So I guess… I’m in?

I’ve been holding off throwing my hat into the ring until I had something that might have some chance of being submitted…
Having spent most of yesterday lost in an ocean of half-ideas, I’ve been pushing forward with a shape-shifty endless runner. Nothing particularly original or clever, but I’ll be very happy to just get it in a playable state by the end of the jam.

I’ve been dabbling with game dev for a few months… This is my first LD, and in fact if I manage to submit an entry it’ll also be my first ever game!

I can’t seem to post images for some reason, so I can’t show how’s looking right now… but graphics aren’t my strongest suit, so… umm… ‘minimalist’. I guess.

Update: Aha, now I’ve made my first post, I can add an image… here ‘tiz.

Day 2… so, so tired…

Thought I’d post an update before I crawl off to bed…
My game’s taking shape… it’s rather basic compared to some of the incredible looking submissions I’ve seen, but I’m mostly happy-ish with my effort thus far.
Here’s how it’s looking:

ShapeSquangle - Day 2

The idea is to collect the various shapes. Only active shapes can be collected and the player collides with non-active shapes and static blocks.
The rows of blocks/shapes are moving at an increasing speed to the left, pushing the player back… so it’s basically an endless runner.

I’ve run into countless problems over the last few days that I’m sure a future version of myself will look back and cringe at. The physics aren’t fantastic… but it’s playable.

There’s still some bits to do before I can submit, including sounds and gameover… I have to work tomorrow so it’ll be tight to get everything ready and submitted after work, but I’ll give it a go.

Oh my…

I’m currently uploading the game to my server, ready for submission…
How did this happen?!?!

Shiftah – My first Ludum Dare experience

Ludum Dare 35 saw not only my first submission, but indeed the first game I’ve ever put out.

Shiftah
I wasn’t too happy with the game, it has a few problems and I’m sure I could do better – but nevertheless I’m proud of getting something out there in the small time frame.

I have to say, I’ve been floored by the level of positive feedback and encouragement I’ve received. The LD community has been very welcoming, friendly and kind.
So thanks everyone. Thanks for welcoming a newcomer and thanks for the encouragement.

I’ve posted an in depth write-up of my first LD experience over on my blog. The gist of it is, this is awesome.
I’m very much looking forward to more game dev, and my next LD!

I'm in?

I have about a million things to do this weekend, and I guess I'm adding 'write a video game' to the list. My second LD. I have zero ideas. It's late. Assuming I can come up with something, it'll be in Phaser. I heart Phaser.

Phaser generators

Ugh! Every time I sit down to write a game in Phaser there are about fifty new 'generators' that have been released and I end up spending hours trying to decide which is best to use!!

I have... something.

Well, it's 4am here and I'm beginning to seriously doubt my chances of getting something ready in time. I've got too many commitments this weekend! Still, after a whole bunch of head scratching I have basic movement of my player down.
This may well be as far as I get, but we'll see what happens after... sleep...

First mock up

I'm no artist, so I've spent way too much time today battling with my poor Photoshop skills, to produce this minimalist little mock up. Yet to type a line of code... oh dear.

First-mock-up.png

I know I should just use some free assets and concentrate on the bit I can actually do, (arguably) - but I always end up rolling my own. Ahh well... off to VSCode now.

So that's my Saturday...

About 15 hours all in today... it's slow going and I can't be sure I'll get anything finished this side of the deadline. Nevertheless, as with every day I've spent tinkering with game dev, I've learned loads and made some progress.

So thus far we have our little dude, he can move around, jump about, and land on platforms. What more could our little dude ask for?

Liquify Bo!

I didn't get much time to work today, but I've managed to get the core mechanic working. Our hero (named Bo) is unable to traverse the platforms above without some help, in the form of extra platforms that he can obtain by sacrificing one of his own lives. At least it's quick.

End of day two...

Well, there was no way I was going to get this finished in time for the compo... It's 2.30am and I have work tomorrow, so not sure how much time I'll get to finish in the evening. Still, I'm making good progress. A few teething problems, but it's playing well. Will need to create a few more levels and add a bit of polish, but I'm fairly happy with where I've ended up.

Use your lives to gain additional platforms.

Finished work...

...and now under 9 hours left to finish my game. On the one hand, there's way too much left to do to get it up in 9 hours. On the other hand, I've done too much work on it to not submit... So I guess, some things are gonna have to be cut.

Nearly done...

Game is basically finished - one more hour to make some levels and launch! (No sound... no time...)

It's done!!!!

I cannot quite beleive I managed to get something published in time. The last eight hours have been some of the most productive of my life! I didn't have time for sound, but other than that I'm really pleased with the result.

Liquify Bo! Is a silly little platform puzzle game, where our hero must exchange lives for additional platforms, with which to traverse the level.

I've almost killed myself making it - I hope you life it!

We're in...

Been looking forward to this for months... This year, and for the first time, I'm going to be working with a friend... which is going to be awesome! I can't seem to find info on how to set us up as a team, so that our game appears on both profiles. Is this possible or do we just have to pick one?

And so, to bed...

Theme discovered... Completed braindump of barely formed, half cocked and largely idiotic ideas... Now, to bed. Good luck all.

First virtual meeting and we have our game idea thrashed out.

Essentially, our PCs job will be to protect some NPCs from a constant onslaught of attacks from enemies. A bit of fun and cutsey pixel art and about a hundred different elements we'll never, ever, have time to implement... and we're good to go... LET'S DO THIS!!

And so we have, a duck...

A duck, with a gun (obviously) that walks, slowly, down screen. We can be proud of this for like, 6 hours work... right? RIGHT?18-2200.gif
