Looking for games from first-timers

I've submitted my game and am now in the phase of rating and giving feedback on other games. As this is my first Ludum Dare, I decided to focus on games from other first-timers. If this is your first Ludum Dare and you have submitted a game (or if you have one to recommend), post it in the comments.

Edit: Here's my game, in case anyone else is looking for other first-timers: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/51/oasis-escape

How many parcels can you pack?

This was my first game jam in a while, and I'm very happy with how it turned out. I'd love your feedback!

Would altering camera sensitivity after release break the rules?

A common criticism I've been getting about my game is that the camera is too sensitive. The rules state:

Certain Bug Fixes are allowed. You can’t add new features, but if something broke or didn’t work correctly as you were finishing up, you can fix this after the deadline. You are asked to highlight the changes you make in your submission (a short change log). You probably wont get a 2nd chance with some players, but at least it wont be a problem for future players.

Thing is, the change I'm thinking of making is kind of in a gray area. It's not really a "bug", but it's also not adding a new feature.

Downloadable games needed

I'm gonna start playing and giving feedback to your games soon, and I would like to play downloadable games first, since embedded ones get more attention by nature. If your game is downloadable and is not embedded, then please post the link to your game page in the comments so I can find it and play :heartbeat:

From blank screen to playable game

You think you get too many notifications now? In the future you will get them every 10 seconds, and you will check all of them out. To not do so would be considered an aberration.

This is where the jam theme took me for my submission "Aberration" (https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/51/aberration in browser ld embed playable) - my first unity game and gamejam ever.

Here is a dev diary in pictures and gifs:

Saturday

Wire up the notification timer events and subscribers around 2 PM:

Not freezing Z rotation is never not funny:

Finally done with the two main "enemies" in the game: surveillance systems, and NPCs. Get too close and you get influenced back into mindless consumption.

ezgif.com-gif-maker-3.gif

It's getting dark outside, and I'm really questioning how the hell am I gonna turn the above into a game. Oh and I also want to build a separate mini game to simulate hacking surveillance terminals. Scrapping the minigame is not really an option as I need it to tell the story.

Play around with some lights and a trailrenderer and get something going:

It's getting late but at this point I feel I at least have the basic mechanics down. Close to midnight, I get started on some tile art.

Moved on to characters. Thankfully 16x16px is not a lot of pixels, and I get a few characters done quite quickly:

Time to sleep.

Sunday

Wake up feeling optimistic, I have most of the pieces in place and should be able to combine them into something by the end of the day.

Minigame tiles sort of done:

Combine them tiles with the above lights and trail renderer and get this (some scene elements not shown for no spoiler reasons)

Take the main tilemaps and game mechanics and the first level is built

The rest of the day I fiddle with the editor, tile pallets, ui elements, and try and put everything together. End up with two levels two mini games and a decent amount of writing and story.

I get ambitious for my title screen art for all of about two minutes before I realise im never going to have the time. I do get the main concept done however and use it as a logo of sorts.

Finally with about two hours to go I get started on sound. - Pick the whirly piano in GarageBand for it's soft dreamlike sound, improvise a piece on my keyboard in the only key I sort of know, and boom, got my first original song ever. It's not much but it's honest work (I'm actually surprised how much I don't hate it) - you can have a listen to it on the title screen. - Smash the generator buttons in sfxr, mess with the sliders a bit, and some sounds effects are now also in the game.

With 60 minutes to go I spend about 45 trying to get the webgl output to look good in the LD embed window and finally get it done.

What an adventure this weekend's been. If you'd like to try my game I'd appreciate any feedback. Playable on the LD game page here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/51/aberration

Godot web export on ldjam.com

Has anyone managed to get a Godot web export to work on the LD page? I have uploaded the same zip that I uploaded to itch.io and here I get the following error, while on itch it is working correctly.

Long Shot is out now!

My Ludum Dare 51 entry, Long Shot, is now finished and released! It's an endless bullet hell where you can only shoot once every 10 seconds. Fight your way through an endless series of randomized enemy waves, dodging bullets and shooting back when you can, and aim for the highest score you can get.

video46.gif

You can play and rate it here, and it's also available on Newgrounds, itch.io, and the TIC-80 website.

...I wanted to polish this a little more, but my back is killing me and I need to rest. If there are any significant issues, please let me know in your review and I'll get to them when I'm not in crippling pain.

Way too much chaos

Screenshot 2022-10-03 110420.png When we initially came up with the idea of playing a endless survival game as a wizard, none of us realized how chaotic and crazy the end product would end up. I guess thats what happens when we constantly egg each other on.

You can check it out here (https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/51/drunk-wizard), and see how well you fare. Our team record is 425 seconds, but with our scaling difficulty system, getting past that might just be impossible!

Tremors! are propagating

It's been a four hands project for @julian-quirke and myself. And a first game jam for both of us. That was a fun and challenging long weekend.

We didn't manage to get the ludum dare embedding working but you can play it on itch.io.

Have a look if you like quick thinking, adjustable challenge and dumb AI.

Have a nice day everyone!

Was a last minute decision, but I'm glad I did it

Thought this would be the jam to actually kill me, ngl.

So this wasn't my first Ludum Dare, but the date completely fell out of my head. So when my game dev group mentioned it on Friday I had to make a snap decision on whether I'd join. But man am I glad I did.

I decided to * "take it easy" * on myself and make a cozy game. I'm still on the mend from finally getting caught by covid and since I always do jams by myself I didn't want to go too far in scope so I did my best to make something I knew I could finish.

I think I did a good job in that, but my body will not forgive me for the grind for a while  This was probably my most complex game jam entry to date (I even did my own foley) and my first finished product in Unity so I had to learn a lot on the fly.

So if you wanna play something kinda cozy, come check out my game * Pet the Damn Cat! * for Windows and HTML5.

I'm looking forward to taking a lil break from game dev and just focusing on playing y'alls games now.

I can't follow!
