Ludum Dare 48 April 24–27, 2021

Runnnn !

You are a powered robot with low fuel, you need to avoid and destroy obstacles in order to land safely at the end of the cavern. Good luck https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/48/falling-bot unknown.png

Speedruns anyone? Game Suggestions?

Is your game speedrunable (is that a word?)? Let me know your game in the comments, I will try!

Our Game is speedrunable. Here is my humble result.

Tips / known issues

  • Use Flares (F) to light up dark areas and remove leaches
  • Use Scanner (E) to hint directions to next objective
  • Use Harpoon (LMB) to kill fishes (can you be heartless?) and get additional O2.
  • Shortcuts will OPEN UP doors in the main-hub accessible on your next dive. Press F (for flare) on your next dive to locate them if you can not see them.
  • our game looks scary but it isn't ( I hope )
  • Stars are only for fame.

Modest Oil - totally safe, totally legitimate, totally normal

I'm excited to start the weekend and play some more Ludum Dare games! If you've got a game you'd like to share, please feel free to post a link- and if you’re interested and haven’t given Oiligarch a try yet, please check it out here! We'd love to hear your feedback, I'm hoping to try to expand on this concept in a post-LD release sometime. Thank you

Reaching under, the mechanics

screenshru.png

When we were thinking about reaching under the seat of your car (while driving) we thought about it as quite a physical thing. You have to twist and stretch your arm uncomfortably and that's why we decided to portray that somehow in the mechanics by making the player "twist and stretch" their hand in order to hold down the keys to reach points.

We hope you get to try our game and enjoy the humor of it. Feel free to comment and let us know what you think! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/48/reaching-under

Too complicated ending?

Hi fellow jammers,

In the comments of our game, people say that they "like" the ending, but I am not sure if they really get the thoughts I had when writing it.

The only way to find out is to ask for it, I guess - so please write here in the comments, what you think about the ending of our game.

And of course I will give feedback on your game in exchange (if I haven't already). ^^

Exiled: Lessons learned and tools I used

Hi! This is the second part of the post-mortem for Exiled, my entry for LD48. It's a narrative-based exploration game with retro graphics, and I hope you enjoy it.

closeup_ludum.png

Lessons learned

You can check out the full dev log to get a gist of what actually happened while developing the game, but the TL;DR version is: my initial idea was to make a Diablo demake, and it ended up being like a Zelda without combat. However I added a bit of narrative to it, and that kind of saved the entry and made it a "full" game.

What went well

  • I did submit something somewhat finished, even though the game ended up being something different to what I had in mind at the beginning of the jam.
  • It was my first time making 1-bit pixel art and it turned out relatively well (keep in mind that I'm a programmer!).
  • I made a cute, charismatic character.
  • Godot made exporting to HTML5 a breeze and I didn't encounter any issues with it. It also made rendering a multiple-layer tilemap really easy and creating levels was super fast.

What went wrong

  • I overslept and had a very slow morning on Sunday and I cost me a bunch of hours. I also watched FCBarcelona game in the afternoon, and I lost another two extra hours in there. I could have used that time to wrap the ending in a better way, or design more levels or more tiles, or add a Credits screen…

  • I spent too many hours in the comic-like text balloon for dialogues. It turns out UI in Godot is not easy or intuitive and my ego got in the way, so instead of hacking my way out of it or hardcoding the graphics for dialogues I wasted time making it "right".

  • Since I made most of the art assets before coding, I ended up with graphics I didn't have time to include, like a walking animation or a sword.

Tools I used

Thanks for reading this! If you are curious about the game, I'd appreciate it a lot if you play it and leave a comment. And if you made a game for LD48 and it's playable on a Mac or a browser, let me know and I'll play & rate it.

As you go deeper, you keep dying in Defiled Reflection

In this horror puzzle game, you will die often... That is why we spent a lot of time and effort working on the death animation...

Here is the sprite sheet :

And here is the finished animation :

The question is: how many times will you see this animation...? Wanna know? Go die again and again in Defiled Reflection :

Highly recommended to play with a CONTROLLER!

It's nice and short! 4 minutes or so!

They have a highscore ladder but unfortunately it's already been hacked.

Reaching Under

How many goodies can you retrieve from under the seat of your car? screenshru2.png We know its tough.. but you can do it!!

Have a go and tell us what you found :)

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/48/reaching-under please drive responsibly

Grab a buddy and come play Grave Fallers in split screen!

Grave Fallers is a racing platformer where you try to fall as deep as you can in a 2-minute time limit. In your way stand dangerous thorny platforms and fireballs. When you hit them one of your hearts is shot upwards in form of a pick up, if you're out of hearts you are shot upwards yourself to respawn, losing some of the depth you've gained.

The game has a single-player mode which most people rate here, however, it was primarily developed to be a 2 player experience where each player controls one sibling racing each other in split screen, trying to get deeper than the other player.

If you have someone to play with we would really appreciate your feedback on the two player mode. You can play on one keyboard or with controllers. WebGL version is available, however, it may have problems with some controllers so for the best experience the pre-built binaries are the best choice.

If you've played the two-player mode, how far did you get? How many times did you replay the game? Was it engaging or boring? What would improve the replayability for you? Being second, did you feel like you have a chance of reaching the other player? Did you switch places often?
