Taking a Break From my Current Game and…

I’m doing the LD warmup weekend! Yeehaw!!

I need a break from my current project. It’s not going fast enough for me. I’m going to enter the warmup jam to speed things up for me. 😀

I haven’t decided what to make yet, but I’ll post again when I have an idea!

I’m in!! My second attempt at Ludum Dare

Okay guys I’m in!! This is my second LD and I’m going to make a game or at the very least I’m going to try. Last time I used Flash but I’ve been learning Java slowly so this will be my first attempt at making some sort of finished product that I can call a game in Java. I’m hopping to learn a lot and no matter what I know it will be fun!!

Coding: Java in Eclipse

Art: GraphicsGale or Photoshop

Err.. yes, I’m in and stuff.

See title.

It’s my 7th time now, and wow… It’s been some time since the 18th Dare, eh?

Anyways, onto the tools of my needs!

Language: JS + Canvas
Library: Probably none.

Art-sy stuff: Paint.NET
Bleeps and blops: BFXR
Music: Err.. Uhm. If I have time. And enough skills.

Crispy stuff: Pringles! And cheese puffs!
Drinking stuff: Caffeine (Coffee, Energy Drinks), Water

General plan: Panix for at least 1 hour at the start and the end of the compo.

And I don’t have any more info to share. I haven’t done much interesting stuff in the past 3 months, besides working on my IRC bot a bit, and creating a chatting application in Python. (The server is really unstable on Windows, though.)

See ya!

My Warmup Game Idea – Staraga

So I have my warmup game idea. It’s going to be a remake of Galaga with some extra features. The title – as the title of this post suggests – will be “Staraga”.

The extra features will be:

  • Individual enemy movement behaviors (that is, more than the entire wave moving left and right)
  • Multiple weapons (both guns and missiles)
  • Bosses

I will be making it in Unity using the Orthello 2D framework. I hope that I can get it fairly polish (even if that takes after the time limit I have set for myself) and then put it on Flash Game License for sale.

I am giving myself from noon EST on the 7th to noon EST on the 10th to complete this game, but I will take more time for polish if I need to.

Are you ready? I sure am!

Edit: Woops! I meant on the 7th, not the 6th!

In for my 3rd dare :)

So I’m in for the 3rd time in a row. I was satisfied with my first entry however my second entry has been a semi failure. Hoping to make better this time :)

Here is the usual tool list:
code: EcLiPsE + libGDX
art: aSePRITE
sfx: bFxR
music: FrUity LoOps

I might also use Construct 2 if I were to make a platformer :)

Aside from that I’m still working on my October Challenge game PowerUp, an iPad multiplayer shooter (mini shameless plug)! We are currently doing the final arts and visual effects. Development has been slowed down but is steady (we kind of burned out). I guess we switched from ‘Sprint mode’ to ‘Endurance mode’. Anyway, the game will be released on the 17th of January!

Oh and we are in beta (prototype arts, final gameplay) so if you own an iPad and you are interested drop me a message! (second mini shameless plug)

Good luck to everybody!!!

Hack-a-Jam is TOMORROW!

Ready up! The Hack-a-Jam is back, and starting tomorrow!!

To join, you must create an account in the Posting section of the website, and then start posting! Note: All posts have been deleted since the last Hack-a-Jam, so that is why only I have posts there. However, I do encourage you to become social in the forums and ask questions.

The Hack-a-Jam is a regular game development competition/jam where you must create a game within a set amount of time. However, it is not like any other gaming competition/jam. In the Hack-a-Jam, there is an infinite amount of winning categories, and no overall winner. While winners still must have superb games to win, there are no set winning categories, and there will always be multiple winners. Also, the theme will be voted on by the community, after they are submitted in the forums (Posting section) under the topic Theme Posting, in the Rules and Announcements forum.

To prove how unique the winning categories are, these are previous winning categories and other possible categories:

Most Psychedelic Visuals
Most Deaf People After Hearing The Game
Most Angry Bongos Involved
Most Rage-free
Most rage-induced
Most Suggestive Content Without Crossing The Line
Shortest Functional Game
Most Random and/or Annoying Sound When Picking Things Up
Most Things On Screen Without Lag or Crash

Like most game development competitions, there are rules, however, the rules here are more laid back and simple:

1. All game content must be created within the set time. Note: You can use other music, placeholder graphics, etc. as long as you are allowed to!
2. Your game is not required to follow the theme, but would greatly improve your chances of winning. Unless almost every other game is not following the theme, it is almost guaranteed that your game won’t win anything.
3. You must work alone, and you must create everything included in the game.
4. All game creation tools are permitted, such as GameMaker, Photoshop, Flash, Paint, etc.
5. All game extensions/DLLs are permitted. If you want to make it multiplayer (if you are using GameMaker), go ahead and use 39dll.

What do the winners get?

The winners will have the opportunity to post a message on the Hack-a-Jam website itself, whether it be something random and funny, like “I LOVE banana chicken pancakes”, or an advertisement such as “Play my new game TODAY!”. The winners will also get badges to show off to their friends and the gaming community.

The official 4th Hack-a-Jam starts tomorrow (Friday), so ready up for a double game jam week (if you are joining to Ludum Dare too next week)!

My First LD

This is my first Ludum Dare and I’m both scared and excited about it. Working under pressure with short deadlines is something I actually like, so I think I’m going to enjoy it!

I’m planning on using:

Development – Unity;

Art – Pixelmator;

Sound – cfxr;

Music – Audacity, iSequence HD, Milkytracker (and probably some other stuff).

Can’t wait!

I’m in for the second time!

