LD32 April 17–20, 2015

In!

This will be my fifth LD! I’m just using a new account. 😉

It has to go well this time right? I mean, 32 is a power of two after all, that means something.

I haven’t written a game in way too long (due to college stuff), so this could go horribly, but hopefully I’ll pull something out of the brilliant theme that we’ll obviously get. I’ll probably use Java as it’s relatively fast to work with scratch that, Chrome 42 stopped supporting Java apparently, might have to use something else. Then for graphics I’ll use Photoshop or something like that.

Good luck to everyone entering!

Ready to try this challenge!

I was a bit disappeared after my successive jam fails. But I’m back!

I think I learned something after 3 fails: “Let the theme guide the game, not destroy them”.

What it means? I usually used the theme to make a “gorgeous idea” and latter try to make it. But after, having nothing, the jam finished in frustration.
This jam I will make “something” from the beginning no matter what, and use the theme as the oracle of design decisions.

I hope, with this way I’ll be able to finish a jam game again 😀

Happy Ludum Dare to all!

Were in and with a bigger team this time!

Usually… well always, Ludum Dare takes a turn for the worst and ends up slapping us in the face. This is not because its to hard its because personal, family, pet or schedule reasons, but we try to have as much fun as possible, for the time being. This is going to be our third go at a Ludum Dare and with two more people now, a programmer and another graphics guy!  We will only be participating for 42 hours and not 72 because of a Monday that happens to be a school day. But anyway were in and that’s all that matters, hopefully its not a stupid theme this time.

Programs we will use:

3D modeling: Blender

2D Art: Gimp, Photoshop and horrible horrible MS Paint

Game Engine: Unity

Programming Language: C#

The best part in Ludum Dare

Do you know what’s the best part in Ludum Dare? Game development? Well, yes, but do you know what’s the second best part in Ludum Dare? Umm, no.

Have you ever realized that Ludum Dare is actually a social event. Even if you worked alone, you still share your content and progress with other people. You love (or give hearts) other people’s posts, and they’ll love your post. But that’s not the best part in the second best part in Ludum Dare: in Ludum Dare, you “meet” developers you have met in other game development communities. Currently I have seen many people who I originally “met” in sites like Game Jolt, GBJam forums and even 64Digits (very unlikely, though, those guys never leave their site)!

And that’s a good reason to love Ludum Dare.

I’m In ! For the last time maybe…

Winter Ludum Dare is coming ! And I will participate to this one (in fact, I was waiting for him since a long time).

But (there’s always a but), this is probably my last Ludum Dare, because of my studies.

So, I want this edition to be fantastic and for that I will – if I have the connection for – make my game in Live !

If you want to watch me coding and doing some bad art you just have to follow this link : I’m a link ! (where is Zelda ?).

This stream will be in French/English, depending of the number of viewers, even if I will not talk really often, but we will have music !

That’s all, have a nice day and a nice Ludum Dare !

For the “technical part” I will use : Libgdx, Photoshop, sfxr, and – other software to add, maybe -…

What kind of studies will not allow you to have one weekend off every few month?

Jan Peter, I was thinking the same thing.

It’s something that only exist on France (I think) it’s called “Prepa”. During 2 or 3 years, after high school you’re prepared (that’s why it’s called prepa) to integrate engineering schools.

The amount of work you have to produce depend of the capacity of the students, and for now I really don’t know if I will adapt myself or not. That’s why this Ludum Dare can be my last one (except if the date of the next one is during holidays or something like that).

There can always be projects, that don’t allow you to use your weekend for ludum dare.. that can happen in school, in college or when you are working.

Thank you ! :)

prepared the folder…

Looking forward to next weekend!

Just prepared the project directory for ld32..

Downloaded the latest version of phaser.io (which is the web game lib of my choice)

Setup the base npm/grunt build script..

.. checked that all my tools are ready (inkscape, spriter, webstorm)

Looking really forward to it – first ludum dare that I am going to use inkscape and spriter. (Started learning both since the beginning of 2015)

See you at the compo :)

1’m 1n

I’m in. Not much to say about it.

