Ludum Dare 56 October 4–7, 2024

Off to a great start

The last Human Shelter is under siege by self-replicating alien robots! It’s up to you to use the new Reprogrammator to salvage their bodies and save humanity! Build a mech to defend against waves of alien robot hordes, reprogram their minions to serve you as pieces of your mech, and strengthen your defenses in hope of fighting back the horde in hopes of a new dawn for humanity.

We had a rocky first few hours trying to figure out what game to make for the theme, but after sleeping on it, we have come up with a novel concept, that we should be able to iterate on immediately, and has that desired "inverted pyramid" design shape. With luck, maybe we've been spared from our usual overscoping problem! It has so many cool production hacks that should give a lot of gameplay for relatively little work

I would have had a cool picture to show you, but our artist realized that a bug in my Razer Audio Mixer creates such amazingly distorted sounds that she wanted to capture a bunch of audio material first.

We'll make sure to post again when we have something to show. Good luck all! :)

Lots of tiny and big ideas

OUR CONCEPT

Hey everyone!! I hope y'all doing great!

So...

What is our game about?

And most importantly, how is it called?

On this Ludum Dare 56 we decided to make Bullet Hell game with cute heroes!

For example, meet The Knight - Mighty warrior from Far lands, who escaped tiranny of the King. Your main goal will be destroying hordes of bugs with your drill!!!

You think you can do it?

Quick update on our game jam project, Evergrove! We set out to build a game with procedurally generated maps and colonies of tiny dwarves that can think for themselves but also work together for the greater good.

Right now, we’ve got the procedural map generation up and running, which is super exciting!

We’ve also started drafting out the resource hubs and the dwarves we’ll be spawning into the game.

Still some work to do there, but things are starting to take shape.

My concept

Hi fellow Ludum Dare-ers! I want to share my concept with you. I am making a 2D side-scroller, pixel art platformer, where you control a character, that can change it's size. But where is the theme yet? So, I decided, that a bunch of small spirits will follow the player, as a companion. Also, they give you the story: they got cursed by an evil king 5000 years ago. So, yeah, this is my concept. I don't know, how good it is, but I like it!

First post

Drafting up some pooflings!

I haven't done game art before, so hopefully it works out.

Team WaKA

Hello LDJam56. We are Team WaKA. @wavicle, @katagatame, @atonic.

We have a concept based around using tiny creatures to operating machinery made for big creatures. We have split the tasks, I am implementing the tiny creatures, and a platformer style interface to operate the machines (the inner game). @katagatame is coding what the machines do (the outer game). @wavicle is our artist for the weekend.

Thank you for your support. Lots of love to you all :two_hearts:

Progress is small... but so are our critters.

001-critters.gif

Most of the progress so far has been setting up a new game project, getting input working, data saving, etc. Can't wait to actually start coding the game!!

Still, we have a couple of critters... aren't they cute?

New Title and Splashscreen : Wednesday's Tiny Creatures

My grandchild visited to record some audio effects. She is scared of spiders and she asked me if I could make Wednesday.

So of course I obliged and this game is now called ' Wednesday's Tiny Creatures '

finally making progress

Okay, so I'm working on a visual novel. And everything was fine. Story is almost finished. Sketched a lot. And then I started working with Ren'Py and ... it didn't work the way I wanted it to.

I don't want to use the usual menu statement for making choices. Instead, I want my creatures to hide one of the choices (it makes sense in context).

But it just wouldn't work.

I spent an absolutely embarrassing amount of time on this. And the solution is hilariously easy. No, seriously.

I want to scream.

Oozemancy

Half of the day was spent arguing and fighting over the Brainstorm, time to start an actual gamedev :P

We decided to make a VR game about an Oozemancer trying to retrieve the Slimeonomicon from the Tomb Of Giants. Your weapon of choice are going to be the swarms of these cute little slime creatures that stick to surfaces and to each other. So you can pass the bridges by slapping a bunch of tiny slimes into as big Slimy Bridge, stick them to the wall to climb up, throw them at enemies, etc. image.png

What is your tiny creature?

