This might be the fastest we've ever thought of an idea for one of these.
Here's a hint:

Here's a hint:

OH YEAH! Pre-rendered FTW! (though it definitely won't be this smooth in the game)
Hopefully we have a game by Monday
For the first time, I think we bit off more than we could chew, we might have something tomorrow, but neither of us can really work on it past today. Dang. The graphical rendering took too long to figure out.
...and no, we're not going to bother with the extended time whatever; if we can't get a score, we don't care. We may or may not give up to make a complete game, but odds are the former, rather work on a different project that isn't LD related.
It's nothing like we planned, it's brutally difficult, it lost a lot of good ideas that we probably could have had time for had we used Game Maker, however

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/51/$296663
chances are we might tinker around with it until the jam ends, so maybe wait a few more hours lest your high score get cleared.
If you did, I wanna play it.
BTW, If you would like to try out our non-VR game: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/51/sub-scured
~~Ok, halfway through the slaughter. Kept 21 so far.~~
Finished, kept 35.
Themes I will never vote for: - anything NSFW: if you want to make a Pr0n game, then you do you, but don't make everyone. (not that there were that many, if any, this time around) - blank the un-blank-able: by definition impossible - obvious meme themes: not that they couldn't work, but they are too vague to really make good concrete ideas, and yet oxymoronically too specific to let the theme breathe, e.g. meerkats or floating islands - themes that limit the genre: e.g. platformer (note, this doesn't apply to themes that require a mechanic, e.g. cards) - themes that are inevitable: e.g. the game gets harder as you go
I also will only vote for themes that I think I can realistically make on my own or with a friend in 2-3 days (learn to scope and K.I.S.S.).
and of course it is the theme that inspires no ideas mechanically or thematically beyond the obvious. way to go everyone.
every freaking definition no matter how wacky in interpretation leads back to the same thing
first it was thinking of it as a superlative, but unless it's about a man named Harve who happened to be the Harve-est of Harves, the only other definition of harve is a plough.
so then I saw that it has precisely one single-word anagram, which is "thraves," but I kid you not, the definition of thraves is a bunch of sheaves, which are bundles of wheat
any bets on what the final proportion of farming games to grim reaper/organ harvesting to everything else there will be? I'm thinking 40 farming:50 reaper:10 other (only because most people are going to try to avoid the absolute obvious)
Well, my friend and I hated the theme, so instead we decided to get off our asses and finally start working on a project that we've had planned for a while.
I still will probably play some of the games if they look particularly cool.
a few QOL reminders: - add a quit button, it takes maybe one minute, even if it is just press ESC to quit - if you are using Unreal, go into settings and uncheck VR, unless of course you are making a VR game
that's about it. If you are making a VR game, I wanna play it (or if your game has nothing to do with farming). I'll repost this minus the QOL on like Monday so you can paste your games in the comments (preferably if they are at least one of those two things).

modular: doesn't necessarily mean a game that is entirely modular; you could take it more as inspiration rather than as directions
alternate reality game: not to be confused with ARG (augmented reality game, for the few who don't know), this isn't just "what would __ be like in a different universe," this could be completely off-the-wall, "what might a game from a different universe look/play like entirely" (admittedly not the best theme, but could be fun, have had the idea floating around since LD52)
mixed metaphors: a watched pot gathers no moss, a bird in the hand makes Jack a dull boy; could be fun coming up with wacky ideas, as they say "The sky has its day" or is it "Every dog is the limit"
Normally, I would try to think of themes that are more evocative of actual concrete ideas rather than topics to use, but I had the one idea for a while, and the other two I thought could be fun.
slaughtered 205, kept 7 so far.
Also to whoever put in three "All Star" quotes:

I want to participate, especially if the theme is good (If it ends up being "You are not the main character," I'm out; sorry to whoever suggested that, but it's a garbage theme that along with "you are not the protagonist" and "you are the antagonist" is by definition impossible), but I might have to work a ton this weekend.
And no, I'm not going to do the extra, it's earn a score on Monday or bust; extra is just glorified sharing your game on reddit.
I can think of a ton of ideas, but trying to think of one that I can do in 48 hrs that is going to stand out is where the challenge always lies, I also still have work to do this weekend, so who knows
I've got one absolutely killer idea that I cannot do on my own, would probably take a decently sizeable team (if you want it, you can have it, I will play it if you do): It is a drone-based organ transplant delivery service, working title could be D (for drone)-Liver-y. The only problem is that the only way for the drone to carry the organs is with a claw machine claw. It would be an I am Bread/I am Fish-style rage game that combines soft-body physics of organs with flight controls of a drone with the infuriating claw mechanics of a claw machine.
yes I already posted this, but I think it really should be made and I absolutely cannot do it for the compo, so if you want it, please make it happen

About halfway through the slaughter, and as usual a good 50-60% of them are themes I will never vote for:
the theme is too limiting. These are themes that require a genre, art style, or specific style. For example, roguelike, one color, or narrative. I don't want to play 50 or so roguelikes or monochromatic games or "deep" narratives; don't confine everyone to doing the same #$%&ing thing!!! Note that this doesn't necessarily apply to specific mechanics, for example cards; these are usually open enough that you can cleverly use them in almost any scenario. another good example is "multiplayer." Don't force everyone to make a multiplayer game; plenty don't know how, and even more don't have the means to play them as intended.
the theme is too open. On the other end of the spectrum are themes that spark no idea whatsoever. These are usually lazy, one-word themes (not all one-word themes are bad, mind you) like "literally" (calling you out whoever suggested that!). The point of a theme is not just to have something that is included in the game, but also to be cleverly utilized into the game. Basically, the the theme should be inseparable from the game without limiting what the game can be as to point 1.
the theme is nonsense. This shouldn't need to be said, but themes like "rrrrrrrrrrrrrr" will always be downvoted (or flagged).
the theme is inevitable. Themes that naturally occur over a game's progression will always get downvoted. These are themes like "game gets harder as you go" NO #$%&ING $#!T SHERLOCK!!!!
the theme is impossible. The two best examples I always see in this category are "you are an NPC" and "you are the antagonist." By definition an NPC is NON PLAYABLE!!!! and also by definition, the antagonist is just the character/s that oppose the protagonist (a.k.a. the main playable character). If you meant to say "you are the villain" than just $#@&ing say "you are the villain"
the theme is oxymoronic. Finally if the theme is a two-word (generally) theme along the lines of "blank the un-blank-able," it will get downvoted. For example "prehistoric future"
7. Bonus, if the theme is a meme or NSFW, it will get flagged, no exceptions. Sorry snowman symbol and flying islands, enough is enough.

also, please at least try to spell your themes correctly
holy crap I almost made the character limit
