About 3 Hours To GO

Well, My first Ludum Dare is about to wrap up! IN 3 HOURS!!!! I’m pretty suprised that I actually got 48 votes. For some it may seem small, but pretty much all the votes were positive. Plus this is my first time :3

Looking for something to rate with only 3 hours left? Take a Look!

I had an absolute BLAST with this. Will compete again.

Hey dude, the same with me, first timer and also got around those votes and almost everything was positive. Had a great ride in LudumDare. What a great community <3.

Mørke – Playt-hrough and a few thoughts

So Mørke is my first attempt ever at making a game for Ludum Dare.

It has its obvious flaws but generally I’m pleased with the result.

I’d like to say thanks to all who commented/voted on the game. I have a few thoughts based on those comments plus I made a video play-through of the game:

  • As usual I’ve been too ambitious with my project. I wanted to present a complicated story through small clues given by the NPCs in the game. I ran out of time and the story telling is nowhere near where I had first imagined it to be. As a result no one who plays the game has a chance to figure out what’s going on. As evident by the comments this also confuses some players at the end, where they are not sure if the game ended properly or not. To those people I can say: “Yeah, don’t worry. You didn’t miss anything. I’m just being a pretentious jack-ass.
  • I didn’t spend enough time on the mechanics. Mørke is just a basic platformer, but I spent so much time trying to create art for the game (not my strong side) so I basically didn’t have time to play around and polish the platformer controls. Next time I should try and dedicate some more time to making the basic controls ‘feel’ right.
  • Learn my tools better. I spent too much time figuring out how to do stuff in Unity I really should have already known before I started. I also had to google to find out how I could export images with transparency with the art program I was using. I wasted time on learning tools that I could have spent on making the game. I have tendency to treat game jams as an opportunity to learn new tools/technologies. That’s ok, but don’t try to use too many new things. For instance I had never tried out the new GUI system in Unity, but I decided to give it a go for this game. There’s a bit of UI stuff in the game but there is a reason why this game is lacking a menu screen.
  • Some day I might learn to scope my games realistically.

For fun, and so that you don’t need to play my game, I have also recorded a video of me playing the game. It includes all the endings so that the people who thought they might have missed something can finally sleep again with peace of mind.

regards,
Peter

Rage the Stage – postmortem

Rage the Stage was our 3 game and the first as a team of 3 people.
We accepted the challenge “why not try something new“.
So no Java and no Libgdx. A bigger challenge for sammakko as for me.
For our 3th game we used Godot Engine. I’ve had some training  with the MiniLD #58 – MuMoPo.

Preparation
Our only preparation was thinking during the theme voting about what game we can make with the themes.
Unfortunately, for An Unconventional Weapon we haven’t any cool idea!

Jam session
dark3zz
(soundcloud.com/dark3zz) has joined us for the first time with his amazing equipment.
For us, he was big source of inspiration and pushed us forwards.

What worked out well
– teamwork (first time working in threes)
– no major problem with Godot

What didn’t worked out well
 – only on the last day we had a working game to play and improve the gameplay.

Need improvement
– no more music game and no more e-guitar :)

Many thank’s to
sammakko – the main programmer
dark3zz – master of music

and YOU – for helping to improve the gameplay  and voting

Peace & Compassion

I didn’t want to go with another “kill ’em all in a funny way’ so i decided to make the game the zen way:

After coming up the stairs from the cellar you find your building occupied by brutal aggressors. But instead of waking your inner Chuck Norris you decide to heed the Dalai Lama’s advice and pacify them with a smile.
I mean literally.

Due to some family business i had to attend to i didn’t have enough time to spend on this idea, so i went for the jam, but that only bought me a few hours more as it was monday and stuff had to be done. The game still was not even close to what i thought it could look like.

So now i finally got around to add some asal to the post-compo version of ‘Compassionate action’ that i wanted to have in the first place (e.g. filters, the inapt designers secret gfx sauce).

Befor i couldn’t really implement the visual style that i had in mind, also the viewport of the game was too wide, you could see way too much to be interesting, but with the added honey this works way better, it is almost enjoyable. It comes a lot closer to what i envisioned.

It is still not exactly what i had in mind gfx wise, but when does that ever happen. It would be nice to have had more background gfx still, but thats something for later maybe.

See the before:

and after:

ld32-after

All in all i am very content, i learned a lot, again, and that is what it is really about, to learn how to do what you love, and then one day, maybe, make a real game that is addictive and fun to play :)

So check out the JAM entry version and vote on it, or see the POST-JAM version to get a feeling for what i was going for.

Thank you for your support

Thank for your support and votes – my dear friends. I have received more votes than in the previous LD sessions. I wish you the best and see you later for the next LudumDare ++

Rate In for a pound!

With only a few hours left, there’s still time to play and rate In for a pound!

LD32-screenshot-4

It’s worth it just for the intro!

LD32-screenshot-5

Downbeat, still time left

Still time left to try out “Downbeat“, my compo entry:

downbeatss_02

Music as a weapon!  Also, 48 hours isn’t a lot of time to get much gameplay done, so do you think a longer, more complete experience would be fun for me to make?  Maybe something with bonuses for a string of perfect combos and such, and of course more music variety.

2 hours left, and i’m now re-using the same .gif over and over

Just need 8 more votes to reach 100, this would be a great achievement for my first Ludum Dare!

(This is probably the lest effort I have put into a self advertising post…)

But either way, click here to rate my game!

Correction…doesn’t have many ratings as yours* 😛

Thank You Berry Much! :3

berrymuch

So, as we get closer to the end of LD#32, I’d like to thank everyone who played, rated and/or commented on my rushed and crappy entry, Berry The Last Straw. I’d also like to thank everyone who just peeked upon the page ;), everyone on the IRC channel and everyone who answered my noob questions here on LD! :3

This first LD has been a great experience so far and I’m surely going to come back for more jams, compos and the mini-LD. I plan on making my entry into a full game (after the puzzle I’m currently working on) and I also want to see your entries, should they turn into a full game! :)

I’ll put my crappy timelapse online soon (didn’t have much time because of work), a “full version” of the ost and will try to keep playing the most entries possible, even when the jam ends. I couldn’t play all the entries I wanted (and I bookmarked a LOT of entries), but all the games I’ve played I tried my best to enjoy as much as possible!

And, again, Thanks! Wish you all the best (for your games too)! :) See y’all on the next LD (or whatever game jam we might bump into)!

Cheers!

Thanks for playing and rating COPY GUN!
