Silly Maze Game [Working Title]

I’ve decided to enter my first LD, we’ll see what it brings.  So far I’ve got a quite playable bouncing ball that’s being chased by an autoscroll.  Next is to add traps and special kinds of tile.

Here’s a shot.  There will be a deadly wall of spikes on the left…

Love the aesthetics. They are so superflat.

Oh shit, I didn’t realise you were entering this! This is looking fantastic so far, keep going!

Silly Maze Game: Update 1

Making some progress, there’s collapsing squares now and buttons which will open doors.  Need spikes!

superflat’s Balls Of Legend [Mac / PC] FIXED!

Balls Of Legend [Mac / PC Download]

Edit: Fixed a .zip error which stopped it from loading on PC.

Well here it is!  A game of balance.  Not much to say except get to the end if you can… Use the arrow keys to control the glass ball.  Post your orb scores in the comments if you like.  Think this might translate over to iPhone quite nicely.  There’s only one long level at the moment.  I’ll definitely add more after the compo.

Bed time, was great fun.  See you next time!

I’m sorry. The Windows build doesn’t work for me. :( After I press space to start, the screen flashes a few times and then it quits.

Ack, the zip won’t extract. It says there are already files with the same names no matter where I put it and then breaks.

Hmm I had all kinds of worries with the packaging… But I’m at work now and successfully downloaded on PC and played… Maybe you could try downloading again?

Loved it , made it to the end!

I love the graphics and sound effects, but I don’t like the perspective, because often I can’t see the ball behind a wall. You should change it from diagonal to nearly top-down.

Also, generating levels procedurally would be cool.

It’s an interesting point and I did consider it… I quite enjoy the fact that certain passages are hidden though, I think that’s part of the challenge, just dealing with the orthogonal prespective. Also from a higher p.o.v. you’d see much less ball bounce, which might be a different type of problem.

okay, i played it too the end. i don’t know if i liked the bouncing sound too much. very nicely polished for an impromptu weekend game.

superflat’s Balls Of Legend: Postmortem

I suppose the thing I’m most happy with is that it the first compo I’ve entered which wasn’t a massive crunch to get in on the deadline.  I was enjoying a nice cup of tea by 10:30pm.  Heres are some fun development facts:

– The game took about 12 hours.

– I used Photoshop and Logic Pro.

– I wrote it in BlitzMax with lashings of OpenGL.

– It formed by ripping apart the level editor for my iPhone game, which also uses the same orthogonal perspective.

– The graphics were based on another game concept I’ve currently shelved, a Rez-at-light-speed interactive music game called ‘Tempo’.

– I don’t like the bounce sound either.  Wish I’d spent more time on it.

– I have loads of ideas to expand on it, from springs that fire you down corridors to one-way floors, switches and doors, powerups that enable you to open up new paths, crushers and electric fences you have to jump.

– I’m keen to try it on the iPhone, where the tilt determines the angle of your next bounce.

– I’m especially keen on trying a two-four player mode, which could be both co-operative and competitive (both bounce on two switches to open one door, but the first through gets the best loot!)

Anyway, thanks for having me Ludum Dare.  I’m sure I’ll enter again sometime.  And post food pics / timelapse shots which I had no idea about until after I’d finished!

cave4

Ok here’s how it looks in-game, but there’s no animation yet.  Sloooow progress!

First rule of 48 hour game compos is…

Fire and forget!  Don’t go back and touch things up!

Which I really ought not to be doing…  But anyway finally got a look I’m kinda happy with, need to go in and add all the animation now.  Hoping to get walk and attack cycles done by bed, then tomorrow morning add in the enemy I have planned, and get it running.  It’s gonna use one of the many variants of the Soundless Mountain II engine… I need to figure out which as they all have slightly different sets of features…

Second that. Artwork rocks :)

A little behind schedule… And noodles.

Good afternoon fellow competitors! Here was my lunch:

cavestory2

I had the Shin Ramen with spring onion, my wife had a steaming bowl of udon with a raw egg. See if you can spot the GC, DC, PS2, PS3 and TE Fighting Stick! Oh and that’s BlitzMax running there.

ingame1

This is today’s progress so far. You can see my lighting system is up and running, and the map and walk animation… But still no baddie or combat animations. I’m starting to doubt I can finish this, but I’ll keep plodding on!

The basic idea shown by your screenshot seems like the one I’m going for. I’m just using straight SDL, so mine won’t look quite so good :)

You have to burn the zombie…

ingame2

Well this is all I have so far: you, a zombie, and torch to hit it with. I have nice flame effects going on, all hand animated.

I don’t know if I’ll have enough to enter this with, oh well, it’s bee fun drawing it all.

Here was my dinner, hand-made sushi from Kana…

Gorgeous pixel art!

Claustrophobia

Claustrophobia is actually a complete game.

You are trapped in a cave with no exits, there are immortal creatures surrounding you who wish to eat your flesh. You may choose to survive a little longer, by fending them off with your flaming torch, but you’re only prolonging the inevitable.

I find it quite scary.

ingame4

I have it all finished to a degree I’m comfortable with, the only problem is creating an executable – it would probably take a good while to package, as I’d have to remove a lot of stuff from the graphics and sound code (which load in assets from Soundless Mountain – breaking the rules of the compo. even though they’re not used – it’s always fiddly and takes a few false starts – and it’s already past my bedtime!)

So, sorry to disappoint those who were interested. I’ll try and post the finished thing on my blog in a few days. Need to sleep now!

Ye I love the art too =)

Post mortem of a dead entry.

ingame4

Well I never made it to submission, but I’m really glad I entered as it’s possibly opened up a major door for me…

It’s very close to what I had in mind for my first chapter of Amnesia Stories, the ‘prequels’ to Amnesia (see my blog), a game I may never get round to making. In fact, the boy looks like a young Yuuki, the main character, and so this may well become the first chapter of said prequels. I think I’ve got something a little special, atmosphere-wise, and it’s a great template for the guaging exactly how long it would take to put a scenario together for AS.

So if you’re interested in 2D survival horror, keep an eye on my blog in the coming months, as there may be goodness contained therein.

Thanks for having me, Ludum Dare!

Psychic Prison Break

Here’s a very ridiculous attempt. It’s got some odd ideas that may or may not work depending on dialogue, which I’m leaving ’till tomorrow.

Here’s what I got…

Lovely graphics! Those gray tones and pixel font bring to mind old handhelds, and fit the theme perfectly :)

edit* looks awesome though, hope it gets faster so I can play it!

I finished my second LD out of three..

This is the first ever finished game to be written entirely in HAL, the editor / scripting language I’ve been working on for six years. The project really helped me see what I need to do to improve the language and tool, so for that it’s been invaluable. I’m reasonably happy with how quicky I could get new content in with it.

Here’s a screenie, to whet your appetite – would love to get your feedback over on the submission page!

Loving the color palette there. 😀

I have world generation!

Still not sure if I’m gonna do colour cycling, or stick with one. Time could be better spent on the mechanics. Anyway, at least I’ve got an idea what happens now in it now…
