Ludum Dare 51 September 30–October 3, 2022

*Wrings Greasy Mitts together excitedly*

While everyone else has been saying the theme sucks, I've actually got a half-good idea for it. It just needs refinement since it was added to a pile of other ideas that we're mostly half-thought out to save on time in case it wasn't the theme. Granted, it wasn't one of those "slobber in anticipation over getting to make the game" ideas, but it wasn't Side Effects. Thank god it wasn't Side Effects.

What's with all the bad vibes?

A theme is what you make it. I'm thinking a kind of platformer where levels are only ten seconds long. I can use Unity's physics and still be good for compo rules right?

well, i guess i got a sign from the universe

Wanted to make something cool or at least fun for a loooong, but there were not enough time or i was being lazy. Half an hour ago read a huge post from a guy, who published a cool game, starting from Ludum dare. Thought to myself "hmmm, I wonder, when the next ludum dare will be", checked when the next Ludum dare will be... 10 minutes, ok..., I'll go make coffee...

Love the theme! Your game can be anything and you get to throw in this mechanic to make it even more interesting. Or center your gameplay around it. Or anything in between. It could be as simple as an enemy wave or a supply drop but your imagination's the limit. Have fun all!

Not going to do this but...

Y'all need some creative takes on the word "seconds". Get second place 10 times! Go back for seconds again and again! Visit 10 locations, and the second time you visit them, they've vastly changed!

If you don't like the time-based theme, there's plenty more to work with!

Theme selection is again ..surprising

I would love to see a histogram of theme votes to see how this theme climbed to the top!

Anyway, Javascript is our tool of choice.. so let's do this!

setInterval(()=>spawnEnemy(),10000)

Edit: as noted by @patrick-premartin a histogram was posted by Mike on Twitter: https://twitter.com/mikekasprzak/status/1575969839847350272

Pixel artist who wake up to late...

So my programmer couldn't make it for this jam and I was gonna skip it as well (after all I missed last two years of LD). But I saw the theme and some urge got better of me. I have nothing better to do this weekend, I frankly don't want to work on my game atm so if anyone is in need of a pixel artist hit me. I'm opened with anything as long as the game is in unity. I can also do level design.

Good Luck

Well, let's try to do this... Good luck everyone

Game ideas for anyone who wants them

While I'm going to be making a different game, here are some ideas I had that I still think are really cool:

  1. You are an action movie hero and you have to make something explode every ten seconds to keep the audience from getting bored.

  2. The game restarts every ten seconds you have to find a way to beat it very quickly.

  3. A brutally difficult bullet hell survival game with checkpoints every ten seconds.

If anyone does happen to use one of these, lemme know, I would love to play the game :)

Love the theme !

Starting a little bit late, but already having tons of idea ! Good luck everyone !

Every Ten Seconds...

Someone posts about the theme being bad. Wait another ten seconds for your turn.

Idea on the board

I've been having migraines all week and my Internet is playing up, so this could be a dicey Ludum Dare for me. Nonetheless, I have the idea that I'll be trying to stick to: a bullet hell shmup where you can only shoot every ten seconds. This should actually make the game even harder than it sounds, because you can't kill the enemies before they fill the screen with bullets, so it's purely a game of how well you can dodge.

I have a basic prototype in place in TIC-80 and I'll start fleshing out the actual mechanics tomorrow.

The theme...

Always give me headache... I mean challenge! For me, this theme was quite broad. Need to think over it while i'm buying food for LD. Wish you luck to you guys for this LD.

10 seconds in base 2 are actually 2 seconds in base 10

I settled on a puzzle game revolving about that idea. Still developing the concept further.

Toying with having to synchronize things that require a period of 10 seconds in different bases. Maybe musical instruments? Industrial machines?

My idea

In a steam-punk-y world, someone is testing circuit-board-like things with a little robot, but due to how the power of this world works (sort of steam powered... kind of) she needs to get each 'test task' done under 10 seconds. Every circuit-board-like thing will be 'procedurally generated'... and there will be all sorts of tests to be done! Here are some brainstorming concepts...

Generall Game Ideas

For all of you out there, not knowing what to do with this theme, here are a lot of base ideas to help you get started, have fun :3

  • All 10 Seconds something new spawns
  • All 10 Seconds add something to increase the challenge
  • All 10 Seconds reset the game to the last savespot
  • All 10 Seconds change the world around the player
  • All 10 Seconds take dmg - heal yourself to stay alive
  • All 10 Seconds revert/change your input
  • The player has 10 Seconds to finish a task that gets harder and harder every time

The theme sounds familiar...

My very first Ludum Dare was Ludum Dare 27, and the theme was "10 Seconds". Almost 10 years ago! Time flies! So I was thinking, why not test my skills a little, and re-imagine my very first Ludum Dare entry.

My skills were basic and the game was basic, but I was proud of it and it's meaningful as a first entry :

The new version is totally going to blow it out of the water (hopefully) and will be nice to see how many skills I've gained since then.

Good luck y'all!

big brain game idea

every 10 seconds nothing happens...

but every 0-9 seconds everything happens
