Ludum Dare 38 - Day 1

Originally posted on http://unitynoob.com/posts/ludum-dare-38-day-1.html

So, another Ludum Dare, eh?!?

The theme for LD38 is Small World. I had a number of ideas, which all centered around being in a confined space (go figure) in a turn based world.

I considered a small Roguelike, we you move inside a tiny dungeon, avoiding monsters and traps, but I felt that although small, did not fit the theme well. Besides, I am already making a game similar to that. Next, I thought of a small platformer, where each level floated in space, and you had to find a teleporter on each world, which would take you to the next world. I also thought of a game where you were on an island, and also a pathfinding game, but I did not get much inspiration from those.

I have finally settled on a simple game where you land on a Small planetoid (World) and must mine the area to find the Resources for your next order. Along the way you, you must avoid the different Alien lifeforms that are trying to stop you.

I think what will be interesting about this game, is the mechanics I plan to add. For example, when mining for resources, you can only mine to the left or right of your position. You pickup resources by walking on them, but you can only hold one at a time. You can also drop the current resource you have to the left or right of you. You can also swap resources, that is, if you drop an item to the left, and there is already something there, you will then get the item that was there, and the item you had will be dropped.

There will also be some simple pickups. The first, is the good old extra life. Next, is a Ice Block, dropping this on a Alien will freeze them for 5 turns. You can also find explosives, dropping these on aliens will push them at least 5 tiles away from you. Explosives are also great for blowing up obstacles on the World, which you might need to do in order to explore other areas.

Once you have collected the resources for your order, you can return to your ship, which completes the level. You then move onto the next level.

So thats all I have for now. I will start refining the game as I start coding.

Till tomorrow.

My Game Is Done - GHOST JOB

This one went to the wire. I will do a full post mortem in a day or so. I am very happy with the game, especially because EVERYTHING, including Music was done by me.

The Game is a mix of Turn Based and some kind of Reverse Horror. Although, I am not sure how Scary it is. You play a Ghost hired to get rid of Visitors to another Ghosts home. you have a certain amount of Turns to complete the Level. You have different Scares/Haunts at your disposal (only 4 that work) and use them to Scare the visitors. Each visitor has a certain amount of courage, when they are out of courage, they fly out of there!

Have fun playing, and please leave feedback.

Thanks.

We Are In

For this Ludum Dare I have decided to use the Godot Engine. I have been playing around with Godot for some time now and I want to see how it performs during a Game Jam. I have been using Unity "forever", but of late I have found the Engine to be full of "bloat", and I am still underwhelmed with the Performance of WebGL, not to mention that it still takes well over 10 minutes to make a build for WebGL. I am really looking forward to this Jam.

Confusion on Scoring

At the risk of sounding like I am complaining. I am seeing a pattern with a number of games where they had a very low number of ratings (under 30), yet they scored in the top 20% for many of their categories, and thus ended up with a higher overall score. It seems like some of us who have more people play (over 60) had a lower mean score, and thus were rated lower.

Again, not trying to complain but it seem like there is a penalty for advertising and getting more people to rate your game.

Maybe I am missing something in how it is scored? Is there a post that explains it?

Thanks all.

I Am In

Looking forward to this weekend, and I hope the Theme will allow for a Christmas type of game. As always, I will wait to see if I will do the Jam or Compo. I am very excited that my son is going to join this time and build his own game. Wish @gamingvoidplayz. Good Luck to everyone!

Cheers!

Themes Selection

I think we need to limit everyone to ONE theme from now on. Going through 6000+ themes is near impossible. There are many that are duplicates and should have been filtered out already.

Happy With Themes

I am very pleased to see so many One and Two Word themes this time. I think these are much better than phrases and lead to more creativity. I also saw NO themes related to COVID-19 or DEATH which was nice as well. So GOOD JOB slaying the bad themes everyone!

Now, time to start preparing.

Yes!

I am really going to try and reduce the normal scope creep I get in my games this time around. I really like the themes I am seeing so far. Can't wait to play everyone's creations next week.
