Awesome Stuff I Didn't Make: Audio Tools

Hi. I used a lot of affordable tools, plugins, and open-source code and content for my submission this weekend. In this post, I want to talk about the audio tools and recordings I used to get started on this weekend's jam. There really are some incredible works of art available for free online, or even open-source. I strongly believe software is art.

I came home a couple hours after the beginning of the jam and opened Reaper, my current Digital Audio Workstation of choice. Reaper is a very powerful and affordable tool. I have only been using it for less than a year, and I have already grown so much as an artist. I have been very pleased with the frequent bug-fix updates, and look forward to diving more into plugins and custom UIs for it eventually.

Its developers distribute not only Linux builds, but ARM Linux builds as well. These builds seem fully functional on a Raspberry Pi. I've used it with Jack and PipeWire and not experienced much difficulty. As far as I can tell, it's the same program. That is truly awesome.

Adding the fact that you can build your own FX chains out of both free and commercial VSTs, LV2 plugins, and more, the possibilities are endless.

The thing is, I didn't think I was going to have the time or energy to participate. I haven't submit to LD since 2012. A lot has changed. But a good friend told me he and his friends had put together a team and he'd be making audio. His interest and enthusiasm really inspired me to mess around, too.

The thing is, my focus has been incredibly scattered the past year. I feel awful about it. My body fails me, my mind fails me, and everything feels terrible. I'm grieving. I'm healing. I'm trying to keep holding on. I decided to give myself some time to just mess around and make something goofy for the 51st jam.

In fact, writing this blog post is pretty exhausting, so here's a simple credits list for the clips and instruments I found instrumental (heh) in the production of 10Y Lost, 10M Lives Regained.

pyttsx3. I found this very usable with espeak on MS Windows via WSL. I'm thankful for the tools that let us use Linux development environments on Windows. Random audio plugin developers I am very grateful to: Cockos, Auburn Sounds, Glitchmachines, Wavesfactory, Valhalla DSP, Modartt, Spitfire Audio, Dreamtonics (and Eclipsed Sounds, and their collaborators)...

I also love the community at freesound. Artists whose recordings I used to add some layering and atmosphere to my tracks include: felix-blume, enricoviets, lordforklift, and the following artists' work to quickly throw together some last minute sound effects to work into the "ending" (can you call it that?) in 10Y: joelaudio, hoscalegeek, michael-grinnell, egomassive, strangehorizon... elise-admina, straget, buddyguytrask... all wonderful artists whose work released under the CC0 license I am so grateful for. Without their heartfelt, thoughtful, and creative work, I would not have been able to tie together even such a simple game on such limited physical and mental energy.

Anyway, peace. Thanks to all these contributors. I hope to talk more about the code and visual art tools used in future posts.

Do Elephants lay eggs?

This was my first time joining a game jam and I am so grateful to work with such a great team. The word elephant randomly popped up in my head during our brainstorming session and I loved watching how the team rolled with it to not only create a fun game idea but also we found a solid character backstory in the process.

Big Shoutouts to the Talents:

Ondřej Černý @sprotex - Coder

Otto Hartvich @hartvichio - Visual Design

Vašek Rezek @sipfindel - Sound Design

Groceries Please!

ld51_24.gif

Balancing work and family is hard, especially when you own a corner shop. It feels like you get a new customer every 10 seconds! Plus, my young daughter doesn’t help. I love her, but she needs a lot of help. Then there's my family back in India... how much can I afford to support them?

ld51_25.gif

There's always so much to do every day: stocking, serving customers, cleaning up mess, helping my daughter with homework... I try and keep customers happy, but there's only so much you can do. I just have to try my best.

Groceries Please! is our jam entry! Four of us from Literal Games worked very hard on it and are very pleased with how it came out. As usual we overscoped: I'll be writing up a full post-mortem soon though.

Well done to everyone who took part! I'm looking forward to playing and rating games

It's a short and cozy puzzle game, I hope you enjoy it!

Warning: The game might be challenging for people who are bad at music :P.

Punch card programmer wanted

With the brand new, state of the art computer that costed 2000$, you too can now become a punch card programmer.

punch_card.png

Each column is one instruction or data point. With Data pressed you can punch the necessary task input numbers, then with Data off you punch the instructions needed to solve the problem. Use Shift to get access to more instructions.

But to the machine data is code and code is data. You'll notice the card can only punch numbers from 0 to 9. If you need 12 type for ex the instructions 93+. Once you punched a card add it to the source deck that will be executed. You can sort the cards there. Good luck! The future needs you.

Bots, Bots, Bots - Our third jam!

CoverImage_Adjusted.png

We have released our third game jam! It was quite the experience and I think the hardest we have worked yet on a jam, and I think it is the most impressive final result we have had yet. I am really happy with how it came out and hope all of you enjoy the game!

And some quick screenshots of the modeling I handled for the game up close. All modeling and texturing was done with the intention of using a cel and outline shader in Unreal. I built the cel and outline shaders, along with some other custom material shaders to help us achieve our look.

24 hours game jam experience - Generated Music Rhythm Game

LD51_3.gif https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/51/neural-dodge

I used to make games with focus on presentation, but this time its something differenrt: its a mechanic-driven generated music rhythm game.

I was busy last weekend and I only have around a complete 24 hours to make this game, so I have to keep everything simple.

It ends with a solid result though and I am glad I did it this time - a 24 hours game jam expeirnece!

A singlt run lasts less than 2 minutes, and 100 seconds is the boundary that I plan for new content - so that's the line ;) Hope you make yourself there!

Please take a glance and have a try if you are available ;)