I will be in a car during the whole Saturday, let’s see if I manage to accomplish something.

See you next week end!

First timer

Very excited for next weekend – it’s my first game jam, and my mind is overflowing with ideas – especially now the theme voting has started (I’ve voted – though I’m happy with any of the themes). I’ve been developing a 3D game in my spare time for about 2 years (I know, I know!); not far off being able to release a demo, but excited to give myself a tight deadline in order to actually get something out the door.

I’m doing the 72hr jam with my good friend Lew (he’s bringing his PC over for the weekend, and we’re taking the Monday off work), but we’ll be creating all our own assets. I’m a programmer and musician, he’s mainly an artist and web dev, but also does a bit of music and indie dev in his spare time (he recently participated in Speccy Jam and placed a Top 3 pick with his game Moon Unit Z: http://www.speccyjam.com/speccyjam2winners/).

I’ve set up a git repo and started looking at game mechanics for the type of game we’re going to be doing. We’re in the UK, so the theme announcement is at 2AM on the Saturday morning. We’re pretty old, so we might be in bed by then… so I’m not sure when we’ll actually start on the game, hah!

We’re also going to try streaming game development on our show / podcast channel, and may even take donations for Child’s Play Charity during the jam. Not intending to spam, but if you’re interested in watching, sub to www.twitch.tv/resonancearcade, www.hitbox.tv/resonancearcade, or check out our website www.resonancearcade.com.

For those interested, we’re looking at doing a 2D game in Unity 3D. Professionally I program in C#, so Unity is my engine of choice. We’ll probably be using Photoshop for graphics, and we’ll be doing the music with a combination of live samples (I used to run a recording studio, so I have lots of gear ready to use) and MIDI / MOD samples and loops. I use Cubase and Audition – not sure what Lew uses for his chip tunes, but we’ll work something out!

Good luck to everyone! I’m really busy with Real Life at the moment, but I’m going to try and get involved on the LD website a bit more than just as a casual observer this week!

I’m in!

I’m in, for the second time! My first time was quite a while ago and was a little appalling. I’ll be using:

Language: Java.
Engine: mini2Dx (libgdx)
Graphics: Adobe Illustrator or paint.NET.
Sound: SFXR
Music: FL Studio (If I get round to it…)
Drink: A whole heap of milk.

Now to pretend I’ve coded in Java in the last year….

Warmup to Ludum Dare 32

Hi there!

Had this account for a while but the coming Ludum Dare contest is at the ideal time for me in terms of Schedule. Right in the middle of the University Easter Break means that I won’t be too busy with work to participate and there will be few distractions :)

My coding experience has been all over the place; C, Dark Basic, HTML, Java, Javascript, Lua, Mathematica, PHP, Python, even a little bit of Prolog!

I’ve produced my best projects, which could be charitably seen as games, in Javascript with a HTML5 canvas display, mostly in 2D but I have messed around with using WebGL for 3D renders. Javascript is a great choice for a project to share with others, which is the goal of this contest :) Recent academic programming has been in Java so I’ll have some nice object orientated principles to use in Javascript.

For editor I think I’ll give Netbeans a shot, it works well for Java and supports other languages. Otherwise I’ll be using Notepad++ for text and Paint.Net for images.

Excited to see what Themes will be voted on, always end up with lots of inspiration through that 😀

What kind of game shall I make?

Looking through the heaps of projects on my computer and the few that I have uploaded online at http://tangentialtopics.blogspot.co.uk/ a few themes emerge.

I enjoy coming up with neat algorithms to generate game worlds, be they world maps, dungeons or galaxies. Procedural content generation is very rewarding to explore as the designer!

Most of my favourite games are real time strategy or city builders, where you control whole groups of characters or give high level commands. Most of my projects fit into this ‘management’ genre where you don’t have a single character and the controls involve clicking and dragging.

