hi guys!
I’m going to do my 2nd Ludum Dare Compo this week end. I participated to the #33 and had a blast doing it!
It’s hard. But in a good way. I’m a programmer with some 3d modeling skills (but not a 3d artists by any stretch) and I tend to want to write everything from scratch, and generally in C++.
Technically speaking, I lost few hours of the last compo throwing the fundations of a game engine by hand in visual studio. I used libraries that I know quite well in C/C++ (Ogre, OpenAL, Bullet Physics…) but still, I felt like I lost to much time on this and not on actual game design.
I’m not here for a programming exercise, I (at least I think) am pretty good at coding. I’m here to experiment with game design.
This is why I started to mess around with Unity. I don’t have problems with C# (I’ve done Java before. It feel and looks really similar) and I find the dev environment is well though. I haven’t done anything real with it yet. I want to this tool to make my game this weekend.
I spend time wanting to “make games” without doing it. I don’t know why actually. I lack interesting ideas maybe. But, in the context of the LDJAM, the imposed limitations and rules, with the theme selected by the community give me the direction to sail my ship.
The ludum dare community is really supportive and awesome, and it’s a great learning experience to participate.
I wish everyone good luck and I hope you will finish your game and be happy with it. I just done my final voting, some themes inspire me, some give me no freaking idea of what to do. I hope the selected theme will be one of my personal down vote. I need that challenge! 😉
PS: wow. A rapid blog post typed on my phone, in English, at 3am (France) that’s more than 300 words? I didn’t knew I could do that xD
