LD 39

First Attempt to pixel art (Also I'm in for LD39 Compo)

Hi, I wanted to show case my first attempt to make pixel art. This was done using aseprite, a fun little tool to create pixel art

worker.PNG

Also, I wanted to take this moment to ask the following: Do we have to make literally everything during the event? The rules states "You’re free to start with any base-code you may have." For example, the pixel art I just made, is this fine? Or is this strictly restricted to code only? This is my first event so I just want to make sure I get this right.

Furthermore, here is a little bit about my entry:

Looking forward to participate in this event!

Progress of Day 1

This is Hackerman, A game about being a hacker/burglar

Unfortunately, on your current heist, you forgot your power cords, and your battery is draining fast. So you must complete your evil schemes and get out before you run out of powers

I have set up some of the core mechanics. This took much longer than I have anticipated. This is due to the fact that I am not very experienced with game dev. Also, people's current progress on twitter and here is very overwhelming compared to mine :/

Nonetheless, I am satisfied with my current code. - I have interactive switches that can unlock doors and close lights. - Note that the light opens by itself. - If you step on the light, a guard can see you, and he will chase you until he looses you out of sight. - The guards can freely roam my world. - *I also have doors that actually works :^) *

Here is a GIF of my current game (There are no sprites done for this game. Tomorrow I will start spriting) hackerman.gif

If you would like to see more of my development for this game. You can watch my live stream of the entire thing. The live stream is on for the entire event right here

I must not go to bed for it is 3:30am here.

LD 40

#LD40Compo - I'm in

This will be my second participation for this event. I am bringing along things that I have learned from the last event.

I am considering switching from GMS2 to Unity. This is in order to experiment different tools.

I will probably keep making pixel arts, considering how well it went last time :-)

Oh and my theme suggestions are: - Network - Automation - Collectibles

I wish you all a good flow of productivity!

From Hackerman, I present you Snowman!

No sprites have been done yet, the looks of what you see is only temporary

snowman.gif

You are a snowman in a forest fire, you burn yourself to melt ice and burn trees so that you may progress in the game. You can also free your snowman buddies on the way in order to acquire some points :) (and being a good citizen of course) The more fire you have, the faster your melt away but the faster you get to burn other things as well

So far, I feel like I have a good 85% of my game mechanics setup. And with that I will crash to bed. Only thing left to do tomorrow is Level design, sound design, art design (The creative aspect of the game)

I hope all of you are having a good compo/jam!

Snowman after 24+ hours through LD40

Sprites have been added, a few levels, i try not to reveal much because there are secrets to discover in this game :^) Sprites have been added

I would love to submit a gif to show you all my game, but i can't seem to submit anything longer than 8 seconds. Due to the fact that 8 seconds seems insufficient for me. I present you this image from within the game :)

On that note, I need to get some rest, stay strong everyone, compo is almost over!

LD 41

I'm in for Ludum Dare 41!

This will be my 3rd participation into this event. I have learned much along the way and I hope it will reflect in my next creation!

Good luck to all and I'm looking forward to play your games!!

Persistence is key

Hello there, I thought I'd share my story about game jams!

Since I was very young, I was obsessed watching others via social platforms doing their entry for various game jams. I've always dreamed that one day I will be participating to such events. Yet as time passed by, it seems no opportunity came to me where I was encouraged to assist to these events.

It was only on a hot summer, 4 weeks before LD39 that I have decided that I will participate in the game jam! At the time, I only had a college diploma in computer science and no prior knowledge whatsoever in game design, making art, programming games and making sounds/music (actually I used to play the piano a lot as a kid).

I tried absorbing as much information as I could. For art, I started drawing one canvas per day and try to participate to events like Pixel Dailies. My first drawing were terrible. I kept trying until I was able to express an idea on paper.

I picked up game maker studio (Unity did not cross my mind at the time) and I have practiced, did all the tutorials and free lessons I could get my hands on until I got the hang of the basics.

Here is some early samples of my drawings, I made some small canvas pixel art

Here are some of my best drawings before LD40, where I tried animations and larger scale projects: received_2250873031605070.gif

I even live streamed my first LD, not knowing whether I will even be able to do anything.
Turns out that not only the Ludum Dare went well, but the score was satisfying for a first entry as well. I felt proud, I felt that I should of not doubted myself all these years and pick it up, practice and try. Now that I'm on my way to my 3rd Ludum Dare, I always try to improve and do better than my past entries. There is always a stress that comes with it, a worry in the back of my head wondering if I'll live up to my past entries and not fail miserably.

Something I wish I would do more often, and this should go for all as well: Do not stop working on your project after a game jam. No more time management to think about, keep polishing it, by improving it and actually take a look back at your project you can really analyse your critical thinking and see where you could of done things better.

I have already wrote a few weeks earlier that I'm in for this Ludum Dare. This message is more for motivate and tell people who are hesitating to begin to actually go for it. Try, even if it doesn't work out, you will have learned something about it. I'm looking forward for this event once again, regardless of the theme, it's about making the best out of the given situation!

TL;DR: You learn much more by trying than by watching others. Do not wait for someone to tell you when to take the leap and start doing game jams. I waited, thinking I'll be ready some day. But what is ready? There is no such thing as ready, there is always room to improve for everyone. And we all started attending game jams more or less the same way: taking that leap and drown yourself into a sea of learning.

For those wondering what tools I use for game jams are the following: - Game Maker Studio 2 - Pyxel Edit - Fl Studio 12 - Bfxr

As previous game jams, I will be live streaming this event. Albeit, the stream isn't too exciting, since 48 hours definitely takes it's toll on me over time. You can find me on these platforms:

Best of success to all, I'm rooting for the whole lot of us!

Never stop learning!

2am, heavy mechanics nearing completion, need sleep!!

I present you SoccerTurn!

SoccerTurn.gif

I have decided to combine Soccer and Turn Based Games. The art is terrible, I have only added debugging art for now. I hope everyone else is doing well. It turns out I'm getting overwhelmed here at creating a soccer game, the mechanics and use cases are far more than I've anticipated!

Last stretch remaining for SoccerTurn

Approaching final stretch of Ludum Dare. I present you SoccerTurn with art this time! It still needs a little art love here and there, but so far so good. Coming up soon will be sounds and music after I rest my fried brain from the extensive debugging I did today!

Best of luck to all!

P.S., sorry for bad gif quality, Im only allowed to upload 4mb worth of gif :'(

LD 42

With only 24 hours, it's done!

I unfortunately had school exams the same day as the first half of LD42, so I surrendered my sleep for a full 24 hours and made my entry for LD42!

Behold is the aftermath! chaos compressed.gif

I'm happy of the outcome, this was my fourth entry and I keep tuning my knowledge and time management in game development. I'm looking forward to try other people's games, and also to hear what you think of my entry!

Here is mine: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/$100359

Have fun!

Post Compo Update

Hello all, for those who have played my game already, thank you so much, your comments were very helpful! With your comments I have tweaked a few things:

  • Your character can now double jump. No more getting easily stuck!
  • There are now arrows indicating you the next falling block. It let's you have a little head start for the next block!
  • For the 4K screen users, I have now made the game window resize-able, full-screen is also supported!

Once again, feel free to try it out, I'm looking forward to be hearing more reviews from all of you!

Match In A Bottle Timelapse

I gathered the screenshots from the making of my game and made a timelapse of it!

Also feel free to let me know what you think!!

LD 43

End of Day 2

Took forever to figure out the idea, but I think we got something great going. You must avoid getting hit by the laser, otherwise it's game over (not yet implemented!)

escape.gif

Less than a day remaining, so much left to do!

Good job for those who just finished the compo, we are excited to see your creations!

We started bringing in some art and better mechanics!

lobby.gif

The story is also settling: You are locked in the tallest sky scraper in the world with other people, and it's race to the top in order to avoid the laser of death. You may use any means to get there, including tossing people off in order to slow down the laser!

run_compressed.gif

For now, time to get a little more rest for the last sprint! Hang in there everyone!

First Ludum Dare 43 Jam Edition - FINISHED

I did not know what to expect out of this, it was fun! It's better in the sense that you get to stay in touch with people during the marathon and not cave-in and code intensively for 48 hours.

End of day 1

Not going to lie, I wasn't quite sure what to make. And I did end up doing something related to blood magic.

My game is about an arena survival game. You cast spells that cost you life to fight off waves of enemies. Art is not yet done, this is only temporary for me to get an idea of things.

I like to think that my entry is fairly simple. But for that reason, I will attempt to really take time and polish it up and provide a nice detailed experience!

day1.gif

Game Title: BloodBath | Outcome: An emotional rollercoaster

gif.gif

I was sort of careless when the theme was announced, I was feeling good that I got down the idea fairly quick, and that I had some base mechanics set up.

But as soon as I woke up the following day, I was feeling burnt out, and did not felt like my game idea was good anymore.

Finally, on the last day, everything turned around when I implemented the missing animations, sounds, balancing, game design. Everything was fitting nicely, I was happy I hanged in there till the very end and not give up! :^)

TL;DR Made game, idea sounds good at first, then bad. Did it anyways, end-result was worth

splash 16.png

Check it out! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/bloodbath

P.S Hang in there Jammers! Y'all still got about 20 hours to finish up! :)

Ludum Dare 45

Less than 16 hours, I gotta hurry!

So this LD was a rollercoaster for me. It started of with good idea, then I fell off, and lost motivation, only to pick it back up in the span of 24 hours. I'm back at it at full speed, I got most of the mechanic and art done, I only need to adjust difficulties and whatnot.

I present you my (game title is still TBD, I'm open to suggestions!) solo entry. You start with pretty much nothing to do, and you quickly ramp up in difficulty. This game is heavily based on well known rhythm games with an addition of some power ups and health restore. Ideally, you could spend your score to unlock other powers, but I'm not certain if I can fit that feature in the remainder of the time I have left

Next up, sounds and music!
