. Just a couple more things to perfect and 3 more levels to make, and that’s all!

LD30

I’m in!

After having my birthday this Wednesday, I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to enter due to family visiting, but since that has been postponed I shall be entering in my second LD! (Missed April because of the damn things called exams)

Language: Java

Libraries: None (going barebones :p)

IDE: IntelliJ Idea

Graphics Software: GIMP or Paint.NET, whichever is needed

Music Software: FL Studio 11

Game type: Depends on theme. Either side-scrolling or top-down because I’m not good enough for 3D :p

Diet: Dr. Pepper, Kettle Chips and Galaxy

Music I’ll be listening to: My rather extensive library of songs on shuffle (many days worth of music, 50GB of the stuff)

Sleep schedule: No

Good luck to all!

Lighting complete!

Well I was originally going to do this without any libraries, but at the last second I changed my mind and decided to use LWJGL instead! :p

Here is the lighting engine I have created for the game:

OpenGL Lighting engine

I guess it’s time to start making an actual game!

Game idea and lighting demonstration

So I have an idea for a game!

It’s going to be a platformer where you must go into another area called the light realm. This is where you are able to place lights (shown in the video by the white background with red squares). This will be limited to a certain amount per level. You must switch back and forth between the realms to work out where to place your lights to then be able to find a route to the exit of the level.

It will make more sense when it’s done.

Here’s the video! (It actually runs at about 100fps but FRAPS slowed it down A LOT)

Playtesting

I’m playtesting my game to see how easy the current levels are, although the results are biased as I know the levels since I designed them. Regardless of the fact that I designed these levels, this has happened far too many times.

Whoops.

Onwards!

Are you using old OpenGL or Buffers / Shaders?

Music

GAH! Music is difficult!

I’m not even sure what sort of music to make!

Do you think it should be fast and trancy or slow and somber for a game that looks like this?

I’m thinking trancy, but I want to hear you opinions! Let me know!

I would do a more trancy or ambient style music.

After-sleep update!

Forgot to make an update before sleeping last night, so here is one now!

After around 12 hours of work yesterday I had the lighting, most of the game mechanics, the menu and 5 levels done (soon to be more). Here is something I added just before making this post today:

Onto making more levels and adding more interesting things such as reverse gravity and if I have time, water!

How many levels?

Just a quick post to ask you guys, how many levels should I do? I’ve done nine and I think that’s OK but I don’t want to do too little or too many. Let me know in the comments please!

Well it is ludum dare and for ludum dare purposes we have to rate sooo many games. I’m sure 9 levels is fine but more is always better. It also depends on how easy or fast each level is passed. If it takes like 2 seconds, you’ll need like 100 but if it takes about 1 minute, 5 is great.

Hope that helps

Finished!

I think I’m finished! Just time to export it and upload it to itch.io or something. Java applets are always fun.

All done and uploaded!

Well, here is my entry to LD30!

Visibility is a light-based puzzle game where you must place your lights in efficient ways in order to be able to illuminate a path to the exit. In order to place these lights, you must be in the light realm. Entering into the realm is as easy as hitting space.

This game isn’t as linked to the theme as I had hoped, but I still had fun writing it.

Sounds may not work on Mac or Linux unless you have the required codecs, as they are .wav files.

There isn’t an applet at the moment as Java (and LWJGL) is rather awkward to port to browser without your own website to upload to. Sorry about that.

Post-Mortem! (From August, though)

I participated in LD30 in August and wasn’t able to do the one just gone. I had never really showed my game I made that weekend and seen people play it first hand. I got a lot of good comments about it (from the competition and real people, including strangers) and people have said that I should Greenlight it and attempt to get it on Steam.

So that’s what I’m doing!

It’ll take me a couple of weeks to fix up the last bugs, add some more levels and make it more efficient and also to create trailers and logos for it, so if I don’t get too distracted then it should be on the Greenlight page in early January next year!

Here is the original submission, so give it a try. After looking through the project files I have realised that levels 6-9 are broken (The spawnpoint is in the wrong place, you spawn very close to the exit xD) which is a result of finishing the game up after 20 hours without sleeping. I’m sure you all know the struggle.

If people are interested, I will post periodic updates on here (or maybe make a blog for it) on how things are getting on and we’ll see where this goes!

My game from LD30, Visibility, now on Steam Greenlight!

Post-Mortem is almost at completion! While the game isn’t 100% finished, the Steam Greenlight page is up and running for you to all go and vote if you wish.

If you do vote, it would be much appreciated if you leave a comment saying what you voted and why, to help improve the game in the future c:
