breakfast on the first morning of rara racer

Just woke up a couple of hours ago, and saw the theme. Ferociously busy, but have an idea.  Will try get the engine written today, add some game tomorrow…nothing coded yet though :/

and: breakfast (wip shot):

First screenshot

title screen

It might not be clear from the above screenshot, but it’s been a tough landmark to get to!  Okay, I’m only clocking in at 366 lines of code, and I haven’t even started on the game yet proper (no graphics done yet, for instance), but I’m finally in a good position to make progress.

First though: dinner!

I can has collision?

needs more collision, but…reasonably okay progress for the first day…will add basic sound effects, then catch me some sleep.

Rara Racer, Day 2

Morning of day two.  Have an itemized list of 9 things to do.  Doable things.  So: I’m on track then.

But first, breakfast:

Some progress

I actually have made some progress.  I decided to forego aggression and remove bullets.  Of my list of nine things, I have two-and-a-half done so far.  Not bad, I guess, but…more to do…

2 more things left

Only have two more things on my list of 9 left (which, thankfully enough, are more or less the same thing).  Nothing new to show for it just yet, though. :/

Rara Racer – Finished

Screenshot

Ah, it was work, but it’s more or less done.

Rara Racer Mac Build

I’ve made a direct mac port, it’s available here:

OSX 10.5 (2.3MB)

It’s identical to the windows one. I had been meaning to tidy up both a little bit before this release, but I haven’t had time.

Also, I’d like to say that I had a lot of fun this competition and, though it took some not inconsiderable amount of time time, and also playing through what entries I could; some really beautiful stuff came out of this competition. I look forward to the next one…

I won! (I think) .. seems I got a different tone once I reached the black cube? Anyway— this is great on so many factors. The title tie-in… where I’m like ‘ah ha!’ I get it. It is so tough in the second mode… when you are using the ‘burn’… and I like how the very time taken to solve the first phase is needed so that the ‘burn’ will work! I’m being intentionally vague to avoid any towlr spoilers… 😉 It took me like 4-5 attempts, but I got it (I hope). Great work!

That’s so interesting. It’s a very unique idea for a game. I did not solve it yet, I think I get too distracted too easily.

The Black Yeti

Keeping things minimal.  Just going to work on this for a couple of hours probably, in flash as well.  I found the topic relatively uninspirational, but I’m sort of happy with that, because it gives me an excuse to toss off something small :)

(some of the other stuff here is looking pretty nice…)

well.. the tileset is intriguing. :) looking forward to seeing how this comes together in your game.

black yeti is taking longer than expected

Have the basic game engine done, I think. Have some levels done, need to do more. No sound effects yet. Need to work on level-loading now (currently hardcoding, which won’t work).

the game itself is turning out, happily, much nicer than I had anticipated :)

awesome! I loved this game. fun puzzle game play with brief but amusing texts in between the levels. nice work. :) I think I mostly got the way it was working but sometimes I’ll admit I was slightly confused but managed to brute force my way through the paths to safety. very cool idea and great use of theme.
09. Feb 2009 · 11:12 UTC
yeah; I will admit it’s not as *clear* as it might be, but whatever. cheers!
09. Feb 2009 · 13:49 UTC
That was fun! I have to admit though I never completely figured out the mechanic. I liked the atmosphere.
09. Feb 2009 · 17:26 UTC
That was fun! As a top-down game, the rules would have been a lot more obvious, I think, but from this view it was a bit of a puzzle.
09. Feb 2009 · 17:42 UTC
cap: the perspective thing is an important point; I hadn’t thought about it much.
09. Feb 2009 · 19:33 UTC
It was fun, but I was stuck for a long time on one of the levels. I’m still not sure I really understand the rules.

The storytelling mechanism worked very well.
09. Feb 2009 · 20:08 UTC
I got stuck on level 5 or 6 – I don’t understand how you can be seen (like the !, MSG moment flashbacks) and then run straight at the guy for 30 steps and kill him in one situation, but in others one extra step kills you?

