Another First Timer

Hello everyone. I will be participating in the jam here in Omaha, Nebraska at CAMP coworking .

I will be using Unity 3.5 + 2D toolkit (yes, my entry will be jam only), Photoshop for art assets.

This may change if I’m asked to join others, my strengths are more on the art end of things.

Very excited, cramming Unity API knowledge tonight and tomorrow afternoon in preparation, flying in the face of all recommendations to go with something you know, but I don’t really know much else and Unity seems to have everything I need to make the games I want to make. So finished mini-game or not, looking forward to an awesome learning experience.

Changing directions

Having no internet access for 3 hours prior to the jam beginning sabotaged my Unity tutorial cramming efforts. Doing a flixel game now, which I should have just done to begin with.

Doing something microscopic/subcellular, the actual theme is still a bit hazy.  Right now its an arena shooter with boxes.

Will post screenshots in a bit.

Rybar enters again, will finish game this time!

I’m in for the jam (not compo) , no jam site in Omaha unfortunately :( but I will be participating from home. I’m psyched!

Tools:

Unity 3.5 + 2d Toolkit (unless someone out there has a suggestion for something free/open source that works well enough)

Photoshop

BFXR for bleeps and asplodes

SunVox for music -if I get there

Another goal I’ve set for this jam is to record my progress better/post here at least twice during the jam.  Good luck everyone, happy game making!

Throwing in the towel.

I’m admitting defeat this time.  Have to admit, didn’t care for the theme.  I think a lot of people didn’t like the theme.  The problem isn’t coming up with great ideas to fit ‘Evolution’, its that 95% of those ideas are way too ambitious for a 48-hour project.  They’re either a content-sinkhole or require some serious programming for things like mutation/adaptation etc.  I guess I was paralyzed by trying to come up with something feasible that was still a really good fit for the theme, when what I should have done is just make a game I wanted to make and worry about making the theme fit after.   In addition to being frustrated/uninspired this time around was trying to do this from home with family responsibilites, kids whining “Why are you on the computer for so long Daddy???”.   Next time I’ll be sure to lock myself away at the office or hopefully there’s a jam site so I can actually do this.

WIP HTML5+Phaser+three boilerplate

Here’s my boilerplate that I’ll work on fleshing out a bit more before jam time.

https://github.com/Rybar/ld35boiler

It features a working menu, basic play and game over states.

three.js might not make the cut, but I REALLY want to try out throwing some 3d elements into a 2d game.

I'm in!

Cleared my schedule for the weekend! Using the same retro-pixel lib I used for JS13K entry Greeble and Rotoblaster, even if I don't get a game out, hoping to refine the library a bit before js13k this year. :)