What tiny creature(s) did you go for? Is it an existing creature? An animal or something else?

Starting to Get Somewhere

I've got most of the simple stuff done. There's slightly better graphics and now players can select---or tab through---the different creatures. The creature information appears on the far right. It was fun making the random name generator and genetic quality description. The color of the gene status field changes with gene rarity.

screenshot.png Alright I've got an idea and I whipped up a rough prototype last night. I don't think the idea is all that great or interesting, but I think it's doable and I'm going for doable and passable. If I can manage to make some intelligible assets and polish it enough, it might turn out ok.

Good luck on all your games y'all!

1 day gone and I have nothing

I'm thinking I might have to cut this jam short I've had about 3 ideas so far for the theme, worked on one got a decent chunk done but then got blocked because I don't know how to proceed forward anymore, gameplay mechanics have always been my go to for the jams but every idea I've had I don't know how to make the gameplay work so its started to overwhelm me a lot this theme wasn't the greatest for me but I know it has room to have really creative games made from it but everything I've come up with has failed and now I have no idea what game to make and with only 2 days remaining I'm not sure if I want to continue since I'll have to start from scratch again

Progress

Screen Shot 2024-10-05 at 18.00.10.png

Devlog: Slow Progress, But Steady!

The development of my game has been moving at a slower pace than I’d hoped, but there’s still progress! So far, I’ve got the game board set up and you can now traverse neighboring cells (in orange and green, the path from the currently selected cell (in white)). This is a small but essential step in bringing the game’s core mechanics to life.

What's Next?

I still haven’t implemented the Tiny Creatures (TC) that will populate the board, but the basic idea is coming together. The creatures will explore the board, aiming to reach different cells with various values. Each time you leave a cell, it will become barren, and the level ends once you’ve cleared the entire board. There will also be an AI-controlled TC that either competes with you or tries to prevent you from completing the level.

I’m juggling a few concepts for what the TCs could represent in the game. Here are the current ideas I'm playing with:

Current Next Ideas:

  1. Ants competing for food
Your TC could be ants searching for food, with rival ants competing for the same resources. The goal would be to collect food faster than your competitors and make sure your ants stay nourished.

  2. Viruses infecting human cells
Another idea is to have the cells represent human cells, with your TC being viruses that need to infect them. You’d have to race against the body’s immune system (like antibodies) trying to block you from infecting the cells.

  3. Antibodies curing cancer cells
In this concept, the TC could be antibodies, and the objective is to "cure" cancerous cells before they spread. This might be an interesting angle, especially with a theme related to Pink October to raise awareness about breast cancer.

Scoring and Progression

I'm also thinking about how the player can use their points. Depending on how I finalize the gameplay, points could work in several ways: - Use points immediately: You can improve your Tiny Creatures on the spot, making them faster, stronger, or creating new creatures to help explore the board. - Points for level completion: Points could be necessary to clear levels, meaning you'd have to balance between spending and saving. - Upgrades between levels: You could accumulate points to upgrade your TCs between levels, which would require more strategy as the game progresses.

What's Next on the To-Do List?

  • Implementing the Tiny Creatures – I need to bring the TCs to life and give them the ability to interact with the cells on the board.
  • Deciding on a core theme – Whether the game will be about ants, viruses, or antibodies, I’ll finalize the theme soon to better shape the mechanics and tone.
  • Balancing points and upgrades – I want to make sure the point system is balanced and fun, so I’ll be experimenting with how players can upgrade their creatures.

That’s all for this update! There’s still a long way to go, but I’m excited to keep refining these ideas and bring the game to life. Stay tuned for more updates as the Tiny Creatures start to take shape!

Status update!

Greetings!

