Last chance to rate ... Brainspace, a neural network design game

Only 12 hours left in the rating period! For anyone interested in AI and neural networks, I present Brainspace, a game where you design a neural network with drag & drop to solve particular classification problems. Just so you get an idea what it looks like, below is a neural network design that solves the first problem:

brainspace-in-action-2.png

I managed to make a reasonable looking game in 48 hours, with help of existing libraries, in particular Tensorflow.js and Baklava.js. I am impressed with how easy to use the libraries are. I didn't get much time to balance the game though. At first I thought, this must be one of the hardest gamest to balance! But while playing it, I myself learned a thing or two about neural network design, and in spite of the limited variation of classification problems, it was a great learning experience.

I plan to make this into a tool for education and experimentation, and want to include visualisation features: what the tensors look like, and visualisation of the neural weights and intermediate data.

Play the game here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/54/brainspace

Below is a solution that solves all problems. It's a bit overcomplicated, showing off branching and merging. It can be done with a simpler network.

Thank you!

I wanted to thank everyone who took the time to play my compo game. I hope you have a great day!

Last minute rush to take all the space

You forgot to play and rate games? You've made a two player duelling game to duel the possibility of people testing your game? You are in a rush to test other games and reach 20 ratings yourself?

Say no more, we are basically brothers at this point! You probably also like to sabotage your own self quite frequently. Well, now you can as my game only takes one finger per player to play, you could play against yourself even with one hand, hmm?

Or maybe you could grab a person closest to you and challenge them to a duel. It's your choice and your SPACE in Quarosel, a battle over screen-estate.

quarosel.gif

See, I've made this gif alone as well, that's why orange is not countering green's space filling attack over here. It's not because orange wants to lose, orange is very strong and would have all the space if green wasn't so greedy about being the star of the gif.

Btw I'm sorry about this post, I actually built the game while testing it with my partner so it's a fun duel. Here's a bit of dev trivia: at first the scoring was simply about who has more percent of the screen by the end of the game but that turned out to be a bit boring as the first few moves take way more space than later ones and the winner would be often decided by the half of the match.
To fix this I made it so that you get a score after each cut corresponding to the percentage of the available space at the moment of cutting, this way the tension can really go up until the end as comebacks are much more possible, kinda like this LD jam's rating period...I hope.

So please test my game and tell me about yours!

Space out with Quarosel now!

Filter by danger.

There are a few games with 18/19 ratings that need ratings filter by danger and rate those. image.png

Linux Jammers, help us out! :-)

We got the (dumb?) idea of writing a game engine for this jam and hence our game is Linux only (a result of not having windows installed and lack of time), so naturally we’ve had a hard time getting plays... because of this we're in the danger zone of not getting enough ratings. We would love the feedback and this is why we're reaching out. Please feel free to help us if you find the time, thanks! <3

Just shouting out my favorite LD54 entry from the danger queue

Been hanging out in the danger queue/rescue filter today trying to hike games over the scoring bar, and I feel like I struck gold with this one.

It's an absurd story where you try to find enough room to sit down in a train. Interactions with the game's characters had me laughing out loud multiple times.

seat.png

The name is Take a Seat: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/54/take-a-seat

It currently has 17 ratings and I think that an experience this distinctive deserves to cross the scoring threshold. Maybe others will enjoy it as much as I did, too.

The Essential Guide to Phoenix Dryer Vent Cleaning

Ensuring the safety and functionality of your home's appliances is crucial for maintaining a secure living environment. One often-overlooked aspect of home maintenance is dryer vent cleaning, which plays a significant role in preventing potential fire hazards and ensuring the efficient operation of your dryer. While some may consider taking on this task themselves, understanding why call a professional to clean your vents is essential can make a significant difference in safeguarding your home and loved ones. Let's delve into the key reasons why entrusting professionals with your Phoenix dryer vent cleaning needs is crucial for optimal safety and functionality.

Expert Knowledge and Equipment:

One of the primary advantages of hiring professionals for your dryer vent cleaning needs is their expert knowledge and specialized equipment. Professionals possess the expertise to navigate the complexities of your dryer vent system, ensuring a thorough and comprehensive cleaning process that may not be achievable through DIY methods. Their specialized tools allow for a more effective and efficient cleaning process, leaving your dryer vent spotless and your home safer.

Ensuring Effective Debris Removal:

Professional dryer vent cleaners have the necessary skills to identify and remove lint and debris effectively, minimizing the risk of potential fire hazards. Lint accumulation within the vent can restrict airflow, causing the dryer to overheat and potentially ignite a fire. By entrusting professionals with the task, you can ensure that your dryer vent is free from obstructions and operating safely, promoting a secure environment for your household.

Fire Hazard Prevention:

One of the most critical reasons for professional Phoenix dryer vent cleaning is the prevention of fire hazards. Lint buildup within the dryer vent is highly flammable, and without proper cleaning, it can pose a significant risk to your home and family. Professional cleaners are trained to thoroughly remove all traces of lint, significantly reducing the possibility of a dryer-related fire and ensuring the safety of your home.

