LD32 April 17–20, 2015

I’ll hopefully be in

I really should be finishing homework instead of posting this but oh well. I’ll hopefully be in after missing LD31 due to being overseas at the time. If I don’t get bombarded with homework during the first week of term next week, I’ll defiantly be entering. If I do have work I’ll probably just spend one day working on a smaller game.

I’ll probably be getting a friend to help me with graphics and am not sure what they’ll use other than photoshop and a graphics tablet.

I’ll be using:

– Gamemaker Studio

– SFXR

– Paint (great for some simple concepts)

My goal is to make a fun little game that isn’t buggy like my ld30 entry. I also want to get some actual nice music this time that isn’t generated.

Are we aloud to use our own framework?

I was just wandering if i can use my framework if it was made before the Jam,

or do we have to make all of the code from scratch?

If you’re doing the jam: Do what you like.

You don’t have to make your framework open-source (i.e., according to the OSI definition). You also don’t have to provide source code or link to it before the game starts. You don’t have to make it available to anyone else. This makes sense—you don’t have to provide the source code to Unity, either, so why would you have to provide source code to your own framework?

Of Carrots And Blood is back! ( no LD32 :/ )

Hey guys,

we most likely won’t be able to participate in Ludum Dare this time :( BUT we have been working on our last LD31 Jam entry Of Carrots And Blood and we just released it on itch.io for free for Windows and Mac. We have added powerups, different enemy types, a global highscore for the single player and we have also added a local Co-op mode (which is the most fun) with a big surprise in the end! So please check it out :)

Download OF CARROTS AND BLOOD on itch.io here!

And for those of you who already know the Jam version, it would be really cool, if you could compare the two versions and tell us here in the comments, if we applied your feedback for the better or worse 😉 More feedback much appreciated!

Im in.

Well well my second time doing LD and im am…..

freaking exited.

I’ll either be using Unity with Gimp or Blender or

Gamemaker. Im not quite sure yet.

We need to talk… about talking…

tl;dr – I created a slack group, you can get an invite here.

I know we all dearly love our IRC channels; it’s our history, our culture, our misteps and foibles immortalized forever on codedojo … wait… where did the quotes on Seth’s site go?

Anyway – IRC is oh so old, and I’m sure a lot of people will be annoyed at me for saying, not good enough any longer. This is why I created a Ludum Dare Slack!

I know! I know! I’m a luddite too, I use vim, I occasionally use mutt, I like old. But, I also like new shiny features: inline images, GIFS(!), code syntax highlighting, mobile clients, offline messages, pinned notifications, embedded YT videos and tweets, a friendly API, and other such wonders.

We’re a visual community, we need visual communication

Because we do still love IRC, I’ve even created a special #irc channel on Slack that echoes everything said in IRC to slack, so you’ll never miss a beat. It doesn’t message back to IRC yet (I didn’t want to piss anyone off in IRC) but it’s pretty easy to get that set up if we ever wanted it.

Feel free to sign up!

Chat here: http://ludumdare.slack.com
Get an invite here: http://ld-slack.herokuapp.com

P.S. @Mike, I’m happy to hand over ownership/control to yourself or any other LD trustee at your request of course. Just trying to help the community out!

P.P.S For the paranoid, the invite system does not do anything with your email address other than send you an invite to slack, this seems to be the only good (non-manual) way to do it. Code for the inviter is available here for the still-paranoid

We already got one. But no-one invited you, apparently

I use both IRC (weechat, most freenode channels) and Slack (our game studio, integrated with trello as well), and -tan dan dannnn – I use slack inside IRC (see slack’s documentation on how to activate it 😉 )

Supporting Low End GPUs.

So.. is there anyone out there who would be angry if a game didn’t run properly on something less powerful than.. say.. Intel HD 3000?

Also, if you *do* have a pretty limited computer would you rather have:

– Reduced graphical features but full screen, 60fps?

– All the graphical features but running in a window, 60fps?

– Limited graphical features but full screen and 60fps?

– Full screen, all the graphics, but only really getting about 30-40fps?

Phew!

Back in the day when I used to game on an ancient laptop, I would always prefer a higher framerate over prettier graphics. So many games require quick reflexes and solid response times, and that enhances the feel and fun of a game to me much more than it looking amazing but stuttering all over the place.

I think it really depends on the gameplay.

oh good it’s next weekend.

Mind you, sol_hsa’s post is a good point – I should prepare. But… well, seeing as how I was just laid off, I do have Wednesday thru Friday to prepare.

And I have some things this weekend to work on, codewise, along with server wise, that I need to get done.

So I’m very possibly going to be doing updates over the next week on preparations and so on.  At this time, I figure I’ll be going with the same setup I used last time – git/lua/löve/sublimetext/swankypaint/sfxr .

Oh, and pomodoro for keeping track of time.

Sorry to hear about the layoff :/ Never a good thing.

Third Time – I’m In

Hello!

I will probably be participating for a third time, which makes it a whole year of Ludum Dare for me! First year I made Dimensions Reality, my best game in Ludum Dare, and second year, I made Advanced Pong, which I enjoyed, but it was much too easy to make. I hope this year is a little more of a challenge! Here’s what I’ll be using:

  • Language: Java
  • IDE: Eclipse
  • Art: GIMP
  • Audio: FL Studio, Audacity, Acoustic Guitar (maybe)
  • Game Engine: Yamanu 2 (needs to be publicly updated before compo starts)
  • Operating System: Windows

This is actually the first Ludum Dare where I’ve used Windows. Sadly I had some very important software that was incompatible with Wine on Linux. On a more positive note, I should be able to play most games entered now!