I see many people do these so why not! I'm happy to anounce that since my mild breakdown at the start with 2D art I have made staggering progress, the game is conceptually done and is relatively easy to finish up when I get to that, music is coming along, just finished up my voice acting, now all I need to do is finish up some more models for the game and then get to making the 2 endings (yes I plan for 2 endings), hope everyone else is doing well in the jam

Can't compete this time around

Of all the weeks to have to work over the weekend, it just had to be this one! Well, looks like I'm not going to have any time to make anything for the jam, but I really love the theme this time and can't wait to play and rate all your games. Good Luck and Have Fun to everyone taking part!

Almost done for the first day

My scope is smaller than usual so that I can enjoy the weekend. One enemy type, one level, one boss, one weapon near the end. If I do only one thing I have a shot at doing it well. I learned my lesson since the FediJam last month :P

The level design is mostly done, there's one boss fight remaining.

so 1 day in my timezone passed, time to see the result of day 1: 2024-10-05_20-36-29(1).gif there's currently no enemies, and cannon's aim is so bad :/ hope i will finish my game until deadline...

alright. the cyan "x"s are like portals that are not letting you to leave the area

I really like the theme! I've been having a good time making some art for my game. Not sure if I'm as far along as I would have hoped, but I guess it's still quite some time left on the compo! Untitled.jpgScreenshot 2024-10-05 191615.jpg

Day 0.75 - Our beezness is going fine

Another meal-break, another post. Hope you're all going well and are enjoying this jam as much as we are.

Everything is going fine

No, really. No irony here. Our first day is going smoothly as heck. Everything we do seems to be working great. Let's hope the future will be as nice. So what have we made so far? A bunch of thing we can't show!

Bouteille has done quite a lot of work on the code to implement a big chunk of the game logic and mechanics, and I've polished the general game design. But hey, I can't leave you without showing anything at all. Do you want to see the first draft of a moving bee swarm?

swarm.gif

And the assets are on their way too: Capture d’écranem2024-10-05/em19-54-38.jpg

The next thing for us is to set the godot project with the correct options, resolutions etc. And to add the different assets into the game. Then we'll have a bunch of work to make everything behave (beehive?) as it should, and a lot of work on the UI. That's the plan for this evening and tomorrow I guess.

Our brains are tired and need nutrients

Hope you all take care of yourselves. We all need to take breaks from time to time, to rest our brains, and to give our bodies the things they need.

day0-75.JPG

And now, it's time for us to drink a little coffee, and to work on our game. Good luck everybody!

wakey wakey spag and hetti!

after barely being able to sleep due to Being Too Excited To Work On Gaem, i am now awake to Work On Gaem, but I'll mess around with music a little while I'm gettin some breakfast of champions into me!

I haven't enjoyed LD this much in literal years! :smile_cat:

Going slow...

I'm going a lot slower than I wanted. But getting some progress nonetheless. Had some difficult moments when I realized that generating all these fish procedurally in canvas wasn't a good idea performance-wise.

Decided to just keep going, but with less fish on screen. =/

ls561.png

The idea is that you need to take these other fish to the green portal. The fish will be spread in the "world" and you need to find them, guide them through the obstables, disarm some traps and finish with at least X% of the initial fish in the world.

At the moment I'll start implementing the level flow, game over, etc. After that I'll start with obstacles and traps.

We are live making our LD56 game!

ScreenShot00001.png

Twitch stream: www.twitch.tv/david_simonsson

We're in, and I've additional restrictions on myself!

I promised myself this jam that I wouldn't go too hard. I have a tendency to work long hours without enough breaks, and stay up far later than I should. That's normal, but nowadays when my day job as gameplay programmer demands more and more of my energy, it's no longer something I can keep up! I feel so oooold.

The other restriction I promised myself was that I would not make a game with combat. I love action combat games, but they take a lot of manpower and I'm one programmer. Smartwilliam is helping me out as always, but we'd both agreed we'd try to make something more story-based and simple this time round.

We're going with a game about a man who keeps fireflies to light his way, and scare off the shadows that lurk:
