LD 41

I'm back Baby!

1.jpg

14 hours in, my team mates internet connection is dead - we are onto cellphone internet now (and he's uploading art :O ) Yep! This is Ludum Dare weekend all right!

Interface pretty much done - just need a story

So the team has agreed on the mechanics of what we are making, but we still need to come up with a good story. For anyone who writes stories, you're epic cause writing it hard!

At least the UI works.

Smartphone Game!!!

Heya Y'All :)

So LD was a blast, and I've enjoyed the feedback I've had so far. If you do try the game from our team, Can you leave me the following feedback?

What type of phone

Did you hold the phone in your hand and twist your body to look around?

Did you keep your body still and twist your hand to look around?

And if you're super awesome and you tuned the gyro (check the setting page, and the gyro setting are persistent so you can refresh between trys) what did oyu find worked best for your phone?

Thank you you awesome people! And I hope you all get many plays (I'm planning to do a couple of hours this weekend of play-through, Y'all have some awesome games I'm looking forward to playing :) )

Obligatory link to our game :P

LD 42

42 - Life, The Universe and Everything

So I just noticed it's LD42 - The Ultimate number! That might be totally from my cultural context, but looking on Wikipedia at the number 42, it's got a huge number of correlations to culture, history, mathmatics blah blah blah

Anyway: Since it's LD 42, Y'all might be as interested as me to read about the number https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/42_(number)

And anyone making a game, who put's an easter egg or some nod to the number 42, let me know so I can check your game out!

Finally, a feasible idea!

So this theme is pretty hard, but I think I've finally got an idea.

I dunno what other people think about sharing your ideas on here. But these are the ones I came up with (and am not using)

First: An ecological game, something where you're looking at the habitat of the Polar bear (because their environment is ice, snow and water. Pretty darn easy art me thinks.

Second: Text based action game, you're given scenarios and you have to avoid hitting things in the scenario. if the scenario plays out that you make the wrong choice too many times, you run out of space and hit a wall or something.

Third: Hehh.. actually just thought of this, isn't chess a game about running out of space? I mean really when your king runs out of space, your king is dead. That's chess. I guess that's a different kind of checkmate, where you take all the players pieces so they can only move their king, then you make it so you corner the king without actually putting him in check. But I don't really know chess well enough to know what that's called.

Forth: A tower defence game, but instead of having mobs come directly at your base, they are more like a "zerg" fungus, where they just keep taking ground away from you. Eventually you run out of ground unless you defeat the fungus and knock it back enough that you've got it controlled. <<< Mechanic I thought of to go with this, make the fungus a "plant" so you can make it effected by weather. So if it's raining, the plane will grow more vigorously, if it's sunny it will grow more vigorously. I would use Perlin noise to generate two waves/signals, link one into 'water' and one into 'sunshine' so the veracity of the fungus is repeatable (use a seed!!!)

Anyway, I hope everyone else if having fun, and if you have not thought of a theme, I hope this post might have given you some insperation!

Good luck Y'all

React - Really enjoying using it

Hey all,

So I've taken to using react for this LD. I learned react between the last LD and this one, and it's pretty darn good! I don't think I'm using it the "right" way, but it's working for me so I'm happy.

Anyway, I wondered if anyone else is using react, and how do you plan to deply/test this? I've got an IPhone 6, but no Android device to test on :(

I plan to release this using "Expo" so whoever want to play it will need to download Expo, but I'm not sure if there is a better way? especially for IPhones, Apple is terrible for developers, you have to jump through so many hoops and rings of fire in order to get something onto your own phone, never mind trying to get something out to where other people are able to try it. sigh

Any recommendations appreciated :)

Are you using react native? - My last LD Entry ended in flames

Heya, so if you're using react native, then you might like to read some of the pitfalls that I experienced when doing my last LD

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/orbitum-scaterum

I really wish I had gotten that game published, I think it would have been really fun.

A touch of Perlin Noise

Game map - a touch of Perlin noise, and if people find the game fun, I can slowly change characteristics of the map over time, either making the world harder or easier to live in.

I really hope people enjoy my game

Conducting epic stress tests

So how would I stress test my multiplayer game designed for mass connectivity and high speed AI scripts?

How about 2390 simultaneous connections, running 2390 individual characters, and monitoring them on a world map?

Those black dot's are all characters, that's just the world view, in truth the real load is running invisibly behind the scenes processing all the AI Instructions coming in.