Good luck all!

P.S. Thank you, Quill, for interacting with my streaming post last time, that was really cool, and I had a fanboy moment for a few minutes 😛 😀

Affirming my in-ness.

Language: Haxe
Engine: HaxeFlixel
Art: PyxelEdit, Photoshop CC
Audio: Reaper
IDE: Flashdevelop
Notebook: Black n’ Red (A5)
Respiration: Aerobic
Distractions: 1x Cat

And, assuming I have time to get something in here . . .
Base Code: https://github.com/JoeCreates/LudumBase

Iniam. Getting exiiiiiiited :)

Is it that time of the year again, when i will aim high, miss by a great margin but somehow always manage to learn something and enjoy the experience.

Well then, i am in (bar any unforseen and awkward ‘social interference’), during my first LD’s i tried out different libraries and tools, but this time i will probably go back to Phaser.io as i did a prototype with it and this yo generator really makes it easy to do that.

IDE is as usual my favourite (yes, it is so good that i even paid for it instead of going for any of the free alternatives) PHPstorm, no other IDE comes even close to its features and you can find plugin for everything ( i really DO like it a lot ;p ).

Hopefully this time i will manage to make a ‘real game’ and by that i mean a game that has a beginning and an ending, that is fun, can be won and restarted, has sound (woooohoohoooo, things to hear…) and challenging victory conditions aka motivation.

Lets see if this time i am able to squeeze all that into two short days.

Oh and did i mention that as always i want it to be a witty interpretation of the theme?!

So what could possibly go wrong, it just has to be amazing! 😉

On that note,

goeth forth and codeth / designeth / haveth funeth

#LD32, Let’s Do This!

Hello everyone,

Looks like it’s time to tackle the old Ludum Dare beast once again.  I couldn’t participate last time, but I’ve made sure to set aside the weekend this time and I’m really looking forward the 48-hour rush!

My hope for a theme this time is something that would suit a tycoon-type game or a simple turn-based RPG.  I really want to push myself to make one or the other within the constraints of the compo!

  • Html 5 Canvas / Javascript, of course using the amazing Phaser framework!
  • The trusted Gimp for art.  I haven’t found anything more reliable, and I’ve been learning more about how to use it properly lately!
  • Spriter for animation, if required.  I really enjoyed using it during LD30 and I love how it makes it easy to create fluid animations with simple motion tweens.  The only problem with it is it doesn’t help at all for pixel-art animations.
  • Again, I really want to try to make some custom music.  This time I’ll be looking into LMMS, but if that doesn’t work out I’ll use the incredibly free Abundant-Music for random music generation.
  • The equally incredibly free BFXR for random game sound generation, if required!
  • Sublime Text 3 for code editing.  Perfect lightweight code editor.
  • GitHub for source control management.
  • My own website to host the finished product.
  • Chronolapse for time lapse capture. It’s always awesome to look back at that time lapse and see just where my time went through the weekend.

Best of luck to everyone participating in this exciting new Ludum Dare, and I look forward to playing all of your games after it’s complete!

Hey thanks for the links to everything you’re using! Chronolapse looks particularly interesting.

Is it really that time again?

So, I’ve completely forgotten to write my entry post I just realized. Hopefully this’ll go better than the MiniLD I tried earlier, so I can get a proper game out and have some fun.

I’m going to stick to writing the game in C++ for this entry too, though I’m very much wanting to do this game with the OpenSceneGraph library instead of SFML like I usually do. I just need to get myself a crash course in doing scene graphs in games, which I’m hoping I’ll have time for during the warmup.
If I can’t get my head around it then I’m going to fall back to SFML as a safe card though.

So my tools will most likely be;

  • CMake
  • Visual Studio 2103 / Vim + Makefiles + Clang + GCC
  • Gimp
  • Blender
  • Audacity
  • cgMusic

  • C++11
  • Angelscript
  • OSG / SFML

If anyone has knowlege about doing scene graphs I’d love to hear some comments on this plan, apart from that though I wish you all a nice Compo and a nice Jam.

I am in!

Hello!

This will be my first Ludum Dare! I will join the Stockholm meetup and hope to have a fun time!

I plan to develop my first game using Dart of which I unfortunately have limited experience. As a first timer I anticipate that I will have to cut down on most features and work with bare essentials.

However, nobody remembers a coward! :)

The game is afoot!

Interested to see how Dart works out for you!

I’m in !

I’ll be there for the LD#32 !

I’ll dev in JS with Phaser.

To nigth I will be in livestream in order to do some testing.

I’m in! (I hope!)

If I can, I’m going to be spending the whole weekend on this compo. (You know, because I didn’t last time… </sarcasm>)

Unfortunately, I might not be able to, because school just started up this past week, so if I get drenched in HW and such, I might not be able to get into it.

But you know what? Screw that. I WILL make SOMETHING. It might not have as much care put into it as I might want it to have, but SOMETHING will be done by the 19th.

Onwards, to another Dare!

LD32 will by my second

Hey guys

So this time is going to be my second LD and here are some of the tools I will be useing

Unity
Photoshop
FilterForge
Blender
Audacity

Lets have some fun :)
