Time for my first game jam

First time trying a game jam. Hopefully get something finished in time. It'll also means I might finally finished building something in Unity and motivate me to finish some half completed projects. Looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with.

First Day Done - More productive than I expected

Calling it a day. Had much better progress than I expected, thanks to having an early idea of what to make. Going for a first person code/treasure hunting kind of game where different codes are needed to manipulate the looping map. Find the correct combination and escape. Simple idea but about where my skill level is at the moment. Most of the day was working on the console the codes are entered. The code is messy but it works. Day 1 Image.png Keep up the good work everyone, looking forward to playing some of the entries and ideas shown so far.

Day 2 - Trapped in my own loop

After trying to clean up some of my code I broke my game. Ended up causing it to be in a continual loop of menus with no escape, all the while still being able to control the character. After spending all day trying to find the problem I made (and having a quick nap after checking thee same things over and over) I finally fixed it. Unfortunately this took away some time I wanted to spend setting up the map. So the game won't be as long as I originally planned but then thinking about it that would probably turn this from a game of running in circles finding codes to one of frustration. Day 2 Image.png Tomorrow will be getting the last touches to make it playable then possibly some polish.

13 Codes - Finished and ready to play

Finished and submitted my entry. Title.png A puzzle like maze where you find codes to adjust the map. Also an unintentional loop careless explorers can fall into (now a feature). Download the zip file here: https://jammygunns.itch.io/13-codes

Keep up the hard work everyone. Looking forward to trying out the games entered.

I'm in too.

I had to skip LD48 due to work and family commitments (April is always hectic in our household).

This one will involve some extra juggling to complete as my wife will be away for work so she won’t be able to help with keeping our daughter occupied. So, this time around I’m giving myself a simple goal; make a game with more colours than just grey and include some audio. Basically, try to get a little more than the silent, grey maze I did last time.

As usual, for me, my chosen tools are: Unity, Blender, a potato model laptop set up on a picnic table and in order to be able to have some audio BFXR.

Looking forward to seeing what everyone makes.

First day of organised chaos

I was worried about getting a workable idea at first. I came into this jam planning to do a plat-former but couldn’t think of a gimmick I could implement. So, after some thought I got my current idea.

I was going with resource management/placement game, even if it meant learning a control system I’ve not practiced yet. After taking a break to handle parental duties, I realised I was actually planning out a board game. So why not make it look like one!

Here’s a shot of some of the parts, I might need to adjust the colours but that’s an “if I get time” task.

Image Day 1 - Pieces.png

As for scripts I’ve got the piece movement and the skeleton of the scoring system. Game rules now planned out (I removed some of the more complex ideas to keep in the time-frame).

Tomorrow I won’t get too much time to work on it, with a kids’ party to go to and a promise to take my daughter swimming. But I hope to at least finish of the scoring system and start the scripts for the basic enemy system using the Pandemic and Battlestar Galactica board games as a guide.

Good thing I’m going for the Jam instead of Compo. I’m going to need the extra day.

Hope you are all going on track and not hitting too many troublesome code (some has to happen or it wouldn’t be Ludum Dare).

Day 2 - A whole lot of nothing

After a day of kid's parties, swimming and playing my little ponies with my daughter I finally tucked her into bed and sat down to work on the game... then realised how much I have left to do.

You know what? It can wait till tomorrow. I need sleep more. (image is not related to my game)

I've finished

This has been the most involved project I've managed to complete.

Now it is done and submitted I'm getting some sleep.

Look forward to trying out the creations everyone has made for this Jam.

Thoughts from day 1

After missing out on over a year's worth of game jams due to work, moving interstate and health issues I'm finally able to join in a jam again!

When I saw the theme I had no idea what to make for it (even though I did vote for it). My wife saw the theme and started listing a heap of ideas. So I picked the easiest one to make she thought of. This time round I'm wanting to try focusing on how create a feeling, so I'm going with her simple idea of a claustrophobic maze (the setting is the important part). Here's hoping I can get it to feel right.

Today wasn't a huge list achieved due to other commitments, but I'm quite happy with what I got done. Even if it is only a design doc, basic level plan and a new movement script (my usual wasn't restrictive enough). Now to take a break and let my daughter get some sleep. She's becoming fascinated with coding and would stay up all night watching if I let her... also need to see if my wife has stopped writing down ideas.

Happy jamming everyone and I look forward to seeing your creations!

Another day down. One more to go.

Managed to get the map built, finish the tutorial area (for the first time) and get most of the textures done. Just need to touch some of them up to make it less plain and more interesting to look at. Down to recording my audio, finishing the ending and trying to implement the mechanic to adjust the events in the level. Might end up dropping the event adjustments if I start running short on time.

As I mentioned previously, my goal this time around is to create the right mood/feeling.

Here's a look at what it is like so far:

This image was brightened. I may have made the game too dark.

I'm looking very forward to trying out some the games displayed so far.

Happy jamming!

and... submitted

After a day of trying to get the last of my game done I couldn't get the last mechanic I hoped for done. So I scrapped it/hid it away (I'll get back to it later) and focused on the aspect I wanted to work on this time around. The way it feels. Hopefully I got along the right lines... even with some dev art still in there and limited animations. Well I can't go any longer on this, work tomorrow and I need some sleep. Now I get the other fun part of trying out a range of creative games by all of you. Happy jamming!

Ludum Dare 56

It is that wonderful time of year again!

After a hectic year where I had no time to try starting any game dev projects, Ludum Dare 56 falls on a long weekend here while work is predicted to be quite. So I have the whole weekend with not needing to take leave from work.

While I had hoped to have learned some new tools to use (so as to expand what I have available), I've not had a chance to do more than look at the differences between them and what I usually use. So, to be more likely to complete a game, I'm sticking with the ones I know for this one.

Each jam I've took part in I've given myself a goal to work on, but have not decided on one yet for this time. Past ones have ranged from finishing a project, to having the aim to create an atmosphere in the game.

Looking forward to the manic fun of building a game and trying out as many of the creations we'll see afterwards.

Happy jamming!

Dawn of the 2nd day

Even with having to occupy a demanding tiny creature throughout yesterday (new puppy) I was able to get way further than expected. Glad I decided on a simple "find the bug" game.

Mechanics are done, now working on artwork. My daughter was having fun putting together different bugs for this game. With the 13 she's drawn with interchangeable parts we have over 2,000 possible bugs.

Now to adjust the images so they'll fit. She added more detail than expected.

Goal today is to get it to look reasonable, get some audio and implement a more obvious feedback to the player. While a simple concept it'll let me work on the areas I want to improve on.

Worried I forgot something

Either this new workflow worked or I have forgotten something important.

Anyone else get the feeling something is missing after their to-do list is done?