I'm seriously impressed with the number of connections I can handle! other than my Laptops fan turning up to about mid-way (plenty of room before it hits 11) there's no noticeable game lag, the server seems to process all the incoming requests and dispatching all the appropriate events out to the connected AI's.

Really hope people enjoy playing this game! I honestly think when I launch it up onto AWS, it will be able to handle 5K connections as an average load. (Not that I don't want you to test it!)

Which world map do you prefer?

Please comment to vote - I'm genuinely curious and it will affect the gameplay quite a lot Land World Screen Shot 2019-04-29 at 9.31.32 am.png Water World Screen Shot 2019-04-29 at 9.31.09 am.png

Ludum Dare 45

What's your games inspearion?

Tell us what inspired your game.

I wrote a game about a spirit/ghost trying to cross the river Styx - The river that souls have to cross in Greek Mythology in order for them to access the after life. Game: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/45/styx Wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Styx

My inspiration came from the idea that if oyu start with nothing, then maybe you can really start with absolutely nothing. No character, no tools no money.. Just nothingness. And Ghosts fit that description (Other than the ones who rattle chains, obviously they have chains).

I wondered what a Ghost would need? I didn't want to write a game about possession (I don't like horror etc) so I thought about maybe the ghost needs something for the afterlife, like old kings that were buried with their wives and slaves and treasure. The same burial rituals existed for most cultures where the dead were buried with something they needed for the afterlife.

It boiled down to what was easy to code, and after thinking about the Greek myth of the ferry man that takes souls across the river Styx to the underworld, I thought a simple goal was for the player to need the coins to pay the ferry man (Charon). So that's the inspiration behind my game.

Feeling pretty good about this screen right here

Feel like over made a lot of different types of games. I think I’m going to have to learn some FPS engine though, since so far everything (mostly everything) is very scene by scene or isometric.

Could also do a platform game, though I have grown to dislike them since getting older and my reaction speeds dropped.

1.. 2.. 3.. Jump, no and I’m falllllling.... splat

Ludum Dare 46

Are you playing "The Game"?

Why did I have to think of "The Game", it's been years since I've thought of "The Game"

Multiplayer Game - Online Meetup

Heya - my Multiplayer game has a group of people planning to come together and play this evening at 7PM Brisbane time

https://www.google.com/search?q=time+in+brisbane+australia

If you would like to try out the game this evening with a group of players, I would love it if you joined us.

The Game page is here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/elon-zo-colony-management-interplanetary-shipping

(And I will be playing and rating games on the weekend as well :) so please feel free to leave comments and I'll follow them back to your page )

I hope to see people there, I'm really looking forward to seeing what people make of my first ever Multiplayer game!

Thank you :v:

Does anyone know how the Karma and stuff works?

Heya, so I'm curious what I've done wrong, I went and ranked a bunch of games, left a comments and a score on each.

Admittedly I mostly ranked the unfinished games because: A) very few people look at them B) I'm on a Mac - so I can't play a lot of the games anyway. C) It's really nice when you feel like you failed, to get a message on your unfinished game that says "Wow your art is great!" or anything that values and validates the time that you spent creating.

Anyway

So I went through and I ranked several finished games, and about 30 unfinished games. This is what my game page looks like at the moment for Karma and stuff:

Karma for Feedback given: 13 Ratings given: 41.625 Ratings received: 20.75 Classic Balance: 145.1756 * Smart Balance: -30.4148 *

My "Smart Balance" didn't go up after I had ranked peoples games, so I'm not on the first 10 odd pages of games, and kinda want to get some more exposure (Who doesn't want more exposure?)

So can someone tell me what I might have done wrong, or what I've missed about how the rankings and things work? Actually, in general what do people know about the Karma system, and the Balance systems? How do they works, what are they?

Thank you to anyone who spends the time to look at this :) I really appreciate any insight that people have.

Hope you LD game is getting lots of traffic :)

We have a full compliment of Musicians at the moment - sorry.

You can check out my library of games here: https://ldjam.com/users/tolmera/games That should give you some idea about what I’ve done in the past.

Currently we have at least 3 musicians, 3 programmers (Unity seems to be the flavour of the month, but all skills are welcome, I would very much like to produce an HTML/Javascript game, but if the team skill weighting is significantly in favour of Unity, who am I to disagree a :) )
