Ludum Dare 51 September 30–October 3, 2022

Jam Newbies take on LD 51!

How's it going LD 51! My team and I(we still can't decide on a name) are all jamming for the first time. We have gamed together for a couple of years now but have not done much together outside of that. We always thought that making a game together would be fun. I found out about this contest from watching a Unity tutorial and knew we had to partake. And now we're here!!!

We will be using Unity as our editor and Aseprite for our sprite sheets.

Exited to be here and happy jamming all!

We're in!

LD51! If I submit, this will be my 14th entry. Where does the time go?

This time, I'm entering with 2 friends and my partner. We're in different time zones as well, so I'm not sure how that will go. I'm planning on taking it chill and having fun, and maybe making something a bit quirky. Simple, quirky and polished.

I really hope the theme isn't 10 Seconds. I competed in LD27 (my 5th!) and hated the theme back then. Our entry was "10 Second Army", and I think it's the worst entry I've ever completed

It's Flash, so essentially unplayable :frowning2:

Even if it is the theme, I'm sure we'll have fun. And don't forget, that's really what counts!

I also came up with a list of alternative themes (or sub-themes) when I visited the Museum of Anthropology in Vancouver last night. Feel free to take one or any of them into your game:

  • Dolls
  • Masks
  • Borders and not belonging
  • Changing times
  • Block colours, warped and odd shaped animals and colours
  • Ecology and climate change - tree of life
  • Froggies
  • Ducks and waterfowl
  • Creation stories
  • Canoes, water travel
  • Trade, tourist art, colonialism
  • Zuni owls
  • Geometric patterns, sweaters

For reference, this is a Zuni Owl. They are magnificent.

We're in!

Working with quite the team for this Ludum dare. Super excited to see what everyone can turn out this weekend!

First time?

Yes it is! Lets go Ludum Dare 51! Also my first time working alone so lets see how this goes :D

Office finally set up

2 desktops, 4 laptops, 1 steam deck, tons of cables, 1 negative covid test, 2 hours and a couple forgotten items later, our temporary office is finally set up. It's a bit of a mess, but should hopefully get us through the weekend.

Happy weekend to all ;)

Going casual this time!

I think that I don't want to be judged this year. I always feel a lot of pressure at LDs, and this time I will just take my time and enjoy myself.

I'll follow the Compo rules, but grades will be disabled (can I do that?).

Good luck everyone!

Hurricane strikes

Hurricane struck! So I'm still without power. Hopefully it come back tomorrow morning so I can participate this year. I will be live streaming development tomorrow if the power comes through.

Good luck everyone. We start soon!

I'm in!

Let's try to finish the game this time :]

First Time Jammer!

Het guys!

First time doing Ludum, here! Hope to have fun and hope you guys do as well.

We are a studio of part time bounty hunters, where we make games in our down time in a station out in space. For this jam, we will be teaming up with artists from @madbunnylabs!

Yet another "I'm in post!"

I'm stubborn and I refused to make my life easy, so after 2 years I'm in with WEBGL Typescript web-game stack:

  • Svelte
  • ThreeJS
  • Supabase (online leaderboard maybe..?)
  • Bfxr, Audacity
  • Aseprite, paint.net

So much for a quiet weekend

So I was planning on going away in the countryside, away from the computer, but my friend asked me if I wanted to team up for Ludum Dare this weekend. So here we are!!!

200% Sound designers, 50% Game designers, 1% Programmers... Will they manage to pull anything off???

-The triller you did not know you needed-

Best of luck everyone!!!

First time trying the Compo !

I did some game jams before but never did the Ludum Dare (student and casual only). First time trying the Compo, it's gonna be savage. Don't forget to have a normal sleep time to be productive !

Tools i'll use : - Unity - Aseprite (first time) - C#/Visual Studio - Bfxr/Audacity

Good luck everyone, may the theme be with you ! <3

LD51 Theme Thoughts (Final Round)

I won't be able to actually do the Ludum Dare (I have to do the leetcodes for interviews next week) but thought I would post my initial ideas for each of the themes in the final round. I've grouped certain themes in categories:

Impermanence

  • Every 10 seconds
  • Use it or lose it
  • Nothing is permanent

I was thinking of a riff off of the Nolan movie Memento, except the MC is a goldfish. The setting would be limited and I guess a short memento would disappear every 10 seconds or something.

Multiples

  • Split
  • Duplication

I would have a prism game where the character can run through prisms and filters to split/duplicate into multiple selves.

Chemistry

  • Making connections
  • You shouldn't mix those

For both I would just make a very wonky chemistry game where you can stick atoms together and see what happens.

Going Bad

  • Mutations
  • Corruption

This idea seems the most doable to me, and fun. You would have a DNA sequence, and every time it needs to get copied, you play the notes that make up the DNA sequence. Every wrong note you play equals a mutation/corruption of the new cell. Things like free radicals that can ding up the DNA can make it more challenging.

Grow At All Costs

  • Keep it moving
  • Overgrown
  • Ascend
  • Harvest

All four themes could illustrate the growth-at-all-costs mentality companies have today. I was going to have a company represented by bacteria in a petri dish and they try to grow at all costs to keep shareholders happy, until the harvested resources of the dish are completely exhausted.

Miscellaneous

There were three other themes that I couldn't really group with the others:

  • Parasite - I dunno, I guess you try to grow a hookworm in an intestine. You could flip it back and forth to avoid the immune system and dewormers and grab the food bits.

  • Shelter - You are a hikkikomori but your food level goes down often, forcing you to leave the 'shelter' and get food every now and then. You try to build up confidence, which can get killed by mean randos or something.

  • Side effect - I can't really think of anything. Maybe you're Adam/Eve after eating the forbidden apple and thoughts keep popping up that prevent Adam/Eve from sleeping, so you're like a little angel thing you swing around to bounce the bad thoughts away, because the side effect of sudden knowledge is insomnia from the endless stream of anxiety-inducing possibilities the brain is now able to conjure.

I might try doing LD Casual after interviews finally end for me. Good luck to everyone doing the Dare!

15 and counting! Ready for a wild weekend of Streaming!

Student Sound Designer Looking for a Team

Hey guys, I am new to LD and I am a student sound designer in my final year.

I am looking for a team but not exactly sure where to start! If anyone needs a sound designer, I’d love to join and get some experience - no matter the project!

I am in the Uk and I’m free tonight and all day tomorrow…Sunday I am a little busier during the day but can do more in evening.

Please give me a shout if you want to get something on the go :)

Thanks!

The Last Supper

With an hour left until the theme announced I'm getting through my last bits of advance preparation. Audio on the SNES is weird and confusing but I'm getting there. On it's simplest level I'm just converting WAV for sound and IT MOD tracker files for music into something the SNES SPC chip can play back. Implementing that, even with PVSnesLib doing most of the heavy lifting is taking me some time to get working nicely. I'm terrible for leaving audio until last so I'm glad I'm ironing out some of these problems tonight, so that I'm not left making excuses on Monday why I'm submitting a mute game. I also wish I was better at composing music. It's the one aspect of the "lone wolf indie" I've never been able to pull off and normally I get away with some royalty free music. That's not so easy when working with systems that need MOD tracker based music.

Anyway here's my first meal of Ludum Dare. It's a steak pie and it tastes a lot better than it looks:
