My first Ludum Dare

Hello, this is my first Ludum Dare(and my first game-programming chalenge).

Probably I’ll be the worst, but maybe i will only be in worst ten.

Language – Python(+ PyGame)

Art and music – home cooked(in this I’ll definitely be the worst), maybe freesound

And maybe I’ll use cx_freeze.

Good luck to everyone!!!

How I can rate the game???

I really don’t know how to rate the game.

So,  can you explain to me.

You will be able to rate once the competition ends (4hrs 44 minutes from now). You can only play and comment until then 😉

My game

Can you play and rate my game.

I think that somebody (maybe) rate my game when it doesn’t have Windows.

One questione: can we edit our game now?

You can edit your game to fix little bugs or to port to other platforms but not to add something (graphics, audio, or other).

BUT, if you want, you can do a post-compo, you can.

Doesn’t matter – the results are segmented anyway.

Five games I’ve rated fun with 5

These are five games I’ve rated fun with 5, I didn’t rated all with 5(because some have bad theme or something else):

GroundBreaker – Figglewatts – 48 Hour Compo Entry

Very good game. I rated it with best ratings (of games I played).

HolyDiver – Finn Stokes – Jam Entry

Please play and rate this game. It doesn’t have enough ratings, but it’s fun.

Wriggle Worm – gikdew – 48 Hour Compo Entry

This game have enough rating and it’s fun (but theme isn’t good).

Plunder Yer Booty – lambertjamesd – 48 Hour Compo Entry

Play and rate this game because it’s fun and it have web version.

Dig Hard – petey123567 – Jam Entry

It’s cool game(and really hard).

Few questiones

1. How many ratings are in each category?

2. Why visual mode sometimes doesn’t work?

3. How to see list of all games and its rating?

LD30

I’m in!

This will be my second Ludum Dare, so I wish myself and all other people luck.

I will use:

Python with PyGame for programming,

sfxr for sound effects,

Ninja as IDE,

Miscrosoft Windows XP Paint for graphic,

cx_freeze for compiling,

some-sites-that-I-don’t-know-for-now for music,

maybe(???) Tiled and tmx (by Richard Jones) for level desing,

Oxford Dictionary for searching for other meanings of theme,

and My Brain for… many things.

I also have one question:

why is on the oldest page on Ludum Dare (http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/page/4132/ for now) comments have date August 2000 and Ludum Dare started 2002, also why oldest comment isn’t by PoV (who created Ludum Dare)?

The reason for the old posts is obviously time travel.

Yay another Python-user. Maybe on a later Ludum Dare we could make a team.

My starting of Ludum Dare

Today I woke up two times.

First time it was night and I didn’t want to look what the theme is because of people in my room and I continue sleeping.

Second time it was something between day and night and I was thinking about turning computer on, and then I go to see what time it is, and it was 5:55.

I’m writing this post in 6:11 in my time zone, so you know the rest of the story.

Good luck to everyone!

Current progress

I have few things for now:

Story:

You are zombie-cyborg kid who is on mission to connect worlds which are in war.

Gameplay:

Some levels are shooter, some are platformer and some are arcade.

There are Mini Worlds which are like Mini Games.

And there is Final Match – no comment.

Game:

Currently working on platformer, didn’t do anything else.

Created one enemy (with no AI).

I have problem with transparency in tiledtmxloader, so if anyone can help, please help.

I also have problem with cx_freeze so I can’t create exe (that works).

Here is the source.

Post mortem

I fixed one error in my game, so try it again.

My plan:

Connected Worlds:

Mixed genre – Few types of levels (which have different genre)
+ Mini Worlds – In levels to make character stronger, etc.; different genre
+ Connection – Story: in mission to connect Worlds in war
Final Match – End of the level; like Mini World but bigger

Level types:
|e|t|m| e-enemies t-traps m-Mini Worlds[1-the smallest; 4-the biggest]
|1|4|3|+ End platformer – Have platforms, you must reach END POINT
|3|2|1|Killing platformer – Have platforms, you must kill amount of enemies
|2|3|4|End shooter – More enemies than platformer, you must reach END POINT
|4|1|2|Killing shooter – More enemies than platformer, you must kill amount of enemies

Final match types:

Boss – one big enemy, and few small enemies; must kill big one
Final wave – many small enemies; must kill amount of enemies
Cleaning – rest of enemies that survive will be aginst you

+ Platformer:

Enemies types:

+ Jump-aware – you can jump on them and kill them
Jumpers – you can jump on them
Fallers – they can hurt you only if they jump on you
+ Normal – you can kill them only by shooting
Spikes – you can’t kill them

(I mark with ‘+’ things what I did)

Comparing this game and previous LD game:

This game has story previous doesn’t.

This game has level chooser with 50 levels (+story) previous have only start button.