Fun story, fun game. The text was really neat and added a lot to the game. It was fun to watch the yeti progress alongside the story. I kind of had the same mechanic issue that others had, but hey, I enjoyed it. :)
11. Feb 2009 · 15:15 UTC
I finally got around to playing this one…

It makes me sad… Poor little Yeti :(
phren
12. Feb 2009 · 16:22 UTC
The mechanic wasn’t clear as previous comments have mentioned, and I don’t know if it’s a positive or negative thing. I brute forced my way through a few levels while some were pretty obvious.

getting started

grrr had trouble coming up with something.  have finally committed to an idea at the least.  here be a mockup:

time to get coding now…

Intriguing…

nighty nighty

So instead of spending this evening coding the game, I spent it trying to get SDL/Allegro working with Lisp/Scheme.  No love, so back to C++ tomorrow for the final push (and, indeed, the first push…).

Don’t recommend you drop everything for it at this point, but I did my last two Ludum Dares in PLT-Scheme with SDL and OpenGL. You could check them out if you want.

empire the wall

mac build only for today. windows tomorrow.  it’s really awful though, so nobody’s missing anything.

oops forgot linky

Ludum Dare was fun last weekend. My entry ended up being not by any means satisfactory, though, and mainly jammed into the last few hours of sunday evening.

Nonetheless, here be it:

windows
OS X 10.5+ (Intel)
Source

Okay, as per requested:instructions.

1: you initially occupy one ‘equipped’ square.
2: when anyone approaches an equipped square, they will be forked and killed.
3: you can only move about on dead bodies.
4: if you move to a piece on the periphery of your ‘kingdom’ (of dead bodies), you equip it.
5: if an equipped square is completely surrounded, it becomes unequipped.
6: there are blue guys, they are rather aggressive, and can destroy your tiles.
7: if they destroy a tile you’re on, you die.
8: the game keeps track of the maximum size your kingdom has been; if it ever differs from this by more than ten, you die.

I’ve decided to participate. I’ll be working in SilverLight again. I hope the theme isn’t super hard like LD13’s was.

What time will it start? What will be the theme be? Who else is playing!!! I can’t wait!!!

Mini LD 10 GO GO GO

The theme is Domestic Violence.

Let’s put a not-too-strict deadline of midnight sunday GMT on it.  (I’ll have a hectic weekend, so might not get my entry in until monday, say).

Assets, code can be premade/reused, &c.

wow, loose rules, fun theme. Hrm… but if I spend too much time on this mini-ld, I’ll be LIVING the theme.. hard choice
26. Jun 2009 · 11:54 UTC
This is a topic very close to my heart. Hrm.
26. Jun 2009 · 13:49 UTC
Oh…. tricky theme. I think I’ll spend the extra time brainstorming ideas.
26. Jun 2009 · 15:41 UTC
Hmm, a serious theme. I’m sure I am not the only one who has been exposed to violence at home. Home should feel like a place of safety more than any other, if there is fear in the home, there will not be a good foundation to grow as individuals and especially to be able to grow together as a family. Even the indirect and non-physical forms of violence at home can have a stunting effect on childhood development.

That’s a strange theme you’ve got there. I’ll probably just use pets to avoid anything too serious. 😛

The “tame” interpretation we talked about in the channel involved houses doing battle with each-other.

26. Jun 2009 · 18:36 UTC
oooo this could be interesting, I wanted to do something with this theme for awhile. Hopefully I can get something done.
27. Jun 2009 · 07:49 UTC
I’m exactly 24 hours without the sleep at the moment, so I’m glad the deadline is not-too-strict. Hopefully, I’ll do something. (and hopefully it won’t be just saying this time)
27. Jun 2009 · 11:37 UTC
Mine is coming along nicely, ish. I’m terrified, and I have a raging boner. Is this what it’s like to make games?

wwwwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagh

Nothing done yet; my laptop spent the weekend in the service of a higher power.  I’m going to get started on something tonight, though :)  Better late than never…
