LD19

7 hours, Infinite planets

So, I’m making a space empire game of some kind.  So far, I have infinite worlds being generated…kinda.

The Galaxy is made up of chunks.  Each chunk has a density according to this density map:

The Image itself is 516×516, and the pixel value is the ratio of planets to have in the chunk.  The Center of the galaxy will have very high density, and the edges will not.

The Galaxy keeps track of where the player is.  It then Generates the current chunk, and each chunk bordering the current.  Once the player edges past it’s chunk boundary, the Galaxy rebalances, Centering on the current chunk and generating the borders.

Currently, there are a max of 10,000 planets per chunk, but since each chunk is 20,000×20,000…thats a very low density.  I think i might decrease the chunk size.

10 hours, Names, Resource, and a plan

So, my Space Empire game is progressing.  I have Infinite Planets working perfectly.  I also spent some time writing a Planet Name Generator, and alot more time just flying around clicking on my planets and seeing what they are named.

I generated 100 sample names, and posted them Patebin: http://pastebin.com/LNqQwhqu

From there, I decided what I’m going to do with the game.  You will be conquering Planets, and taking them over.  Your faction will autoproduce new ships (Procedurally generated), and defend your space from Procedurally generated factions.  If a friendly ship sees you, it will follow.  If an AI ship sees an Enemy, it will attack it.  If a Ship is under attack, it will call for backup from it’s friends.  There is enough random in this space to start a big fleet fight from that.

Factions will be procedurally generated, and they will all be hostile (for now).

28 hours, Ownership, Factions, Empires

29 hours into Space Empires, a game about Discovery, Conquest, and building one big space empire.

I Rewrote the way the Galaxy handles each cluster of planets, leading to a very fast and very efficient search time and generation time.  A major issue was that I was recomputing all the planets on each cluster switch.  I made it so that it only generates new clusters, keeping the ones that exist before.

With that rewrite, Factions suddenly worked, so infinite factions to fight!  They have small sections of planets and will build an empire.

I still spend WAAAAY too much time developing just flying around and clicking on planets and seeing what their name is.

You aint gonna conquer the world by hugging

Really, Who does?  I guess that could be the LD20 theme, but it’s not.

2AM and I have other ships in space with me!  and I can shoot them!

The plan for LD19 submission is to get Empires working, have them spawn Ships, then troll around and try to conquer planets.  You will be doing the same.  I was going to have resources and such, but right now, you will discover empires…AND CRUSH THEM

Also, I realized there are like 10 other games named Space Empires, so imma need a new name for this game.

Now, I go to bed and get some real sleep.  I’ll be pushing the time limit to get Empires working and AI, but I think I can do it.

I actually think “You Ain’t Gonna Conquer the World By Hugging” would be a totally great name.

Flower Power

Hallo again!

Some of you may remember my Infinite space discovery game for LD 19.  You may also remember that it didnt go very well.  BUT! That was LD19.  This time around, I’m doing something different.

We are going to be eating the hopes and dreams of disabled orphans.  With this guy:

I’m making a platformer where this guy (Reginald), gets a cannon strapped to his back (it’s dangerous to go alone…) and is sent into the dreams of sleeping orphans.  His goal is simple…Eat.  Using the cannon, he will fight Dinosaurs and eat the sweet tasty hopes inside of dreams.

The twist, the cannon will shoot a random weapon.  I’m going to create a bunch of weapons and give you a random one at the beginning of each level.

Progress!

So, I mocked up a level background and what the game would look like, then directly imported those into the game and added a player object.

Im going to add some parallax background layers, so the bg will scroll while moving.  Yay Reginald!