This game has one working level (other 49 are fake) previous have one infinite game loop.

This game has 5 types of enemies previous 4.

Two of this game enemy types have automatic shooting.

In this game you have one weapon (laser) in previous too (fishes).

In this game you are earning more laser entering the Mini Worlds in previous by eating fishes.

I put one dialog in this game, no dialog in previous.

In this game you can enter main menu from game in previous you can’t.

This game has sounds previous doesn’t.

This game has 32 used pictures previous only 10.

This game has 3 sound files, 2 tilemaps and 1 ttf file previous none of these.

This game has 907 code lines previous only 317 (blank and comment lines doesn’t count).

What went good:

– I finished game

-I create great game plan

-I created some really good art (for me)

-I created story

-I had main menu and so on before Ludum Dare started (I send link to my source code)

What went bad:

-Game was to slow in the end

-I created only one level

-Map is a bit of buggy

-Some transparency bugs

-Only one level type

-Only one Mini World type

-No Final Match

Faster version

Everyone who played my game:

I updated my game so now FPS is approximately 5 times faster and

other small bugs updated,

so please rate my game again.

Explanations of theme using in my game:

1. Story is to connect game worlds in war.

2. Big world (Level 1) is connected with Mini World (if you have better result in Mini World you will have more laser).

Hey, want some GameJam in November?

Ludum Dare ended and next one is (probably) in April,

so if you want go on some GameJam in November:

I created GameJam which:

  • starts on 29th November (beginning of Saturday)
  • ends on 3rd December (end of Tuesday)
  • voting ends on 10th December (end of Tuesday)
  • will be on Game Jolt
  • have theme (something like here)
  • have 3 rules for game (like theme, but a bit complex)
  • theme and rules voting will start 22nd
  • have 4 challenge rules (like rules for Ludum Dare)

If you want to suggest theme or rule just do it here.

For more info go on that page.

If you don’t understand something, please, say it here or contact me on any way.

Nope, next LD is in December. (as far as I heard)

Want to prepare for next Ludum Dare?

If you want to prepare for next LD I have great thing for you:

96h Jam with rules which:

  • starts on 29th November (beginning of Saturday)
  • ends on 3rd December (end of Tuesday)
  • voting ends on 10th December (end of Tuesday)
  • will be on Game Jolt
  • have theme (something like here)
  • have 3 rules for game (like theme, but a bit complex)
  • theme and rules voting will start 22nd
  • have 4 challenge rules (like rules for Ludum Dare)

It is longer (and easier) than Ludum Dare, so you will have good practice for Ludum Dare.

It’s pretty innovative: it is 4 days challenge and it have 3 rules (I think that no other Game Jam have these things).

It will probably be too small, but you can increase number of participants joining the competition.

And if you don’t want to join, but have great idea for theme/rule: please, suggest theme or rule here.

For more info follow links.

I hope you will join or/and suggest theme/rule or/and play games there. :)

LD31

I’m in, again

I’m in for third time and three is lucky number.

I will be using same things as last time.

Few questions about Ludum Dare 31 and me:

Am I ready?

No, I ‘m not!

Are you ready?

Probably not?

So how will we be good at LD?

You could test yourself by going on 96h Jam with rules. You can suggest theme/rule and soon you will be able to vote for themes and rules.

What is point of 96h Jam?

The point is that people make innovative and fun games following theme and rules (everything is explained on Jam site).

Who can participate?

Everyone who can publish game in Game Jolt (you just have to be singed as developer).

When will 96h be?

At beginning I thought it will start on November 29 and end on December 3 (Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday) but after a while I realized that I have some big jobs to do on Saturday and then I decided that Jam will start on November 30 and end on December 4 (one day shifted).

If you have good theme/rule you can suggest it (go on Jam’s page) but hurry Sunday is last day of suggesting.

Wish you all luck on Ludum Dare and 96h Jam (if you participate).

96h Jam with rules soon

Jam on 96h Jam with rules, make game in 4 days (96h), prepare for LD 31 and have fun!

I dare you,

I double dare you,

I Ludum Dare you!

Wh… w.. what?

LD32

96h Jam with rules

So 29th May 96h Jam with rules starts. I hope somebody from LD will participate.

Yes I know it’s takes time to participate in Jam (and you aren’t ready). So you may suggest Theme/Rule or play and rate games in Jam.
But you should hurry for suggestion because tomorrow after 10:00 (BSD) suggestion won’t be possible and theme/rules voting will begin.

Please, write you thoughts here (make comment on this post) – I’m open to new ideas.

Arduino Snake

I decided to make game with Arduino Uno this time. And I will probably publish it in Compo.

It’s simple snake game on 8×8 led matrix. And it’s good experience for now. Hoping to make something.
