My theme musings

Work is well under way for “Suddenly, Ninjas” and I wanted to share a little more about what I’ve done so far.

Here is the transcript of my discussion with my stream about how to use the 10 seconds theme, with non-rejected ideas in bold:

10 seconds per round?

10 seconds (lat/long)?

10 second long game?

“10 seconds” name of place/event?

10 seconds of music repeating

10 seconds again and again

Something happens every 10 seconds?

  • Vehicle/Running speed up
    • Simple
    • Endless gameplay
    • Definite end, high score mechanic
  • Ninja/Dinosaur/Alien attack!
    • Funny
    • Twitch
    • Engaging
  • World’s slowest rhythm game
    • Unique (in a bad way)
    • Emergency game
  • Change perspective/character – win while you’re in their perspective
    • Unique (in a good way)
    • Easy to game or unfair
    • Adventure game/maze w/ several AI “players” you alternately control
    • Low fun
  • Take damage
    • Urgent
    • Race/maze/platformer
  • Find cover/avoid something that lasts 10 seconds/every 10 seconds
    • Antifun
    • Intense
    • Storytelling in downtime while covering
    • Possibly do something every 10 seconds
  • Turn ends after 10 seconds
    • Puzzle game
    • TBS
    • Antifun – mistakes, just missed it

10 second places?

Ten 2nds

This is a prelude of what is to come from Team Recusants.

Egyptian Mafia “The Stoners” kidnaps the family of famous racecar driver “John Jon Johnson” and forces him to take second place to their man and only their man in ten World Series races.

I love this idea. Very creative. Can’t wait to play it.

2 hours in, time for some sleep.

Well, its gone 4 am where I am and Im pretty tired. I have made a good start on my currently untitled game. Below is what I have at the moment. It looks like nothing currently

Holo LD27 2hrs in

Customary “I’m In”

First post for posterity! (And so I can look back in shame if I don’t finish.) This is going to be my first LD – let’s see if I can pull it off. The theme is definitely a brain-teaser, so I hope I’ll nail down the idea by tomorrow morning.

Will be using FreeBASIC and its FBIde editor (just started learning it, so it’ll be a good practice), Photoshop for teh grafixx, and Bfxr/Sfxr for sound (if have time to add sound.)

Progress is better than regress.

I have a basic idea of what I’m going to be doing for my game, but it needs some refining.

I also made the rookie mistake of thinking of a plot before I thought of the gameplay. But it was what I came up with concerning the theme. I really like the theme, and I do find it very challenging.

So far, my inspirations are Inception and the Chronicles of Narnia, as far as how time is represented. Right now, the working title for my game is “6:1”, and it concerns a worried sister, whose brother has gone missing in a mysterious dimension. Travel between the two dimensions is easy, but you need to find your brother quickly. For every second you spend in your home dimension, 6 seconds pass in your brother’s dimension. This comes to 10 seconds per minute.

[SPOILER ALERT: Your brother’s odd dimension is actually Earth.]

I already have some early graphics, as well as the song for your home dimension, called Tempor.

Brainstorming

I know from past experience with this sort of thing that running headlong into coding after the first spark of an idea tends to end badly (for me, anyway), so I’ve been having a coffee and a smoke and brainstorming a few ideas to see what sticks. I figured I might as well write some down here to save myself finding out I’ve been doing the same thing as someone else. That and I’m not gonna have much time to write later.

Ten Seconds (working title, obv.)

A pistol duelling game that tells the story of ten “seconds” who have to defend the honour of the unluckiest five pairs of duellists in history, where the principals in each duel have shot each other dead and a deciding round is fought between their seconds because of Reasons. You play five of these duellists against opposing seconds of varying skill, with a suitably fiddly aiming process to liven things up a bit.

Well, better get to it then.

Idea…?

Pretty sure I’ve got the basic idea for this all down. It’s going to be a survival dodging game where every 10 seconds you are given, or get reduced powers as well as adding new enemies and obstacles. It shouldn’t be too hard to make, that is if I get off my lazy ass and start, but we’ll see what happens 😉

My idea

10 seconds.  That’s what you need.  You are a dictator of a small country who just gained admittance to the Olympic games.  You’ve staked your entire fortune on the fact that your country will win exactly 10 silver medals.  You have exactly 10 athletes competing in 10 different events.  Make it happen.

It’s good to be British. Motivation abound in this mug.

Kerinova Studios LD27 Report- Hour: 2

Ah, the first of my bi-hourly posts. There isn’t a point in adding a picture here, as I haven’t really gotten anything done yet.

I love lists, and so, here is the list of what I got done:

  • Came up with the idea for the game, as well as genre, and art style.
    • The game will be a Platformer (Yes, a Platformer, but in my defense, it is my first LD48), in which you have 10 seconds to beat the game. There are power-ups in game that add seconds to your time limit however. But, there are also explorable areas, that give you rewards if you explore. You will have to balance gaining more time, with getting the highest score, or best gear.
    • The game’s name is currently Direct Interval.
  • Started the project- Set up the icons and logos, ect
  • Imported my public open source Collision, Tile, and GameState engine
  • Added the base animation code
  • Optimized my workplace
  • Began work on the Player

Before the next post, my goals are:

  1. Don’t get tired.
  2. Add player and level code, to make something playable.

We’re In!

Right now i’m waiting for my GF to start with the designs, so, right now i’m in the brainstorming time.

The tools that we’re gonna use are:

  • Construct2 (thanks to the last LD for the license discount ).
  • Pickle – PyxelEdit
  • Balsamiq Mockups (for the brainstorm)
  • SFXR (Great Tool!, thanks LD)
  • Internet (duh…)
  • Some other design programs.

(It took me more than 10 seconds to write this post, damn!… Oh, idea!… Not…)

My Game Idea

After doing some writing I finally came up with my idea…

WP_000981

The game starts with showing a large expansive environment and at the end of it is a giant man sitting on top of a pyramid. This man has a special power that allows him to shoot and kill the player wherever the player is, to do this though, the man must charge up his pyramid eye which takes 10 seconds. So every 10 seconds regardless of the players location, he or she will be killed. The game is about finding a way to stop the man from doing this by destroying him. The player does this by experimenting with different things in the environment and getting closer to the pyramid man. Every 10 seconds the player will start fresh and can get closer and closer to the goal through trial and error and figuring out what will take the least amount of time and will possibly work before the man charges up his eye again and shoots the player. So it’s sort of a puzzle game in that sense. I’m really excited about this idea, and I can’t wait to get started. Good luck Everyone!

Sneaking in for a second go

Alright I’m in! This’ll be my second LD48 solo comp. LD26 was a success for me in that I actually got something out there and although I don’t have as much time this weekend I will give it a try!

I’ll be using:

» Engine: Game Maker Studio
» Graphics: Sketchbook Pro/MS Paint
» SFX: Random noises/piano
» Music: Electric Piano
» Audio: Audacity
» Hardware: X220 Tablet, Yamaha P-95, Zoom H2n

Much luck to all to get something done!

Let’s do this thing

I’m in for my second LD ever!  I’ll probably just use Game Maker since it’s so easy, as well as Photoshop for the art.

This should be an interesting theme to work with…

I’m in.

I’m in.
I’m in.
I’m in.
Thank you.

Tengo una idea!

Bueno, bueno, bueno…