This is my entrance post. Pretty excited about competing for a second time in LD48.

The tools I’ll be using are Unity, Paint.net, Audacity and sfxr.

Good luck everybody!

I’m In!

This is my second Ludum Dare – I participated in LD24, but ran out of time due to poor practice and design!

This time, I’m going web-only, using JavaSript and the Canvas.  I’ve been considering using the Impact game engine (quite possibly the best $99 I have ever spent, that engine is boss!), but am also experimenting with rolling my own framework for this LD.  I’ll be working on a basic framework this weekend, figuring out standard audio and drawing tools.  When the Compo rolls around, I’ll decide whether to go Impact or Ad-Hoc.

Can’t Wait!

Videogame Name Generator is Fun

How much inspiration can you get just from a title? I’m reminded of the scene in Ed Wood, where Johnny Depp is trying to pitch his movie ideas, and starts just spouting off titles… “Bride… Of the Atom.” “Dr…. Acula.”

To that end, I give you the Video Game Name Generator:

http://videogamena.me/

A few coming-when? gems:

  1. Mega Zombie Jam
  2. Wild Monkey Over Normandy
  3. Deadly Tetris 1942
  4. British Acid Revolution
  5. Red Hot NASCAR Pimps
  6. Jackie Chan’s Octopus Camp
  7. Bloody Lego in the Outback
  8. Olympic Ping Pong 3000
  9. Pokemon Dance Party
  10. Mind Bending Croquet
  11. Amphibious Hoedown Rangers
  12. Nudist Drug-Dealing Bastards
  13. Black Jazz Hop-A-Bout
  14. Full Metal Love X-Treme
  15. Subterranean Kung-fu Story
  16. Neon Matador Hell
  17. Kinect Plunger Mayhem
  18. Medieval Karate Castle

I think for LD25, I may have to see if I can get a good game idea going from one of these random titles, if I can make one fit with the announced theme.

I’m trying to figure out whether I can make “Wild Monkey Over Normandy”. Hm…

In, with speed mode activated !

It’ll be a [24h;36h] participation for many reasons, but I can’t wait to participate, as I now have a ready multi-platforms OpenGL engine prepared for this LD !

Tools:

Last LD, my weakness had been to deal with the builds problems for Windows and Mac at the last moment (as I use Linux). I finally gave up to build executable for these systems… This time, I’m ready!

Good luck everyone, have a lot of fun!

Busy weekend, but heck, I’m in!

I will make an attempt to create my second game for LD, despite the festive season being really busy for me. I will most likely create a game for the 72 hour jam instead of the main compo though.

Tools I’m likely to use:

  • FlashDevelop (with Flashpunk)
  • Paint.NET
  • CGMusic (or I may make my own if I have enough time)
  • Ogmo Editor
  • Bfxr

This may be the last flash game I make for LD. I am planning to make future LD entries using HTML5 technologies. Any suggestions for HTML5 frameworks I can use?

Three.js is awesome for canvas/webgl stuff in 3D

I’m in for 1st time

This will be my first LD. I think there maybe won’t be enough time, as I’m busy next weekend, but I’ll try. The game will be in HTML5. I hope the game will be  without any game-breaking bugs, and playable.

I’m using:

Development – Notepad ++ and Mozilla Firefox;

Art – Gimp andd Inkscape;

Sound –Audacity;

Music – Audacity, LMMS.

What language are you using? I would assume JavaScript+HTML5 because of your development tools, but it’d be nice to know for sure. :)

Yes, HTML5 and Javascript.

In for the Jam!

Probably going to use Three.js (it’s awesome, try it!) and my own generative music system.
Some real world events are keeping me from participating in the compo. Weekend visitors 😉

Other possible tools I’ll use: Tiled, Paint.net, Blender, Bfxr, Open MPT

Good luck everyone!

I’m in!

This will be my third time.

I was first in LD23 and this time I might do the jam because of real life reasons. My tools:

Language: Java
IDE: Eclipse
Graphics:Paint.NET
Sound: Bfxr (and maybe audacity)
Timelapse: Chronolapse (if I get around to uploading it)

I’m looking forward to this one. Let’s see how it goes.

We Jammin’

Ludum Dare upcoming! My fifth LD already! This is my I’m in post!

Tools

Programming: Game Maker 8

Art: Paint.NET

Music: Ableton Live + my trustworthy Roland SH-201 synthesizer

Those are generally the things I tend to use. I hope that my fifth Ludum Dare will be just as awesome, or perhaps even more awesome as my previous Dares!

See you in the IRC!

Sanguine

I’m in

I’ll be using Flashdevelop (probably FlashPunk) for code

graphics: TileStudio (if I go for pixelgraphics) or Flash (vectorgraphics, small size!).

For soundFX I’m going for voicegenerated noise.

Music  I’m not so sure about. Might just try a looper with guitar and stuff or  Famitracker. Maybe brush off an idea for a musicgenerator coming weekend (or do a warmup game ofcourse).

Oh, I might want to use my C64  organ, so I have to declare it:

http://coding.goerp.nl/4/AORGN13T.zip

Sourcecode included, for best results use VICE C64 emulator with SID settings: Engine: reSID-FP and SID model 8580, SID filters enabled.

Use F1 F3 and F5 for different sounds.

Ludum Dare 25 – My first Time

Oh my god, ludum dare is coming up and I can’t wait. Here are the tools I’m planning to use:

1. Game Maker Engine

2. Photoshop

3. Pickle

I may use game maker only to draw my graphics, who knows and I might use some music generator to have some sounds for my game.

Also, I might do a little warm up this weekend to see how I do…
