LD33

I’m In!

Here for my first LD! I always miss these things, so I’m excited to try it out!

Programming: LibGDX

Art: Graphics Gale

SFX: sfxr

Music: FL Studio

Let’s do this everyone!

LD35

I’m In!

I’m currently studying abroad in Japan, so this is going to be a little weird for me, but how can I turn down an LD?

This will be my second LD since I missed the last one. The last time I did the compo I got 22nd place with SPACE JUNK. Hopefully I’ll do better this time, I’m going to try Game Maker this time around instead of Java/LibGDX I think.

My loadout for this LD:

  • Language/Engine: Game Maker
  • Art: GraphicsGale
  • Music: FL Studio
  • SFX: FL Studio and sfxr

Good luck everybody!

Metal-ish Music?

Turns out I have a sound cloud that’s about 5 years old! I spent an hour or so putting together some okay music. My game is about going fast so I wanted music that reflected that.. Tried to go for a sort of.. game-ish metal thing? I’m not really a big metal fan but I thought it would be appropriate. Let me know what you think!

LD35 Games to Love and Learn

Played a good few games so far, and there are a handful that stick out in terms of innovation and polish. If you are looking for good games to play or to learn a few new innovative design tricks, these are definitely for you. Hopefully some of them get developed further:

PERMUTATE by TravisChen

PERMUTATE is an interesting look into movement design and how it can shape a game. I would really like to see a game like this developed further. There are a lot of directions and combinations you can take puzzle creation with such a unique movement system!

55 Days by V4lesti

55 Days is a neat little tycoon-like puzzle game. The game feels like it is built for mobile, and it runs on ActionScript I believe, but it is by no means a cheap game. This game is a very polished and soothing experience. If you are looking for a way to kill some time, this is your answer. I could definitely see a game like this selling well on the mobile/HTML5 market.

Soothsayer Simulator 2016 by iceburg7

I know the name and look of the screenshot would suggest that it isn’t an amazing design test, but it is. A very creative venture on the part of iceburg7. I won’t say more about this in fear of spoiling it!

Zombies and RVs

zombies.gif

It's been about 8 hours of work and I've got the basics in there. Gameplay is insanely fun! Something about platforming on top of moving RVs and shooting zombies really gets me haha. If you're curious about the way it plays out, think Clustertruck meets Nuclear Throne? That's how it feels to me anyhow.

Here's the tools I'm using too, since I didn't do an IM IN post: - Unity w/ C# - The engine, using c# because it's better than JS :stuckouttongue: - Pyxel Edit - Sprites and anims are done in here, it reminds me a lot of the game maker shortcuts so I love it. - FL Studio - Easiest way to make music on Windows imo - SFXR - Easiest way to cheat my way out of sound effects imo

For funsies here's the concept of the RVs in practice before the zombies, it might show the RV play a little better: convoy.gif

Feel free to follow me on Twitter (@pixelgriffin) for more up-to-date info or to ask any Qs.

Zombies and RVs

tinyrun-min.gif Well unfortunately you can't post gifs larger than a few MB, so you can find a nicer GIF here

Finished up the core gameplay, juiced it up a little, and made an intro/outro. It's not great but it's there. Got some good music going, and managed to make some good SFX this time around!

It plays like a roguelike with a platforming challenge (or at least that's what I want lol).

In true rogue-like fashion I've added modifiers you can buy with your gas at each level interval. Here's what it looks like: hey there playboy what are you doing hovering over this here image

Submission Hour

Anyone know if LD still does the submission hour?

Zombies and RVs

ld39.gif Hey Folks my compo entry is "done" and available here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/zombies-and-rvs!

Zombies and RVs is a mashup of fast paced dynamic physics based platforming and rogue-like survival elements. It's packed full of RV hopping zombie shooting goodness!

:bangbang:Featuring: - Hand-crafted random levels - Multiple player upgrades - Dynamic physics system - Music/audio tracks - Juice - Linux & Mac support (hopefully, untested)

Ratings are greatly appreciated and feedback is gold! I'll probably be posting a post mortem in a week or so, covering how it was dealing with Unity's 2D physics and the workflow of Pyxel Edit to Unity.

Thanks

Favorite Games Thus Far~

Hey guys, I've been playing games on and off Twitch and have found some real gems I think everyone should take a moment to play! They're in no particular order but deserve lots of attention:

:battery:Hyper Battery Girl

By #deke

HyperBatteryGirl.png An incredibly solid twitch platformer that has some very creative usage of a power bar. As a battery, you can run across little metal chargers to increase your power that you can expend with super jumps that are necessary to clear certain gaps. Plays a lot like Super Meatboy. If you're into platforming DO NOT MISS THIS.

:zap:Defender of The Energy

By @BesSlaaneshi, @MagicSpore, and @Tokatsu

DefenderOfTheEnergy.png Defender of The Energy is a wave-based shooter that feels very mechanically solid. As the timer ticks forward the rate at which enemies spawn increases and they start to pose a more significant problem. Interesting mechanics like enemies stealing your energy allows you to manage what energy balls you collect and which you leave in order to properly kite enemies to maximize your ability to survive.

:flag_us:Be The President

By @MrSerp (PhyNXT)

BeThePresident.png Be The President is a quirky simulator-like game where you take on the role of the president. Although the impact of your work isn't entirely clear the game itself is full of great jokes and funny mechanics. If you're looking for a great laugh, this is your game.

LD39_Gameplay.png If you haven't had a chance to see my game as well, I encourage people to try it out! It's a fast paced physics based platformer with a roguelike shooter aspects! Enjoy Zombies and RVs now~
