I’m In!

Hello World!

This is my first LudumDare, and I will be doing the Jam.

I’ll try to keep posting my progress, and also I want to see what new ideas you guys have :)

Tools:

Unity3d – Graphics Gale – Inkscape – LMMS (Hopefully).

Cheers and Good Luck!

Day 1 Report

First thing I did when I saw the theme was to search on google, my mind was blank… later I had an idea of the Roman Technology and how they used it and I got the idea for a Tower Defence/Action/Upgrade game (I’m not really sure about what genre it is but I like it XD).

I did some drafts and here I’m an making a roman themed game.

I began coding in Unity when I had a precise idea of what I wanted, and I had been coding like 11~13 hours since.

I think I can finish before the Jam deadline,

Here’s a preview.

It needs more polish but all important mechanics are implemented and the desing is ~80% done.

Hopefully I can make a decent pixel art.

2nd Day Report

I continued doing some programming for the upgrade menu and fixing some states (I’m using state machine to control the game state, ex: Main Menu, Play Mode, Upgrade Menu, …).

There’s not much code left to do so I’m doing the art assets.

I did some drafts in pixel art and it looked horrible so I changed it to minimalistic. It seens like its quicker and easier to do so I might be on time.

2ndReportWalkCycle

A very simple walk cycle I did on Inkscape.

Obligatory .GIF of current progress.

Still lots of work to do, but I think I can make it before the deadline!

Hope to see something unique and polished from the other devs :)

PS: Please don’t mind the Charizards XD.

3rd Day – Final Report

Well I finished it!. Yay :)

I had a lot of game art to do so I managed to finish the animations for 3 enemies and reskin the upgrades menu and play state menus.

And also I found that I know how to make icons quickly!. That helped me making the UIs fast enough so I could do some other stuff like implementing music and sound (Thank you! Unity Assets Store), and implementing a save game (I’m not really sure if it works well, I hope it doesn’t crash XD).

Overall today I did a little bit of programming and a lot of art and post-production stuff (Publishing, Taking Screens, Making Icons).

Here are some previews and the link

Take my charge - Post Mortem

About the game

Thumbnail-Gamejolt.png Take my charge is a philosophical game where you have to solve puzzle and explore deep into the dreams of an advanced AI.

What went well

  • Game finished.
  • Sound effects that relate to the mood.
  • Managed to write a cohesive story.
  • Simplicity on art made me spend less time on it and more onto polish.
  • Easy design led to quick development (All features were done in ~5hr).
  • Some cuts on the game design did not affect the gameplay.

What went wrong

  • Spend the first day working on another game, them realized the scope was to high.
  • Wanted to do compo, but decided to polish it further for a better release.
  • Physics sometimes feels a bit clunky. (Should use Unity physics only for collision detection)
  • Camera follow is slow and offsets too high on the Y axis from the player. (Spend ~3h on this and after release solved it by putting the camera as a child of player).

Conclusion

I got caught on the first idea I got and spend a valuable day on it, I should have done more planning before compromising. But at the end I managed to make something simple with a great user experience and I’m proud of that.

Next time I’ll try be more careful on what idea I decide to work on.
