I’m in!

Probably gonna use Flash. I’ve got a some of my own libraries/utils/engines that I may use as well, it all depends on the theme.

The Word Alone

Alright, so I think I’ve figured out what my idea is… it’s a word game, but I’ll explain more later as I flesh it out.

I’m gonna be making it with Flash, and most of the art is gonna be done in Blender, then rendered and brought into Flash.

We happen to be also putting an offer on a house today, which is gonna take a ton of time, so I’m hoping I’ll actually have enough time to get this done!

Making Textures

I’ve been making textures for my 3D stuff. I needed a wood texture, but because of the rules, I have to create everything myself. I decided to take a photo of my laminate floor, and then tweak it in photoshop until it got closer to what I wanted.

I started with this:

Source photo of my floor

And eventually ended up with this…

Result, tweaked colours

…and this:

Result, smoothed out

I realize the smoothed one is pretty blotchy, but it actually looks decent on the game stuff itself.

Still working

So I left coding the game’s “undo” stuff until the very last minute, which was probably a pretty horrible idea, and the game will SUCK without being able to undo… Gonna see if I can squeeze it out in time!

The Word Alone is done!

Somehow I managed to finish it on time, I have no idea how.

I’m In

I’m innnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn.

No clue what kind of game I’m gonna make, but it’s gonna be fun.

Language: ActionScript 3

Framework: none, except some of my personal utility libraries, and maybe the Tonfall generative audio library.

Sound effects and music: Ableton Live

I probably won’t do a livestream because I get all anxious and work really poorly when people are watching. I’ll try to post on the blog a few times though.

I’m in!

So I think I’m actually going to have time for LD this weekend.

Depending on the theme and the type of game I want to make, I’m going to choose different tech.

If I want to make a touch/iOS targeted game, I’m gonna use Futile, my own 2D framework for Unity – http://struct.ca/futile

If I want to make an artsy/pixelly game with tons of bitmap effects, I’ll use standard Flash.

If I do any stuff in 3D (unlikely) it’ll be Blender. Otherwise I’ll be creating everything else in Flash.

I’ll use TexturePacker to pack textures, and Glyph Designer to generate my bitmap fonts.

Still don’t have an idea

This theme is great, but for every game I’ve though of, I get super excited about it and then realize there’s no way I can finish it in 2 days.

Gotta find something simple and then polish up to crazy levels.

If I can, I want to do something with generative/procedural music, but I’m not sure if that’s a worthwhile thing to think about at this point.

Finally have my idea

With 12 hours down I finally have my idea :)

I had a neat idea for a logical puzzle game, but it didn’t seem very fun, and a smart interface would have been really tricky to come up with. The idea was that you essentially have to work out the evolution backwards. So you’re given a modern creature, and you’re shown the earth’s “original creatures”, and you have to work out how the original creatures combined over time to form that modern creature. It’d be played with these “cards” that represent each creature.

Anyway, my new idea is more of an homage to an old Starcraft custom map called “Evolves Madness”. Basically it’s gonna be an super-simplified RTS game that takes place on a small map with 3 players, where each player’s base is constantly spawning creatures, and once in a while you send them to attack other players… As you rack up kills, you can upgrade your creatures, research special abilities, and do other fun stuff(?). Your goal is to destroy the both of the other bases. I don’t know how far I’m gonna get, but it’s gonna be a good stress test for my Futile engine at the very least.

Actually starting to code

Considering how ambitious my idea is, I really shouldn’t have waited this long to start coding! About 30 hours left in the jam, and I’m gonna need some sleep… so yeah, tricky.

I’m committing my code to my github as I write it, so if you ever want to see what I’m working on during the jam, just look there!

I’m in… Probably!

Gonna try to make something for this LD.

Tools: Unity, my Futile framework, Ableton Live, maybe Blender.

I think I might try to make a 3D game this time… Scary :)
