Ludum Dare 50

A la recherche de développeurs

:flagfr: Bonjour amis francophones ! :flagfr:

How we manage to separate light and color in our game "Endless Night"

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/50/the-endless-night

Hello everybody ! Our lil baby "Endless Night" was an amazing adventure and I want to share with you some of the tips we use to enhance the visual part of our game. I was the only one in charge of all the visual development (except animation) and I had to create a bunch of buildings to reproduce a 2D top down isometric medieval city.

01_Pipleine.png

During the development, wRadion, one of the devs asks me if I could disociate the lighting and the colors, to bring life in the game by adding variations to the lighting. So we decided to export all props in different painting passes like that :

01_Pipeline.png

This way we could see light variations and simulate some kind of night fog !

Please, feel free to discover our game and to share your feelings about it ! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/50/the-endless-night 20_GifLudumDare.gif Can't wait to see your games

Create your emo legacy

20emGif/emProtectYourLegacy.gif

The main idea about our game was about playing a vampire who creates a legacy by biting people in a village, without being caught by guards. But early in the process, we thought about our teenagers years and laught about the idea of villagers becoming emo-kids by becoming vampires. So it is how this first sketch come to life : 23_Communication.png

Soon, Ikowa, our 2D animation artist made some walk cycle to define everybody's behaviour : walk_3.gif

But our GameDesigner created a new character, the priest ! So we ask him if the priest could be bitten. He said yes so we created a Emo version of the priest : 08_LePretre.png

Our gamedesigner also said in the GDD that the hero could go to a tavern to hide himself. So, with Ikowa, we figured out the idea that emo could be hidden in a Tokyo Hotel concert, so we chose to replace the Tavern by a Concert. Here is the first rough animation : 06emTaverne.jpg emos/emdancing.gif

How to paint 4 seasons quickly and effectively

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/51/a-quick-bunny-affair

(Please apologize my poor english level)

:carrot: Hello everyone ! I want to share to my fellow gaphist friends some little tips I used to change efficiently a background into many seasons. For first, here is the for versions needed for our game :

Summer 05emDecomposition/emEte.png

Fall 05emDecomposition/emAutomne.png

Spring 05emDecomposition/emPrintemps.png

Winter 05emDecomposition/emHiver.png

The first real thing about painting this background is about making separate props, to be as fluid as possible for the game developper to create the game they want and to be as fluid as possible for you, to change easily the overall mood by ajusting every props one by one. A good practice for that is to deal with Smart Object in photoshop. They offer many good points but there is two : - They transform the reusability of the props - They give you a good way to export every props at the right size

05emDecomposition/emLayers.png

The second tip is about separating the shadows and the color. Indeed, colored shadow is a good way to give to an image an overall mood. And you dont want to paint again and again you shadows every time you want to make a new season. Here is a look to my shadow layers : 05emDecomposition/emOmbrage.png

The only thing I needed to do when I started a new season was to lock every shadow layer and fill it with a new color (for exemple, blue for winter). Try it and you will see the result !

Anyway, to manage the feeling of seasons changing every 10 seconds, the development team did a wonderfull work on the particules. Feel free to test the game to experience it !

I hope this few tips could help some of you, I am so amazed by all you wonderfull art and games ! Keep going this way, Ludum dare is my favorite Game Jam ever

Karmarvest

Welcome to Karmarvest, the video game where you will have to cultivate your destiny and your karma as the most precious harvest. :sunflower: You embody a character and with every choice you make, you must consider how they will influence your future... or not Think of it like a seed that you plant in the ground : it can germinate immediately or years later. But in any case, you must take care of it and kept it away from weeds. Fate and karma are like the natural elements that will influence your harvest. They can be supportive and help you reap the rewards of your efforts, or they can be unfavorable and put the field of your hopes in danger.

A quick tuto on how we created so many buildings fast

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/53/postal-hero

Hi everyone! I've received a lot of feedback from people impressed by the huge city in our game, especially the variety in our buildings. So, I thought it would be cool to share how I created so many buildings in the game.

From the start, we wanted a large city that allowed the player to navigate without a map. Therefore, we needed to avoid the repetitive aspect of buildings while working on the level design.

Firstly, we needed to define the artistic direction of the project, so I started working on these two buildings to discuss with the team.

01_Concept.png

Drawing inspiration from my work at Blue Canvas Media, I decided to create a building kit, which resulted in: 02_Kit.png

The idea was to quickly create about fifteen houses from this kit to populate the city. Then, like in a game, all we had to do was take different elements and assemble them to create coherent properties.

Have you played our game? https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/53/postal-hero

What did you think of the city? Do you want more tutorials or more detailed tutorials? Feel free to comment on this post, and I'll respond to everyone!
