Atlas - From Concept to Game

Hi there, we wanted to share our conception and art style process. Check out our game here https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/49/atlas-the-clownlifter

First we started with some crude sketches to get an idea of how the game should look like. The game was meant to be played in portrait mode, due to restrictions and the time limit, most people will still play it in landscape mode 202110021349_concept.jpeg

After that, looking for the style we want to use. I have come across strobridge litho, a company that made old circus posters, so they where a big influence in the game photo1633177289.jpeg

Now that we had the color palette and the main concept down, we just had to create the sprites. Our process is as follows. Paint it => Take a picture => clean it up => colorize => animate

Then merge everything in the artboard, replacing colored blocks with sprites artboard.png

We hope you enjoyed this and please check out our game https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/49/atlas-the-clownlifter

Need ratings? Then rate people's games, it's simple

I'm seeing a lot of posts around like "hey I only need three more ratings" from people who already have 25+ ratings and have rated <8 games themselves. Ludum Dare is not about advertising your game, it's a joint community where we all play each other's games. If you only rate a handful of games but keep spamming your games on the feed, other games who actually did their fair amount of ratings will not qualify.

The LD website judging system lives on you doing your part and rating other people's games and receiving ratings in return. If you want a good score and some nice ratings, you should play as many games as possible so those games can qualify too, instead of begging on the feed for ratings. You have 2 days and all you need to do is play 20 to qualify. If you really want ratings, rate 100, you will get 50-70 ratings back and in the process help lots of games to qualify. Please stop this selfish mindset that people should play your games without you playing other people's.

Thank You All !

So I Updated The Game

The art of Alchemeow

Hi there, I saw that some players as well as some of my friends wanted to see my art process,so I'm tring to show you this.

Please feel free to play, rate and leave comments :3

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/49/alchemeow

Our group members are in different countries, so we communicate by Discord.

  • First, as we discussed about the gameplay, I drew a quick sktch to show my idea. image0.jpg

  • Next,I did this in Photoshop with a correct screen size. image02.jpg

-Initially, the pot was always on the left of the screen, then I thought if I move it to right of the screen (in front of the cat), it can make the animation procces more simple: The smoke coming from the pot obscures the cat, we can change the image of cat without any other animation or vfx. image03.jpg

-Then I finished the background and also set the tone for the game's atmosphere. image04.JPG

-We then decided on the items to be used for alchemy, and a few little surprises (e.g. a spider on a spider's web, a moon that can be plucked if you opened the window.) image05.JPG

-Just draw it (:з)∠) The cat is divided into many different "parts" for easy "assembly". (No Animals Were Harmed In The Making Of This Game) ALL_small.jpg

-Tilkey did the UI design, and I just added some texture to it to make it more appropriate to the style of the game. em05ref/em.png image06.JPG

Finally, Done XD! We hope you enjoyed this!

Have you seen the jokes?

My game, Overclocked, is about an AI trying to optimize its systems so it can stop overheating and do what it wants to do without being held back.

overclocked-defrag.png

But I'm actually worried that people might not have gotten the references!

I've been programming since 1987, so I'm clearly of a different generation than most participants in the jam. It's entirely possible that a significant number of you might not realize why that screenshot is funny. But if you used MS-DOS in the early 1990s, you'll recognize the color palette and visual style of old text-mode interfaces. And modern versions of Windows don't promote doing disk defragmentation anymore because it takes forever on big drives, doesn't provide a meaningful performance benefit, and actually hurts SSDs more than it helps, so even the idea of "defrag" in the first place might be an unfamiliar concept to a lot of people.

Likewise, the video snow and CRT power-down animation are effects that haven't been relevant for over ten years, and even in the later years you didn't tend to see them because signal quality was usually pretty good and displays powered off quickly and cleanly. It's recent enough that younger people might have distant memories of them, but I imagine that for a lot of people it's only familiar as a graphical effect instead of something they grew up with.

There's also a joke in the ending sequence, but the game is hard enough that I don't think very many people have actually finished it. This one isn't an obscure reference, just a piece of deadpan comedy, but it's challenging to get to it even with the cheat code.

But I won't spoil that joke! If you want to see it, go try out the game and see if you can beat it!

Thank you!!!

Thanks to all the people that took the time to play, rate, or comment on our game.

This jam was very interesting. Our team is composed of only two people, and we had to work hard to deliver something playable and complete. Of course, it is far from something perfect and balanced but the feedback has helped us a lot, so let's hope if we can participate in the next jam, we will do a better job.

In the meantime if you haven't played our game, go and do it :P.

How do you like the trailer?

I'm new to video creation, it's easier for me to create games. I made a small trailer with our game. The game is difficult, but really cool.

a post mortem of sorts (for the game I attempted to make)

post mortem is a bit of an exaggeration. Won't lie I think I did a bit rubbish but there was an idea there that needs a bit more developing (I have a main project that has most of my attention. Anyway I made a video talking about this stuff so I'll put that here.
