My first jam, finally!

I have been following my friends’ progress in several of the latest ludum dares, but never gotten the chance to participate until now.

Currently studying the final year of my master in game and software engineering, I’m dying to start this jam now, and I hope I can finish something :)

In this compo, I hope to work out an idea based around music, since I love composing music.

Tools:
Programming/Editor: Unity
Graphics: Paint.NET, (pyxelEdit if I need pixel art)
Audio: FL Studio (for music), audacity, (sfxr for sound effects if I do chip style)
Version Control: TortoiseHg

My last advice for everyone would be to make sure you use version control frequently.

Thanks, and good luck to everyone! Let’s have a great compo :)

You only get one masterpiece

So here’s the story of polytonia:

Maestro,

The emperor wishes to order a royal symphony from you.
This is your only chance, so you must not fail him.
Make sure to deliver a masterpiece.

The emperor must not be disappointed…
There will be only one masterpiece.

Journey through music to finish the masterpiece!

Polytonia
Use your great sense of timing to progress the music. Don’t get a single key wrong as you keep on adding new instruments.
Finish a phrase of notes flawlessly to progress on to the next channel, and get rewarded by the happy musical harmonies!

Finish the masterpiece to win the acceptance of yours majesty. This is your only chance to impress the musical ears of Vienna!

Demo available, 1st day progress.

I’m really happy with how this concept turns out so far – everything is about music, and as you keep on playing you unlock new instruments.

Finalize your masterpiece to impress the emperor. Are you ready?

Try the demo I got so far at:

I welcome all feedback highly, and I’ll work hard to polish this and add more content tomorrow. Please tell me any problems you run into :)

Good luck with the second day everyone!

My final 7 steps to success

Currently around 70% finished. Check out the demo if you want to see

Step 1: Sleep to get energy to do the other steps!

Step 2: Disable target momentarily when hitting a wrong key.

Step 3: Polish by adding more visual feedback and basic tutorial elements.

Step 4: Title Screen

Step 5: Basic Credits Screen

Step 6: Composing more tracks for the theme music – in Polytonia, success is all about playing music with great timing skills.

(optional) Step 7: Polish graphics further.

OMG, happy surprise

I was just going home from the ludum battle station at my office, and suddenly an unopened bottle of coke is in my pocket. I was so much into the coding that I forgot to drink it when I had my lunch.

A happy morning awaiting tomorrow! Good night everyone 😀

Demo Up now, almost finished!

I have uploaded a new demo, and would love to get any feedback.

Try the Demo

Polytonia Music is all about timing your clicks to progress the music. Every successful click contributes to a new melody. Finish each melody flawlessly to build a masterpiece!

New in this demo is the title screen, polished visual feedback, improved game mechanics and better guidance for new players, among others.

Polytonia Gameplay

Basically finished, and polished

For being my first ludum dare ever, I’m really happy to say that my game is now finished and polished with title screen, credits and many animating visual feedback (pretty satisfying from a programmer’s perspective, hehe).

I will now use the last time to add more content, which means composing many tracks for the sound track. Since in Polytonia, playing the game is all about playing the music :)

Below is a screenshot of the new GUI style. There is also a credits screen and an ending, but you’ll have to play the demo to see that :)

Looking forward to try all other games later on!!

Good luck with the last few hours everyone, use your time well and have a nice time :)

Polytonia In-game GUI

Just like playing an instrument :o

So, in polytonia, you must hit all the notes with right timing to finish melodies progressing to build the final song.

I just realized now that this is surprisingly similar to learning a real instrument. I noticed from friends playing the game that they needed to the more difficult melodies over and over again, learning it better and better each time as it gets into the muscle memory. And just like when practicing a real instrument they would pend between periods of getting most notes right and periods of failing a lot.

If you’re not convinced, just try to play the game one more time after you finally pass it for the first time. You’ll be surprised at how much easier it is. That’s your muscle memory, and it will get stronger over time. And even more, try playing it again a few days later and you’ll notice you forgot it slightly, but repeat it a few times and you’ll remember it all again. For a much longer time. This is the essence of learning, and I was surprised to see it right here in my ludum dare entry.

Game Live on Kongregate

Thanks to fellow Ludum Dare:ers I got the idea to upload the game to kongregate. This gives great possibilities, and I hope to integrate their API for various social features later on.

You can find it at:

Hey, I’m also interested in that. Could you elaborate a bit on the process? Is this now basically just hosted there, or did you have to get accepted? Is it monetized in some way? Is there a way for you to already see some statistics, like pageviews and the likes?

Timelapse Polytonia Music

Here’s a timelapse of the whole compo, 60 seconds per frame.

And here’s the result:

Play Polytonia

The music you hear is the actual song you “compose” as you take the role of Maestro the composer, in Polytonia.

All feedback is greatly welcome, and will be useful when I keep on developing this later on!

Soundtrack Download Added!

Thanks everyone for such great comments on the soundtrack. Many of you said that the game was pretty hard, and I’m glad that the soundtrack inspired you to finish the composing of your first masterpiece!

Now you can download the soundtrack and keep on listening at any time, just check out my compo entry page to get it!

Timing Bug Fix – Polytonia

There was previously a timing bug in Polytonia causing the notes you play to be out of sync from the music you hear on some computers.

Since polytonia is all about playing music through good timing, this issue made the game hard to play for everyone affected.

This is now fixed! Try out the new version at:

Let there be awesomeness! I’m in!

I’m in, preparing for my 2nd ludum dare.

It will be hard to top my 4th place in the audio category last time, but I’ll work hard to make every hour count!

This time I will use the pomodoro work method to enforce regular breaks, which I have found effective to avoid getting stuck on the same problem for a long time.

I will happily take part of the real world gathering in Lund, Sweden, at Sony’s office. So let’s rock their office!

These are my tools:

  • Overall dev: unity 3D,  c#, VS2012
  • Music: FL studio / musagi, audacity
  • Sound FX: FL Studio, sfxr, audacity
  • Graphics: pyxel edit, Paint.NET
  • Workflow: clockwork tomato, good ol’ pen and paper, Google docs, COFFEEEEE!
  • Version control: bitbucket, tortoiseHG
  • “Promo”: chronolapse, windows movie maker, a happy and modest attitude :)

The game will likely involve android and the smartwatch 2.

Good luck everyone and remember to have fun!! 😀

Wave power for the people!

Have been experimenting with the wave equation in 2D, and I’m really happy with how it turns out!

Wave physics

So my concept is that you generate electricity by creating waves. The supplied power will in turn generate “power tokens” for which you can buy both more generators and the no. 1 wave generator, Oscill-o-matic™ to help you generate even more power.

Unlock new wave gadgets and place them wisely to achieve world dominating power generation, like never seen before!

But hurry up.. don’t let your friends beat you to it!!
