Ludum Dare 50 April 2–5, 2022

Don't you hate doing the dishes?

Us too! That's why we made a game about achieving life's greatest pleasure: not doing them.

Try to beat other players by getting the highest tower and delaying this stupid chore.

We would love for you to check it out and leave a comment with your thoughts

Where you spend your jam time...

I intended GAME USER EXPERIENCE MANAGER SIMULATOR to showcase my writing, and then ended up spending most of my first 36 hours on JavaScript and CSS...oops. I am actually really proud that I managed to bend Twine into this nearly unrecognizable console interface. Also, none of the screenshots show off that I manually implemented tweening to draw a fake mouse that moves around the screen, which took wayyyy too many hours but by the time I realized what I was losing...sunk cost. Still, it became a core gameplay loop and I'm pretty proud of it!

So... I made a retirement home management game...

Main.png

So... This is my first time joining a ludum dare Jam. I amways saw it as too big and intimidationg for me... But, when I saw that it was the 20th anniversary, I forced myself to joining. And since I like a bit of challenge (and I'm probably a bit insane) I opted for the compo.

I wasn't really inspired by the theme at first. But after a bit of brainstorming I gathered that the most unavoidable thing in life is... well... death... (duh!)

So I came up with this idea of trying to keep a dying character alive by tending to it's need. And it somehow turned out into a retirement home management game. I know it sound dull... & to be honest... it kinda is ^^

06.png

The game is not half as fun as it should be, it's not properly balanced & it's missing a lot of the features I had in mind (Overscoping is a real plague). BUT it's playable and it basically do what I was aiming for.

07.png

I'm honestly proud that I managed to pull off that much in just 48h with initially almost 0 knowledge on how to properly design music or make proper sounds (not saying it sound awesome... but it's not awfull... so that's a win).

Anyway... If that got you curious. Feel free to give it a go & don't hesitate to leave feedbacks.

I'll probably post a post-jam update (yes... I'm frustrated about all the missing features in that game... again, overscoping is a plague :p)

If you made it so far in this post... well.. don't you have anything better to do ? Go play some games ! And don't forget to leave feedbacks !

Cheers ! :)

Slow heat till ready

Finishing touches on menu and sounds, and mr. Sausage will be ready to roll!

So... Jam was 72h with team and compo was alone in 48?

I added my game as a Jam game thinking it was the 'I did it all myself in 48h' jam, but now I see that the JAM ENDS countdown keeps running... so I guess I messed up O:D

Does it matter a lot? Is it possible to change it somehow? (I uploaded it yesterday way before the deadline!)

Exhaustion

A working web version! Unbelievable!

So I managed to create a functional web version of my game. Unbelievable... It usually doesn't work since I abuse the particle and lighting systems like there's no tomorrow... but I guess a working web version is what happens when you decide not to work 48 hours straight and f* up your state of being even further for once.

Enjoy if possible

It's taking shape!

Still a few bugs, but the basic gameplay is working pretty nicely already. Screenshotem2022-04-04/em18-29-39.png We decided to scrap some additional features (e.g. needing to water the plants) in favor of some polish. Like

The plants probably shouldn't grow ON THE WALL OF THE HOUSE.

But I'm optimistic that we can publish in a few hours :D

Going into Crunchtime

Could not do so much today as i had some other work to do. But now its on for the last 8 hours. The mechanics are all in place - including an AI system that actually works and is help to the player - but the game still has no structure and no way to end.

This is me getting carried by my allies in a space dogfight:AI dogfight.gif

I already knew there will be no time for menus and other not completely gameplay related things so thats a way to save time xP

Still need:

-voices ("radio transmissions")

-wave system

-an end

-competent enemies

Anyway - Good Luck to all jammers and well done to the compo folk for finishing in time!

Progress!

I have created som 3D assets for the game :)

https://jeromewah.itch.io/doomsday2022

Doomsday 2022 was a project made for Ludum Dare 50 with 6 members. While we had little to no expectations for this project, we were pleasantly surprised by the outcome of the game in such a limited time. Alas, we were unable to complete the full vision of what our game should be, and that is quite a missed opportunity. Nevertheless, it was still an overall positive experience for all us :) Already looking forward to another Game Jam
