See the tentacles in action! :musical_note: Sound on to hear the first completed track :notes:

We're done! Hope you get 'sucked' in. good luck, level 5 is a face melter (our artist cant handle it).

We have put the 5 Level themes into an OST for the people who enjoyed the soundtrack.

or of course listen to them ingame for the full effect

We managed to create 5 levels for our game Sushi Ink over the weekend. Im pretty happy with them, they are tough but each one teaches you a different mechanic and we tried to make sure the 1* rating was reasonable so people could progress and experience the whole game.
Level 5 'weigh anchor' is the culmination of everything and tbh, pretty difficult. Because there is nothing after we wanted to make sure it offered a taste of the most difficult intense and mind-melting gameplay the game could muster.
The latest news is someone managed 2 on level 5! i can just about pass it with 1 and i made it! then again it was the last level made so i was fairly sleep deprived at the time of play testing!
Can you 3* the final level? can your mind multitask and enter a solid 3 minutes of sushi zen mastery?
though i warn you, level 5 is not for the feignt of heart!

Heres a little sneak peak at behind the scenes of how we built some physics based tentacles under time pressure for out game Sushi Ink

We also worked on some in editor tools to help us quickly generate tentacles of different lengths (which is what makes level 2 so much harder than 1).
You can see i built the tool late on day one when the delirium had set in!

If you want to see it in all its wiggly glory try Sushi Ink out here :)
So like in all game jams everything is very hectic at the last minute. With only a few minutes to go I noticed a potential bug when two systems came together.
In Sushi Ink you can chop up ingredients and you can also place things on the conveyor belt. Both systems work (mostly as intended).
However we realised because the ingredients are placeable you can also chop ingredients whilst they are on the conveyor belt... even when the conveyor belt moves the ingredient further away than you can reach. This leads to the tentacle being stretched to breaking point and suddenly pinging across the screen like below

Although my initial thought was to panic we'd missed a bug so close to submission, I realised that actually it made sense and i kind of liked the results  Who knows, maybe this is part of the pro strat that helps someone finally get 3 stars in level 5
If you want to give it a go yourself you can play Sushi Ink here! and be sure to comment if you found any other fun ways the mechanics work together!
Did you find any last minute surprises on your game? what were they? comment below!
Decided to run a test today to see how long I could make the tentacles in our game Sushi Ink.

so it turns out i run out of screen space wayyyyy before the physics break down
We found varied tentacle length a good mechanic to layer in like in level 2 below where two tentacles can reach the whole conveyor belt and two can barely reach anything!

Try it out yourself here! :). Would you like to see more levels with more variety?
Sushi Ink uses a conveyor belt in every single level. *level 5 even has two.... if you can reach that far ;).
The problem with conveyor belts however is to achieve the smooth curved loops we wanted in the game we needed to use connected bezier curves (a series of mathematical equations). Our team had only one programmer but everyone would need to share the load in level design. Either because of that... or maybe just because I hate myself, I decided to create a conveyer belt tool during the jam. This allowed everyone to easily place, drag and drop control points within the editor and get real time feedback on how it would look.

You can see the results above which I'm pretty proud of. It was a tough call with only 72 hours to get things done, but i think taking the time to unlock the rest of the team is what helped us to produce 5 levels within the jam. Despite some rough edges this is definitely something i think I'm going to take from this jam, polish up, and use in other games.

are there any assets, code or ideas are you going to take away from the jam and implement in another project?
If you want to know anymore about the different tools we used for Sushi Ink or if you want me to check your game out just leave a comment below!

unfortunatly giant sushi didnt make it into the game. However if your still interested in regular size sushi then give Sushi Ink a go now! :)
You know whats better than real life? Island life and exploring the ocean. You can try and beat the game and find the lost treasure.... or just chill out and watch the fishies. Explore the deep now!

:musicalscore: Darling its better, down where theres treasure; under the sea :musicalnote:

ohh well, I guess Sunken tallywackers grace sounds reasonable.
Do what you want because a pirate is free, you are a pirate!.
