Few, that one hell of a weekend. Just an hour before the start of LD #23 I decided to participate, no regrets! This was my second time and my first “success”.
For a time I had an idea of a space game with destructible terrain/planets. Then came the theme “Tiny World”, which was a good excuse to finally create a prototype. The result is good, but I didn’t have enough time left to implement real gameplay. I also spend less time on the project then I hoped, mainly because I didn’t prepare.
What went right:
- I got the right tools.
- My framework actually worked!
- I had a lot of fun.
- Background art looked pretty neat.
- The technical part, physics and terrain destruction, went very well.
What went wrong:
- I spend WAY to much time on a single thing: technical stuff.
- I should have thought about gameplay and experimented with it much earlier.
- I didn’t really prepare, only had the code of my previous attempt: LD #22.
Next time I’m going to think more about gameplay. Just planets and destructible terrain is not enough. I had no idea what to do to make it fun. I have an idea now though, and I’m sure to split my LD #23 entry into a real project/game.
Next time, I should prepare more. Practice with creating art/sounds/music. Especially playing sound effects caught me of guard, I didn’t have any experience with that. I’d also love the work with more people, or atleast not being alone the whole weekend. Maybe a Dutch gathering next time? Let me know if you’re interested (even if it’s a bit early now).
Thank you Ludum Dare, for all your efforts to make this experience a very good one. Until next time!