Along with procedural content generation algorithms I also have a weakness for Cellular Automata or other simulation-like game rules. By only having a few actions each agent can take you end up with simple code that results in fascinating emergent phenomena. This ties into having quite active agents in the world with some rudimentary AI.

Having randomly generated game worlds with agents moving around without a distinct player character means the game projects I produce are more like ‘toys’ that you can just sit and watch. I’m not sure if that is a good thing or not 😛 Certainly I enjoy the process of creating and then setting in motion a little simulation. At the very least you can expect me to produce something that is nice to watch, assuming my minimalist programmer art isn’t too bad.

I’ve been hoping to include some kind of generative content in my last few entries.. Never quite got round to it though – hopefully this time! Good luck!!

Round 1

First round already has some interesting ideas in it, most appealing to me would be:

  • Four Elements
  • Genetics
  • Hidden World
  • In The Clouds
  • Into The Wild
  • Stranded
  • The Island

They sound like excellent starting off points for a cute little simulation :3

Even if these ideas don’t do too well I’ll remember them to combine with other ideas and the winning theme.

I quite like the idea of Genetics but there was a similar theme a while back – Evolution.

Question about rules!

Hi!

I participated in a couple of LDs but since last LD and now I coded a builder tool for unity. A tool where I can select the platforms I’d like to build for and build them directly after each other, so I do not have to go through the build process for every platform.

My first question: Am I allowed to use such a tool for the 48 hour compo? (releasing the code is not a problem)

During next week I have some free time available. I’m planing to do a Audio/SoundFX Manager (no sound effects). A tool where I just can play every audio clip that i want.

So my second question: Is such a tool allowed for the 48 hour compo? (releasing the code is not a problem)

My point of view:

I think both are allowed, because they are tools and don’t change and or create new content.

And btw I’m in! 😉

I’m pretty sure that’s allowed. Please release the source and binaries though. Your tools sound interesting so I’d love to take a look!

LD31 Postmortem, no LD32

Hey guys,

we most likely won’t be able to participate in Ludum Dare this time :( BUT we have been working on our last LD31 Jam entry Of Carrots And Blood and we just released it on itch.io for free for Windows and Mac. We have added powerups, different enemy types, a global highscore for the single player and we have also added a local Co-op mode (which is the most fun) with a big surprise in the end! So please check it out :)

Download OF CARROTS AND BLOOD on itch.io here!

And for those of you who already know the Jam version, it would be really cool, if you could compare the two versions and tell us here in the comments, if we applied your feedback for the better or worse 😉 More feedback much appreciated!

\o/ Godot Engine basic-y base code

I’ve decided that unless I work with Eniko for this LD, I’m using Godot. As part of warmup/learning the engine, I’ve created some very basic stock stuff to start my game off with. As per rulez for the compo, I am making it available for everyone to use if they want.

Grab it here! (zip)

It has a splash screen on which the logo fades in and then out while a sound plays and a handy function for changing scenes that gets called at the end of the fade animation to bring up the start scene. The start scene is so small you can’t see it, but this also includes [what should be] working progress bar code for scene loading.

I might update this again before the jam starts, but in the meantime… \o/ Viva Ludum Dare!

CORE Game Engine (Java)

Between last ld and this one i started making my own engine as an alternative to slick2d. I will be using this engine for this ludum dare. If anyone else want to use it it can be found here. I will update this but the “final” version should be out before the competition starts. I will also be uploading a tutorial on my youtube channel (youtube.com/user/thepattybeast) soon.

I’m OU- I mean IN.

Well, can’t pass up my second Ludum Dare…
Unfortunately I didn’t learn as much C++ as I’d like, so it looks like I’ll be going in Java again.
With standard Java libraries.

I see some really good themes, though. I’ve already got ideas pouring out of my head. Gonna be a good one.

Warmup game: Getting Warmer

I need to go to bed now T^T but I got a proper start screen up with chirpy bird sounds and a button that plays a sound file to make sure I connected the button to Doing A Thing correctly.

Getting Warmer

If you want to try what I have so far (dunno why you would, but hey, mouth sound?), there’s a Windows build you can download.
