Going to try to do full motion capture for the compo

IMG_0404.jpg

I wanted do something different for LD48, so I set up a full mocap studio in my living room. I'm using IPIsoft mocap software with 6 PS3 Eye cameras.

I finished setting up the cameras just before the compo started, so I didn't have time to really test it out. This type of mocap can work really well but it requires ideal conditions. I'm not sure if my living room has enough space or light, but hopefully it'll be just good enough to produce some usable and only slightly janky animations.

I'm also going to try and make some 3D scanned assets (Iphone 12 LIDAR) because why not.

I probably won't have time to make much of a game since I'll be spending so much time making and polishing mocap data but I think it's worth a shot for the challenge alone.

Ever wanted to play as the Grim Reaper?

These villagers are so poorly animated that the grim reaper has been sent to collect their souls

spend a few minutes flying around pretending you're an ethereal being slicing people in half

I Made a Video Tutorial For Hymenoptera King

https://youtu.be/lesOmZZ8YEc

After receiving many complaints about the game being too confusing, I slapped together a pathetic attempt to try and explain it. Please let me know if the video actually teaches you how to play or if it leaves you with more questions than answers

Can anyone link to some VR-only LD games?

I saw a couple of VR only games earlier in the voting phase but I didn't have my Vive set up to try them. I'm finally ready to try them out but I forgot to save the links! If you made a VR game or remember the title of one you played, please comment the link or name so I can try them out and give them some ratings before the end of voting Thanks!

Bad timing for a hurricane

Hurricane Ian is almost a category 5 and it looks like it's going to end up causing a lot of damage. If you're in its path, take this thing seriously and evacuate if necessary. My county seemed to make it through the hurricane unscathed, but last night there were reports of tornadoes touching down and causing damage all over the place.

Hopefully we make it through this with as little damage as possible (and with power and internet to participate in LD51 of course)

Using a real light gun to play our game!

https://youtu.be/zCVw8gG9zRk

We made an on-rails light gun game but didn't own a light gun. After finally getting our hands on one (retroshooter) we recorded a playthrough of our post jam levels. The game is waaaaay more fun this way than with a mouse lol

We motion captured our 4 year old nephew for our game!

output.gif

We used Freemocap with 5 cameras to create the motion capture data, manually cleaned it up in Blender, and used the motion matching gem in O3DE to set up the character controller. It came out surprisingly good and it feels like you're controlling a 4 year old alien

The animations could have definitely used some more cleanup and better retargeting as some of them stretch out the shoulders, or have the arms briefly clipping through the body or bending backwards. But I think its acceptable game jam quality.

The enemy animations on the other hand came out pretty bad. We were strapped for time as we originally planned to release the game for the jam so we didn't record enough animations for the enemy. Due to how motion matching works, this made the final result look pretty bad since there isn't enough coverage for their capsules full range of motion. There's also general jankiness and the occasional T-pose.

Overall I am very impressed that this actually worked, and we would have actually met the jam deadline if it weren't for a few last minute build issues that pushed us past the deadline. The time we took to polish it up for the Extra category was worth it IMO as the game is actually kinda fun now.
