Ludum Dare 47

I am in

Started 15 hours late, but finally have the basic concept working. The water evaporating from a lake, forming clouds and raining down on earth. Just need to add the last step to close the loop - the player to transfer the water back into the lake before it dries out. If I have time, I may even redraw the ugly-ass graphics. But that's the plan for tomorrow.

Core mechanics done

Just need to add some sound and some kind of main menu and polish the difficulty a little, and we should be good to go. But now, it's time for lunch, yay!

Psyched for LD48

This will be my 2nd Ludum Dare and I am very excited about it. My son was born since LD47 so I am a little worried that I won't have a lot of time during the weekend. Anyway, I will try to participate even if I'll have just a few hours.

Ludum Dare 48

Time is running against me

This Ludum Dare couldn't be at a worse time. The COVID-19 restrictions are allowing me to see my parents for the first time in 4 months the same weekend. And nothing's more important than family. I hope I'll be able to enter the Jam at least, because my participation in the Compo seems impossible. Unless I can somehow make a game in 4 hours on Saturday morning... It does sound like a challenge though :-)

Jam it is

So, I just layed out my battle plan and it doesn't look good :-/ I'd only have 8 hours available if I wanted to do Compo... That would be insane. So I'll try to do most of the implementation during these 8 hours and than spend Monday evening finalizing the art and trying to do some sfx and music. Doing the Jam will give me additional 11 hours, providing my wife and kid will be tolerant enough to let me work the whole evening :-D

LD starts at 3 AM where I am, so I have set my alarm for 5 AM. Hopefully, I will be able to get at least 4-5 hours of sleep until then.

Unfathomable Depths

As I have a very limited time this weekend, I went with the first idea that came to my mind - going deeper and deeper into the depths of the ocean. So there is a bathysphere going down to the unfathomable depths, killing everything dangerous with it's laser beam :-)

Yes, my plan was to work on the game mechanics during the weekend and then on the art on Monday, but I just can't do anything with placeholders. So I created my first pixel art ever and here's the result:

Today's progress

It's not much but it's honest work.

Too bad I didn't have time to finish this today, but I guess it's better to submit a complete game to the jam than something half-baked into the compo.

Done!

Just published my rougelite :-) Haven't had much time for balancing, but will definitely keep working on this after this. But now, I am going to have long sleep :-)

HTML version available at last!

I was finally able to get the WebGL version to work. For people struggling with the same problem, you have to disable compression in Unity -> Player settings -> WebGL -> Publishing settings. With compression enabled, the loader always stopped at 90 %.

I also had to enable https for my server for the online leaderboards to work.

Created new thumbnail image for my game, what do you think?

Just started learning pixel art during the jam to make this game: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/48/the-unfathomable

If you look at it from a distance and/or squint your eyes, it's not so bad I think :-D UnfathomableSplash.png

Working on post-jam version

Currently working on post-jam version of my game The Unfathomable. I am still in the process of learning pixel art and was not very satisfied with the jam version visuals which I created as my first pixel art ever :-)

So I am reworking all the sprites.

I have also overhauled enemy behaviour, now enemies will only come after you if you get close to them and then will pursue you only for a certain distance. This will bring additional tactical element in the game.

I will probably overahul the upgrade system as well, so the upgrades you make are persistent between sessions and you don't have to pick up the same upgrades every time.

Lastly, I will add a boss squid or some other giant sea monster that you'd have to fight when you reach the bottom of the trench.

Really a lot of work in front of me to make this into a game that you can enjoy longer than just a couple of minutes.

In the meantime, please play and rate the jam version of the game: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/48/the-unfathomable