Promoting Efficient Home Maintenance:

By hiring professionals for your dryer vent cleaning needs, you can ensure efficient and effective home maintenance. Regular cleaning not only reduces the risk of fire hazards but also promotes the optimal performance of your dryer, extending its lifespan and minimizing the need for costly repairs or replacements. Investing in professional services is a proactive step toward protecting your home and maintaining its efficiency.

Safe and Healthy Living Environment:

A clean and well-maintained dryer vent contributes to a safer and healthier living environment for your family. By eliminating potential fire hazards and ensuring proper airflow, professional services help create a space that is free from the risks associated with clogged dryer vents, promoting peace of mind and comfort for you and your loved ones.

In summary, the advantages of hiring professionals for your Phoenix dryer vent cleaning needs are evident in the expert knowledge, effective debris removal, fire hazard prevention, efficient home maintenance, and the promotion of a safe and healthy living environment. Prioritize the safety and well-being of your home by considering professional dryer vent cleaning services today.dryer vent cleaning.jpg

Composers and sound designers, please show us your work and discuss audio!

Hi everyone! I would really love to hear your work on sounds and music for this jam! Feel free to share a link in the comments section  I played some games with amazing soundtracks and I would also love to hear and discuss about other's process!

Here's my experience from this jam! Seagull Island _ L'île aux Goélands by sebdegraff, QuentinVLF, navenka, KayaCarlton - Google Chrome 20.10.2023 14em08/em13.png

First ideas and concepts: - For our game Seagull Island (picture above - https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/54/seagull-island-lile-aux-goelands), we aimed to create a relaxing atmosphere for the player, allowing them (you) to feel at home while also getting away from life's troubles. The main audio concept was to unlock and blend various layers based on the village you construct, providing a sense of evolution and achievement. At first, we considered using chiptune music to go along with the pixelart graphics but it was soon abandoned to work with acoustics instruments (with a touch of synthesizers of course :smirk: ).

Background soundscape and exploring - generating ideas: - To set the mood, I started synthesizing the sounds of the ocean and wind using a Korg MS20. Exploring these white noise patches led me to discover various sound effects that we'll implement during the jam, including the boat and the radio tuning in when you place the antennas.

Music in layers: - The music composition began with a 1-minute ukulele loop that I recorded in the morning while sipping coffee. This loop serves as the primary musical element of the game... until you build the radio and the antennas to hear other instruments playing along! A round and soft bass is played on the Moog Grandmother with the nice saturation of it's mixer section, accompanied by two melodic lines on an Irish banjo. For percussion, I opted for various objects I recorded (with a Zoom H2n) to give an organic feel (a mate packet for the shaker, the banjo drum's skin, various hits on a plastic dustcover, etc.). I tried to get a sense of fullness with the instrumentation but I still wanted it to breath.

20231020em130714/em2.jpg

For those interested in the sound effects and feedback, here's a suggestive list: - UI sounds: hand drum and tambourine - Radio static sound: fm patch on the Elektron Digitone - Seagull: free-to-use sample found on the internet + crushed paper for the wings - Boat: Korg MS20 (saturated white noise with pulse lfo) - Plant store: wind chime - ...

__

My usual style is typically dark electronic and industrial music, so it was nice to return to acoustic instruments. It felt fresh and was really enjoyable!

And you? What was your process?

Postcards Update 1 Now Live

I just finished the first update to Postcards, with a LOT of polish, typo fixes, some slight graphical improvements, and a few relatively minor bug fixes.

One of the biggest features of this update is that dense walls of text were massaged into a more readable state, and many passages were pulled apart to increase both interactivity and readability. This was the biggest point of critical feedback on the game, so if it deterred you before, come give it a second look!

If you haven't heard of Postcards before... it is a sweet, meditative interactive fiction game where you take a backpack tour of Europe and write postcards to your co-game developer and Ludum Dare buddy, Paul (so named because "Paul" rhymes with "pen pal", in case you were wondering).

The game had a lot of newness, being my first Twine game and first Compo, but I was very pleased with it, and other people were too so I kept working on it. Now I'm even more pleased with it, and I hope you will be too.

Here's a little comparison of the original and the newly polished first letter that you receive very early in the game: old letter downscaled.png new letter downscaled.png

As you can see, a big difference. Letters are the most text-heavy and least interactive passages, so I tried to help readability and to make them stick out a bit more from the rest of the game.

If you want to be immersed in a backpack trip of Europe for a little while (~25 minutes), please consider playing the new and updated game. Then, if you want, compare it to the original, which you can still download from the Itch page and play by clicking on the "index" file. A few more ratings of the original game - which conveyed the story fine, just in a less polished manner - would be awesome, but as this is only Update 1 of 4 (check out the roadmap on the Itch page), I would greatly appreciate comments over on Itch.io to help the game long term as Ludum Dare winds down.
