Ludum Dare 55

Thank you!

Thank you for rating - even if the most categories are not so good, i got some good points in humor which is pretty nice. As this was my first godot game i am really satisfied with it. Also its one of my best "April LDJAM" games from rating lol.

See on the next jam :)

Ludum Dare 56

A Game Maker Question

I am currently still on switching from unity to game maker (also tried defold and godot). The reason is the very good console support on game maker.

However as i tried to go deeper i was wondering about the "art" and "engine" workflow if you using tools like Aseprite.

In engines like unity, godot and defold i could place my art files in a directory inside the project, import them and change them in aseprite without any problems.

In Game Maker it seems i can add a third party tool, edit the art file but not in the folder structure (it has some hash values). The next problem is : what if i export sprite sheet animations from aseprite ?

So my question is: What is your workflow when you working with aseprite and in special case for sprite sheet animations ?

Thanks in advance.

The "I'm in" Post :)

Hello Jammers, i am back for another Episode of "Ludum Dare". This will be my 17th time.

The tools i used

I would like to tell you which tools i probably used this time. - Art: Aseprite - Sound: Bfxr - Music: Beepbox or FL studio - Engine: Game Maker Studio 2 probably

So the engine is the keytopic again. I am still try to leave "Unity Land" so i am still trying out engine that have good consoles support(PS4/PS5 and switch mostly).

Last time i started with Defold and realized that i was not ready so i switched to GoDot and made my game. This time i plan to use Game Maker. I used it now some monthes for a game and i think i am ready to use it for a jam...hopefully :)

Some tips for jammin'

I would share some tips that are hopefully helpful for the jam: - Scope small but not too small. Means : yeah finish a game in a small scope but if you have too small or boring features it doesnt get good rated. - If you are on vacation and your head is full of sun and beach - don't jam. Really this brain is also on vacation and you don't get a good game out mostly (i tried this and failed lol). - Stream your development to twitch or youtube (even if it is just your desktop without talking). Because this forces you to focus on dev instead of browsing social media or something. - Get a template project ready. So you can prepare a project (also allowed for compo) with your tools and most used script, a title screen, credits, end scene. - Try to get your core loop ready as soon as possible to check if this is what your game should be. I know - i should also do this and don't paint art first haha. - Have fun and don't stress to much.

Tiny Beast Hunter

This is Tiny Beast Hunter - a game where you soak tiny creatures.

CoverArt.png

It is a bit inspired by Luigis Mansion so hopefully you like it.

Play it here : https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/56/tiny-beast-hunter

Are you ready to soak tiny creatures ?

Then play it : https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/56/tiny-beast-hunter

I also fixed one major collision issue where you was stuck in the ground.

It was my first Game Maker Jam Game and it was an interesting experience. Last Ludum Dare i first tried Defold and then used GoDot but i wanted this time to get familar with Game Maker.

Rate the "Danger" Games

I will post from time to time now games that are in danger zone from person i know or which seems very interesting :)

I'm in! For the 18th time!

For the 18th time i am happy to suffer the deep rabbit hole of gamedev :)

Screenshot 2025-04-04 205223.png

My Tech stack: - Game Engine: Game Maker Studio 2024 - Art : Asperite - Sfx : Bfxr - Music : Beepbox

In my ludum dare history i did most of the Games with Unity - but since 2 LDJams i moved away from Unity and made one in GoDot (before i tried with Defold) and one with Game Maker. Game Maker works currently best for me so i might stick for that.

Besides that some tips from an old veteran jammer: - Setup your template project now: this is btw. for compo totally ok if you have a base project with your code base. Saves you a lot of time. - Try to make the gameplay first..something that i also never did :D - Think about your time shedule and how much time you can invest realistic - Strip features if needed - seperate your todo list with "things that are required" and "nice2have" stuff

I really love this game.

This is btw. unusual that i love my creation :) This happens in 18 LDJams only around 4 times.

What is this game about ? It is a bout a young woman driving around with her electric wheelchair to figure out how deep it could be and what is on the end of the deep hole.

Your feedback is important!

I hope you like the game as much as i like. So i am happy to hear your feedback. I want to make a postjam version so any feedback is important.

Cation: Some rooms are harder yeah - so you need some fluid platforming skills :)

Is it just me ?

I am not sure if this is a bug but i conquered now many games and there is no rating to give like this:

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/57/dungeons-below

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/57/forgotten-files

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/57/exit

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/57/see-you-at-the-bottom

the last games didnt had ratings..some have but i am not sure why ? Is this a bug or is it just me ?

Give us some more feedback if you want!

A game where you drive down with a wheelchair.

First: thank you all who already played my game. It was an incredible time to make this game.

If you are still thinking if you should play this game: Here are some voices from our current users.

TBH - if you are not a player of hard platformers this might be a bit too challenging for you. Otherwise: try your best :)

Play it HERE

Some more reviews would be nice - if you want!

A short brief description what the game is about: A game where you drive down with a wheelchair. Or..some called it celeste on wheelchair. To be fair the gameplay is not so far polished as this from celeste.

What other users said about the game:

So if you want to try out by yourself give it a shot. NOTE: This game has some hard rooms :) Sorry for that. But i just love hard platformers.

YEEES!

I crossed finger but didnt believed that this time it could happen - so i am glad that it will happen and can now start preparing for Ludum Dare 58!

Thank you mike that you can make this happen in this hard times.

I'm in!

This will be an interesting game jam i hope. A week ago my son told me "we have on the 3th october a country wide free day"...i just totally forgot about :). So its a real chilli start in this jam..i relax and prepare until the clock hits ghost hour :D

My setup: - Game Engine: Game Maker probably (or Godot) - Language: GML or C# - IDE: Rider (if C#) - Graphics: Aseprite - Music: Beepbox, FL studio - *Sound: Bfxr, Famitracker

Engine is a broader topic. I switched from Unity to Game Maker some years ago for a couple of reasons. As i develop for consoles i wanted an engine which supports at least switch and PS4 & PS5 and doest cost too much...thats the most reason i currently using Game Maker now:).

As usual: some tips from a vetaran

To be best prepared for the jam here are some smaller advices:

  • Sleep, drink, code, design, repeat: Just sleep enough and also take care of yourself. It should make fun but tbh it will also be stressful sometimes.
  • Core loop first, design second: It's an advice which i also often not really follow even if i should :) try to get the core loop first with place holder graphics and then loop if this is what you feel.
  • **Small but not too small: Yeah i learned that too :) Too small is bad if the game is too short. Too large is also not good if they are not fully hooked...so keep it in the middle and keep an eye that the game is makeable around 5-10 minutes.
  • Not too hard and not too easy: Sometimes you have players who love hardcore platforming and often you have not for example. Maybe you can just try that the first levels are easier makeable and then try to raise the difficult.
  • Build your game somemtimes: More a Unity tip is too build your game from time to time to see if it work that way. Often WebGL has issues.
  • Focus yourself with streaming: Sometimes it is helpful to stream your development on twitch so that you can not so easily be distracted.
  • Template Project: Get your tools and a small template project ready before the jam start (this is allowed as you can use a base codebase if it is your own).
  • Music: If you are not great musican like me and if you don't make it to compo (maybe you need more time or you are in a small team) it is ok to use music from opengamearg.org or other resources which allows you to use it. You need to opt out but it makes the whole game feel better which gives better rates on the other categories if the music is not shit.
  • Use a new gamengine...not: Well that is also an advice from many veterans. Use the tools you know best. If you need to learn it would take much longer. BUT: it is also a good oportunity to learn this new engine. So if you goal is not to get good ratings but to force yourself to learn new tools - go for it. The motivation for it is awesome.

At least i wish you all a happy gamejam !

Collector!

Gonna catch them...all ? :D

Catlosia - It was a harder jam than i expected.

When you start a jam you often get ideas. I didnt had a really good idea - some small ideas but nothing that popped into my head and obsessed me with it. However i got some side perks from my family: - a sambal oleg glas - a image of special cat - a cat who puke

Well all this stuff is in the game. So what is this game about ?

Simple to tell is you are a small white cat who eats all kinds of stuff. You ask collector master cat who gives you quests. When you finished these quests you get a sticker for your album.

Simple as it sounds it might be tricky - you are able to just give the cat a part of the quest and some items are filling the puke bar faster then others.

To be honest: it is not my best game but it is a small game about cats. The SFX i did with my voice and audacity :D

If you wanna play it here it would be nice - i am preparing a HTML5 version "soon" (i have some issues with the healthbar - drawimagestrechted seemed to be bugged on html5). But for now you can only play on windows. Sorry for that.

Praise the Masercat!

First: thank you for your votes. I love to get feedback. cat_idle.gif

Second what i want to tell you:

LDJam is a full process of making games

What i really like about this is that you have a full process. - come up with a good idea - make a game plan, GDD - development cycle - publish - AND: advertisement your game to get votes

So the last part is about like this post. Also you get feedback. Some games are great, some games are not. Some games will become a full release - but most of them not. And thats ok. It is about creativity.

So as that said - only some days left so just play my game hehe

Catlosia - Play it now!

Results are in! Thank you :)

I am really satisfied with this results (as i didnt expected that for this kind of game :)).

It was a harder jam this time with a game idea that was okish. But adding more collection stuff made fun and i did some new stuff i didn't tried out before so it was definetly worth it.

See you next time (hopefully when mike got a stable income and if he is well).
